And let’s also not forget, any kind of “progress” is still progress. Of course you’re not going to become completely proficient in just one week, however intense it is, but any time spent with the language, and whatever you can achieve over that set period is always going to be better than nothing!!
And this is exactly why I love the language learning community! Everyone struggles with the pressure they put on themselves but there is this really constructive way of reminding each other that we all are human beings and should value every little step we take
#facts. I love how he said, he decided to study Russian for 1.5 years and then go to russia. I love how he did not think about what level he would have achieved by then. I personally believe that that is great cuz most of the time, we don't see progress cuz we haven't stuck onto something for long enough and if we did, we would progress. I personally always use this strategy when I am starting a new activity. I just tell myself to stick to it without evaluating myself for a particular amount of time, usually 6 months and then after that when I have developed a new habit, I start tryna improve and evaluate it.
Love seeing you speak in Spanish. I'm still just a beginner in the language - but it inspires me to start to practice my speaking a bit more. I've made excuses before for why I can't book an italki class with Spanish but I think now is the time to push myself. Really great and encouraging video!
Wow, that Spanish in the beginning is really advanced! I had gotten the false impression that you had dabbled in Spanish, Lindie, but when I heard the intro I wouldn't have put it past you to do the full talk in Spanish, good work! I really like those conversational videos and I would like to thank you, Mark and Lindie, for putting such information online. After all, many people see the prodigy factor, but forget the feelings behind language learning. Your videos have even given me terms to talk about things I had been doing without being able to put a name on them (e.g. language stacking). A true inspiration and motivation!
😭😭This is exaclty the video I needed, I swear. I've been going to this mild existential crisis while learning Chinese, where I just feel huge amounts of dread looking at this mount everest of stuff I still absolutely have no clue about, and feeling like someone gave me an axe and told me "yeah. Your goal is to flaten this mountain" Also there's this intense amount of guilt I feel when looking at languages other than Chinese? I really have to work on that. Ugh.
@@kairishikari8720 right??? And you try "immersion" and for example I have an app, that sends me push messages about news in Chinese. And I... So whenever you see a new character without hearing it or you hear a new word without seeing the character... @@natskiliow9192 yeah, I feel like there is this disconnection between the spoken language and the script that makes it a ton harder. If you want to be able to read you constantly have to put in extra effort
Hey, as a half Chinese and half French, I think you have to ( for me) the best way to improve your Chinese is to take your time. For example, before, I can just speak but I can't write... Now every day I learn almost 15 vocabularies and ask myself why this character is written like this, the pronunciation...etc. The result is I can read in my language!. Same for English, I practice a lot: reading, writing, listening, speaking. I'm confident with myself when I speak to foreigners :))
I think this was one of the best collabs yet, i loved all of your insights about language learning pressure, when to start talking and getting out of the comfort zone. And it was very inspiring! Thanks for the video
I think I will wait to output (speaking) when I understand almost everything in japanese (listening is where I lack the most), bc when u understand the language, it will be easier to speak it, I did the same with English, I can speak a lot, sometimes I may mispronounced something but I work everyday on it, the same japanese.
Definitely. Every strategy helps. When I was learning German, Listening and writing were like 60% of my learning and reading was about 35%. Speaking was only 5% but today I give powerpoint presentations to my boss in German about mechanical engineering stuff. When learning Chinese, I speaking and reading were like 70% of my language learning from the start and today, I can also communicate very well with natives. Both techniques work
Learning a language is really a trial where you have to train yourself to be more mindful of your achievements and be okay with the hardships. I have so many ups and downs where sometimes I will feel great about what I've learned so far, and the very next day I will feel completely hopeless and feel like my head is a colander where I miss every piece of information (not to mention the words or grammar structures that I should have known until now and that I'm still forgeting about). I'm trying to fight this other inner self which wants me to believe that I'm a failure. Making the effort to learn something instead of just being on social medias scrolling mindlessly is already a huge thing on its own, and trying to make it through even when it feels really hard is even more respectable ! Thank you Lindie for always making such great content that helps us language learners reignite our love for it. And thank you Mark for making such important observations too ! :)
please they have been calling me and my shy ass out the whole conversation 😭😂 this is exactly what I needed to get myself out there and practice my Japanese, thank you!

Great conversation. I was nodding along at everything I could relate to. After finding Dreaming Spanish thanks to you Lindy, I really went down the comprehensible input rabbit hole. It makes so much sense. But on a practical level, I feel like I'm restricting myself for several hundred hours I like how speaking makes me feel but I don't want to develop bad habits such as translating (which I do a lot in French). I agree with going with what's natural up to a certain degree, but we humans are also our own worst enemies. I don't naturally gravitate to training my ears to the language. I find it a chore, yet I know from experience of not doing it early enough with French that it's KEY. How do you balance going with the flow with forcing yourself to do stuff that isn't naturally attractive?
personally, i balanced those first few months with also doing some more dopamine inducing things on the side. Listening to me was a chore because i couldn't understand, and specially so watching shows i liked, because if i liked the premise i wanted to understand it!! but i just kept up the habit of making listening a big part of my lenguage learning, and reminding myself i don't have to understand. On the side i did some pod101 lessons which helped with the dopamine, because even if i wouldn't internalize the points immediately, it felt like i did something and i could understand something. Maybe also playing a lenguage learning game (basically) app like duolingo and such would help give you a bit of a reward after the grind of listening xDD Reading helped me also, i kept it at a much lower rate to listening but reading was the only way i learnt new vocabulary and the more i did it the more i started to understand the grammar as well which felt great. After a while without noticing i could understand the bare bones of what people said when listening, and it wasn't as exhausting. It's been like 7 months now and i can understand so much more in my target lenguage when listening! is not even exhausting anymore. I spend most of my time and consume most of my content in my target lenguage, and even if i don't understand everythign it feels natural for me now. It gets easier, just gotta grind a bit at first :D so yeah tl;dr try to build the habit at first even if you dread it and do something more rewarding and comprehensible and less exhausting for your brain on the side until you can do it without getting tired xDDD is my advice. Also, i believe that if you speak or write a bit early on because is what helps give you motivation, i think you should totally do it. Ideally much much less than you would get input only, but in any case the few bad habits you might get are completely worth it if it means otherwise you drop the lenguage imo!! a not completely effective method is better than no method at all! Sorry for the wall of text :P
Thanks a lot for tips in language learning. As I native speaker, I always find it very surprising when someone decides to learn Russian. I love my language, truly, but don't know why I have this feeling that Russian isn't among the most popular languages to learn. About mistakes... every one makes them. Even in a native language. That's pretty normal. Question is - if other people understand you. I am happy that my husband speaks my native language as I speak his. We do make a lot of mistakee and so what? There are no problems with understanding each other - that's the main idea. By the way, enjoyed beginning of the video in Spanish, which my target language for now. Good luck!
Maybe it's because Russia is one of the only countries where Russian is spoken... So you really have to like Russia or else you're not gonna want to study it probably. Also it's in another alphabet so it's hard. But that makes it of course not unsatisfying to study it (idk I don't study it honestly)
Adelante Irina, no te rindas.
Another challenge: learning a language when you have kids; figuring out how to incorporate your kids into it and still get something out of it yourself is tough, but can be done...I think...sometimes...if they're not tired or hungry...
How nice that you speak Hungarian. You know, Mark's maternal great-grandparents came here from Hungary in the very early 1900s. My mother spoke Hungarian with her mother, yet we were not taught .( I am the youngest of 10 girls and one boy ) They would say....You're American. I know a few phrases. I studied Spanish and became a certified teacher. Also I have studied a little French, Italian and Poruguese. I think that Hungarian would be a nice language for my son to learn as well. Why are you studying Hungarian may I ask? I am so proud of my son. His father was a lover of foreign languages as well...xoxo. nice interview
I would play games like pubg or fortnite in that language I'm focusing on to keep me on track, keep that language fresh and running through something I really like to do.

Thank you so much for the kind message! I am glad you enjoyed the video. For French I highly recommend Speakly! You can see a review video I made on my channel or check out the French resources page on my website lindiebotes.com/french-resources/
About the app strikes i dont like seeing how many days i worked without a break, i prefer to look back after a month or a year "oh i did 25/30day" or "350/365day", this is a great achievement that you dont see if you break the chain of consecutive days
To be honest, I need to work more on my grammar in my second language. This is the most frustating part in learning a foreign language. After so much time in reading, listening, writing, this should come more naturally to me without having spending a lot of time on memorizing grammer. If I dont like grammer, then I wont waste my time on it at the moment. The #1 reason people quit learning a foreign language, is they try to learn grammer at the beginning level. I do feel like my second language is improving because some of it is coming out more naturally.

Ideally much much less than you would get input only, but in any case the few bad habits you might get are completely worth it if it means otherwise you drop the lenguage imo!! a not completely effective method is better than no method at all!
Sorry for the wall of text :P
Wow! I was so excited when Mark said he lives in Mexico City. I'm from Mexico City. 🤗🤗 Loved hearing you guys speak in Spanish 🥰🥰
@@helloitsme7553 ermm there’s a LOT of countries where russian is spoken..
@@tae5yo oops my fault. Well at least the countries were Russian is spoken aren't as popular among tourists
@@helloitsme7553 the same goes for most other popular languages though but alright..?
I’m learning French and Spanish because I had the best European experiences in France 🇫🇷 and Spain 🇪🇸 , making them my top 2 countries
Merci Lindie pour cette vidéo. I really needed such a video to keep me motivated, given that I have been kind of lazy the past 3 months. Keep it up!
Qué lindo verte y escucharte en Español. Muy buen trabajo, saludos para Mark también!
How great! I am currently doing a "Spanish in two weeks challenge," for my channel. This couldn't have come out at a better time!
😂😂Not me watching videos on doing a 40 hours per week challenge on language learning while being in one of my harshest exam seasons ever
You can always retake exams, but you can never retake an internet challenge 😅😅
This was definitely motivating and keeps me going!!!
Glad to hear! Thank you for watching!
No sabia que hablabas españooool te admiro mucho, estoy prendiendo chino❤
Another challenge: learning a language when you have kids; figuring out how to incorporate your kids into it and still get something out of it yourself is tough, but can be done...I think...sometimes...if they're not tired or hungry...
“Challenge” también puede traducirse como “desafío” (creo que es más fácil de pronunciar que “reto” 😉 )
Reto es una palabra para yo puedo recordar.
You both are amazing! We really appreciate your sharing such valuable tips from your own experience.
Lindie, you are so beautiful inside and out!!!! What an amazing interview. Thank you!!
I just found your channel yesterday, thank you for your amazing tips! I feel like I just found a gold mine of rich information😃😃
Loved this! Have been struggling with Spanish, but now I'm excited to get back to it. Thank you for great videos as usual!
ohhhh linde

Lots of love to you sweetie💕
Take care good of yourself💕
umm..i wanna ask you a favour can you suggest some apps for learning french??
and some more free resources for korean??
and i wanna ask
i want to really start learning laguages so as y'll know i m gonna start with 한국인..
so should i only stick to korean now bc i just started learning it or should i learn french too??
Thank you so much for the kind message! I am glad you enjoyed the video.
For French I highly recommend Speakly! You can see a review video I made on my channel or check out the French resources page on my website lindiebotes.com/french-resources/
Really like Mark and his interviews
I had a great time talking to him :)
About the app strikes i dont like seeing how many days i worked without a break, i prefer to look back after a month or a year "oh i did 25/30day" or "350/365day", this is a great achievement that you dont see if you break the chain of consecutive days
definitely needed this!! thank you
Lindie I hope someday hear how you speak in ukrainian language.
Like 10% of las reglas gramáticas pues pra mim.
Wow!! I never heard of the that challenge but now I actually wanna do it. I think it would be really interesting
24:46 that’s sooo true! It happens to me too with Russian and Spanish 😕
A cross-over I'm very happy to see haha!
Thanks Ace!
Thank you for this video I really needed this since I want to become trilingual lmao
Thanks for watching!
I also take Hungarian lessons after work on Mondays 🤣 it really is rough lol
Why are we like this :')))
Elég nehéz nyelv, mi magyarok is megbukunk belõle a középiskolában... 🙂 🙂
Hello, does anyone know any other materials that I could use to learn and study European Spanish? Preferably free?
Like PDFs and online workbooks? Thanks :)
You can check out my Spanish resources page here! lindiebotes.com/spanish-resources/
Thank you Lindie!
Not neccessarily what you asked for but maybe a library close to you has some Spanish books? I used to borrow children's books there.
@@kathrinw.2035 I live in the Philippines, public libraries are closed, some are afar from the city since I live in the suburbs. Do you know any online books maybe for free?
@@nikola8972 Ohh okay. I wish. I used to use Wattpad, but as anyone can put stories on there many people write very poorly with loads of spelling errors etc, so I wouldn't really recommend it for learning languages. (Also there's more and more advertisement, as with so many apps)
WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME LINDIE AND MARK DID A COLLAB IM AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Telling you now! :P
Did you know that Indonesia has the largest population in the world? if you learn a little about Indonesia then your subscribers will increase a lot? because Indonesian people are very proud of people like you
Thank you, I needed that type of video ʕ´• ᴥ•̥`ʔ
EDIT* please do a video with Gabriel Poliglota, pleasee
MUCHAS gracias for this video, I TRULY needed it
Fantastic video!
Can u do videos for Spanish books that u can recommend😌cause I'm here Spanish beginner
Is this going to be my vacation for the year? Take a week off to do a whole week in Korean...?
... now that I'm thinking about it. HMM.
I can't believe that this video came in the best moment to me! Thank you SO MUCH Lindie, these times I didn't get any motivation for my studies in German.
I am so glad to read that! Thank you for watching!
Seriously I'm having a hard time finding motivation to learn French right now (though at the same time I want to be fluent at it so that I can understand recent JDG vids lol). I thought it would be the same like how I did in Spanish but this is gonna take me a bit longer lmao
Saludos desde Marruecos
What benefits learn language Japanese
I am aiming to speak like this in chinese i can only speak bookish conversation 🥲
Lindia has less of an accent than he even though he lives in CDMX. XD
But Mark is wayyyy more fluent than I am! Accent is just a veil to mask my lack of vocabulary haha
Spanish means friendships 😅
🇧🇷❤️
Youre both so cute. 😅
Ohio sucks but this guy seems cool
Why didn't you make this video in English 😭😢. It's so frustrating! I can't watch it. It annoys me too much.
Did you skip past the two minute mark? The whole thing is in English. Use the time stamps in the description.
@@LindieBotes No. I didn't. Ok. Sorry. I will try again.
Most of the video is in English but even if it wasn't, what's the problem? Is Lindie not allowed to make the videos in the language she wants? You have to stop thinking that the rest of the world is here just to meet your expectations.
@@David-uy8ot l know I was rude. I've already apologized. It's just that I am tired of Spanish. I'm stressed out. I'm sorry.
