The bekan horn sounds amazing! I can just picture that echoing through the hills and across the fields of battle. It must've been terrifying to any foe who heard it.
The widespread use of the word "Celtic" in its application to things Irish is actually rooted mainly in the nineteenth century, in what became known as the Celtic Renaissance
They're neat, but I just have the humorous image in my head of prehistoric celtic musicians time traveling somehow, and after a bit and becoming used to youtube and everything coming upon this video just 'this guy is complete rubbish...'
interesting.. these instruments are very rare today.. in the west african sahel there are ancient long bronze/iron trumpets/horns still used by the hausa, fula and kanuri people called "kakaki" for ceremonial music, not to mention the ancient horns in the himalayas... these groups also primarily use the pentatonic scale, and have defining ensembles of flutes and fiddles.. by that similarity, it seems the roots of irish music are very old indeed.
to the man who plays these horns, have you tried blowing from the corner of your mouth sideways into the mouthpiece? If you get just the right pressure from your diaphragm, you hit the note then its octave then the note again they viberate as they alternate, its awesome like a rasping growl
I love the way it separates from its time and modern time . Honestly I would rather go for prehistoric Ireland music rather than all the music based around sex, money, power, and drugs. Great!! I love this!!! Can someome please tell me where I can found music of this kind??? And specially I wish I would listen some of those mysterious bone flutes at the end... Greetings from México!!!
Dunno. The didgeridoo was used for ceremonial purposes, rather than as an opening for inter-tribal warfare. The Scots used the pipes both as a rallying call at the start of a battle but also as a purely musical instrument in a wide variety of contexts. I think there is a fair chance that the instruments were used ceremonially - but the players would have needed to practice.
I have always been interested in ancient music since as a kid I saw some huge bronze tubas at a museum. We had very similar intruments here in Sweden.
