As a very recent first-timer, looking down on the stained-glass murals of the princesses with this music playing was one of the most entrancing and mystifying moments I've ever experienced. Not even five minutes in and you get a sense of just how important these characters are to the story, not just mere damsels in distress, but pure of heart, and the bastions of light in the worlds.
The entire series has never broken 8/10 at best but KH1's intro was absolute fucking genius. They let you know right away it's not merely "JRPG WITH DISNEY CHNARACTERS", that it's not going to be some silly romp with cartoon characters. I mean, at the end of the day sure, that's kinda what it is, but what's admirable is their insistence on playing it straight-faced. It was cool for something like this to have a story meant to be taken 100% seriously. It's the same shit(ideologically) that Sega had going on with Sonic Adventure 1's intro cutscene, which is arguably the sole reason that series is still around today. Sincerity should always be appreciated
@@vegasvanga5442 I agree completely. I mean, for example, this game had you battle against Chernabog. Sure it was an easy fight once you got the hang of it, but what makes the fight so memorable is Chernabog himself. One of the most notorious and fearsome of all of Disney's creations, the creature responsible for all the evil in the Disney Animated Universe, powerful enough to summon spirits of the dead among all other manner of dark creatures and bend them to his will, and more likely than not the guy who gave us nightmares as kids. And here you were facing him in a fight to the death. Now I was lucky enough to have not owned Fantasia on tape in my youth, but I knew exactly who Chernabog was, and I was quite intent on taking the fight to him. Special mention goes to the soundtrack for the battle; I am so glad Square Enix used Night on Bald Mountain as the theme for the Chernabog fight. I also consider the following section equally as intimidating. The descent into Bald Mountain was designed in such a way that you knew you had to keep going, despite your every instinct urging you to flee.
@Richard Phillipot The use of Night on Bald Mountain wasn't in the original, it was an International change. (Yeah, there are FOUR versions of KH1 - the original, International, Final Mix, and HD)
One of the things I found interesting about this game is how quickly it got dark. You go from happy colorful world to world, and then immediately after ansem tells maleficent to surrender to the darkness and become darkness itself. At that point I went “this is a children’s game?!?“
The only thing I really found very dark about this game wastbe concept of The End of the World, and how you're essentially going through the remnants of the worlds decimated by the heartless. Ironically, all the "supreme darkness" talk that the villains throw around really wasn't too dark in the end
I'd argue that Ansem possessing Riku was the darkest moment in this game. I at least always find possessions creepy, completely vanquishing the will of another person to force your own using their body. Not to mention the fact that Ansem, with the power of darkness, MOLDS RIKUS BODY TO RESEMBLE HIS OLD HUMAN FORM.
@@Lippalate Fuck. That always made me feel so disgusting and uncomfortable. Hearing Riku’s voice in a body that C L EA R LY wasn’t theirs was just so, so unnerving. You could hear the shame and embarrassment in their voice.
Ugh. I hate when people say “wtf this is sooo dark, this is a kid’s game!!!” Kids can handle this kinda stuff and even like it. Not everything has to have a happy ending and all be rainbows and unicorns. Don’t assume because something is a children’s game, it won’t have serious moments.
Goofy: Gwarsh, is that all that's left of the worlds taken by the Heartless? Sora: Those worlds will be restored if we beat Anserm, right? Donald: You betcha Sora: But, if we do beat him and all these worlds become restored and disconnected, what's gonna happen too this place? And to us? Donald: Well, uh... Goofy: This is a Heartless world, so maybe it'll just disappear. But no worries. Even if this place goes poof, our hearts ain't goin' nowhere. I'm sure we'll find our pals again. Yep, I just know we will. Sora: Yeah, your right. _holds up Kairi's Good Luck charm_ I'll return this. I promise.
