Thank you, Stephen! Heather did great on the hawk shots. I was pretty disappointed that I didn't get a single shot of it that I liked. But, Heather had my back!
Good job, guys. I appreciate how one of you had the 1.4x on, and the other off. It helps (me at least) see how the well the TC does. It seems to focus best in good light (expected) but it very sharp (which matches my experience with the same gear).
Nice video and pictures from both of you. Have you tried the 800mm f11 on the R7? I haven’t yet been able to spring for the 100-500mm and wondered how the 800 does on the R7? curious if you have made any prints. Thanks and keep videos coming.
Thank you! I have used my 800 f/11 on the R7 and it works well in good light. Usually the 100-500 is enough focal length and it's sharper than the 800 but the 800 is good and a better choice that the 100-500 is some situations.
Love the hawks in flight shots! You made some amazing photos as usual. That 100-500 seems like a great lens but I own the RF 100-400 and the EF 150-600 Sigma so it's very tough to justify me getting it but I would sure love to have it. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.
I love the bird shots in the sunflowers. I am on the verge in getting an R7 to add to my 100-500, but just cant seem to pull the trigger. When my 7D2 died, I swore I would get a replacement, just not sure the R7 is my answer? Since the R7 is the first mirrorless crop, thinking to be safe and waiting for a R72 with improvements.
Thank you and thanks for watching! I would say that it will be a long wait for an R7ii. The R7 has only been out for a month or so. You could buy an R7 and get 2 1/2 or three years use out of it and then maybe they will drop a mark two.
@@PhilThach I am enjoying my R6 for now. I only wish it had the reach of the R7. I still have several dslr bodies as well for my picture taking, so hoping they upgrade the R7 much sooner. After all, they already have a R5C. Plus waiting to get an R7 stresses me out with Canons order systems constant delays and worse yet, their choice of delivery. Fed Ex is a nightmare every time. Take care
Thanks for another awesome video like always Phil, there is a lot of Warbler activity here in Montreal, I'm sure you will have a lot of bird sightings in the next few weeks, many birds started migration already 🐦❤️
Nice! could Heather take some photos with and without extender to clear out the issue if the better quality of her shots is due to photographer/her processing or the extender itself?
Thank you! Probably not, Heather never uses the extender. It’s a simple matter of I did not bag focus as sharply as she did on that particular bird, I’m sure you’re talking about the photographs of the cat bird. I think the low light combined with the smaller aperture required with the Tele converter was the reason for the focus miss.
hi nice photos - Have you owned also the EF 100-400 L is ii? not so happy about the quality with teleconverter 1,4x iii plus R7, but maybe it is due to hot season and refraction problem with subject over 30 meteres
I don't own that lens. My friend Percy has it and that teleconverter but I don't think he's used it much with his R7 so far. I'd hold judgement on the combo until you find some better conditions to shoot in. Thanks for watching!
Great video and pictures. Do you have any complaints about using the R7 for wildlife compared to other cameras you've used? Is the R7 your "go to" camera for wildlife?
Thank you very much! The R7 is definitely my go to camera for birds and wildlife. If the wildlife is extremely large like say an elk and in low light I would probably use the R6 because it is better at higher ISOs. I said on larger animals because the R6 has way less reach. I do think that the auto focus system on the R6 is a little bit more consistent in low light than the R7. The unparalleled reach of the R7 Makes it the more valuable birding camera even with its low light shortcomings.
I got my R7 for two weeks. I also have a R5. In my two week experience with the R7, although its AF is inherited from R3, I think its tracking accuracy might not be as consistent as the R5. If I take 20 shots, around 10 shots or so are not tack sharp and on the soft side. With the R5, soft shots would be around 2 or 3 out of the 20. What is your experience with the R7? That said, the R7 is still a great camera with great reach at such affordable price.
@@PhilThach ok. Thanks. I am not biased at the end of the day. Canon tells us its AF is from R3, but they don’t tell us the hit rate is not as high as the more expensive models. I guess it might have to do with the processor or other electronic components that are lower quality. I bet its computational speed is lower that the AF accuracy suffers. At $1500, I am good with the R7. I bought it for the 1.6 crop factor. I am keeping the R7. The bird shots at the sunflower field are good.
What a fun outing. Lovely images, especially at the sunflower field. Wondering how Heather likes the canon compared to her Nikon Z50… for bird photography?
Thank you, Jeff! It's a great lens for sure. I think it may be a little overpriced but there is really nothing better to use on the R7 in handheld situations.
TC1.4x photos seems lesss sharp even when you shoot at lower ISO in full light 1:45 vs 2:00. Songsparrows on sunflowers is the same. Much sharper without the TC. Definately not due to lack of light. It is not misfocused. It is just softer.
@@PhilThach Thanks for the quick reply. I pick mine up tomorrow. Been using a 7d mkii. Didn't know if you were in AP or TV. I'll have to check out modes on r7 when i get it.
@@PhilThach I agree, it looks like both continents benefit from the same bird, with their differences and beauty. The problem with ours is they don’t sit still for very long, so not easy to photograph. You have some lovely photos there :-)
Phil and Heather great shots. Thanks.
Thank you, John!
Those golf finches on the sunflowers were superb! Great job from you both!
We were happy to see the goldfinches, they are much more drab looking when not in breeding plumage. Thanks, Peter!
Beautiful shots, thank you for sharing.
Thank you, Lawrence!
Great shots Phil and Heather. Yellow birds amongst the sunflowers looked really cool. Thanks for sharing the video 🙏
Thank you, Adrian!
Great photos! I really liked the hawk and the birds with sunflower in the background.

I have an r7 with 100-500rf after seeing your beautiful photos on the sunflower field I am seriously thinking getting the 1.4tc now
Thank you! I rarely use the TC on the R7 but when I do it really gives me some crazy range.
Ha ha I love how you called yourself out for just posing on the keep 😂. Looking forward to the next video
Thank you! :)
Good job, guys!

500mm at f/7.1 is a turn off for such an expensive lens.
It’s a compromise. The lens is extremely small and light. It is very sharp and accurate. But I’m with you, it’s overpriced.
