- In late '90s Japan, owners of the Sega Dreamcast could connect to WebTV. Today we're going to explore the disc you would've received if you signed up for the service, and how you connected to WebTV from the console.

The WebTV dialing/connecting screen and the music is vaporwave af. Love it!
its so good
vaporwave gang 💪 mindspring memories, Whitewoods and SURFING are the best
Your past two videos relating to WebTV have been extremely entertaining! Keep up the good work! 😊
10:22 That photo of the briefcase was also used as one of the default profile pictures in Windows XP!
Guess What? It Still works thanks to Matt Man who did the possible with a DreamPi.
In the UK we had something called Dreamarena, then they sent a free update disc which let you use any ISP after they discontinued the Dreamcast.
It’s strange how advanced WebTV is compared to smart TV’s today, mine can’t even browse the internet.
My chromecast can
My google tv 2010 can
WebTV is pretty much an Android Box before Android even a thing...
Because I remember somewhere they say that the developers of WebTV later go on to also help on developing the base for Android
Even without the Connection, for me at least on how it operates, it does feels like those very VERY Early Android devices,
@@aribantala i miss when smart tvs were basically just low spec computers
With much cooler and polished looking software to boot 🫣
Michael MJD WebTV videos are always so enjoyable!
I'm not sure how I ended up on a video with Jeff Goldblum telling me about old internet tech but I'm cool with it.
When it pops up saying "Microsoft WebTV", the sound reminds me of when Sonic gets a Chaos emerald in Sonic Spinball.
5:40 Of course the Japanese version have a "Karaoke Machine" functionality available for it
I can't think of anything more Japanese to add in it besides the ability to spawn a Cassette Stove and a Yakiniku Girdle or a Shabu-shabu hotpot on demand
Never knew about that, thank you for letting us know and show us this awesome retrospective. ❤❤❤
bro has shown his inner bot
Wow, this channel never runs out of surprises.
I'm really a huge fan of SEGA dreamcast console! thanks for showing us some dreamcast contents that I didn't know before!!
This type of concept is really interesting probably because this is instead WebTV on a console ON A TV.
Which is funny, because WebTV is already something for a TV, but this makes it 2x weirder because it’s on a Console and then a TV.
Ironically WebTV / MSN TV as a platform / service basically acts as a ancestor to Xbox.
@@JeffreyPiatt and most streaming devices
I love your videos, obscure pieces of tech are one of my favorite things. Keep up the good work
This channel is an absolute gem!
loving the new webtv content!
Awesome video, Michael!
wow webtv on a dreamcast, great job micheal MJD 👍🏻
I love when he post
Did not even know this was a thing. Very cool!
Had the Phillips Magnavox WebTV box growing up. Picked this disc up at a Book Off in Tokyo recently. Worth the $10 just to navigate the offline mode and hear the familiar tones and jingles.
very interesting. I have a sealed copy from way back 2002. :)
I grew up using webtv. Good stuff
Ooh cool video
i love Dreamcast ❤️ my best thank you for this the first i see
Nice collab with your last video!
New video! Yes
Always tought of the dream cast as a earlier Xbox since all the work Microsoft did.
Cool finding.
Basically MS backstabbed Sega. Lol
What’s the saying about MS again about them crushing potential rivals?
Japanese people love travelling to Alaska for its acclaimed Italian food, specifically pasta.
"nah you dont want a webtv mug" got me cackling like an idiot LMAO
Love this❗❤
Good video
Very cool
Same thing but running on a game device… this preceded Microsoft’s own XBox! You can see where all that originated. WebTV wasn’t an only US Internet service in the beginning. It also debuted in Japan.
nope it did not. the xbox was released along with the ps2, dreamcast, and gamecube.
although if you mean that webtv preceded xbox, yeah thats correct.
I remember having web TV back in the day. I remember being excited when we bought it thinking how could it would be to do the things I did on the computer on to the TV...but I was disappointed by it at the end..
So good when u have cracked PaL sega dreamcast and u tested webTV
Early 90s Sega had a commercial near Nevada for renting games via phone cable. Sorta like internet download. There was a commercial - do you have that commercial? I have a friend who was in it
Sega Channel?
I love you, MJD 🌈
Amazing
Remember those old lg tvs that let you browse the internet and had a built in wii remote style controller. I believe it was the google g2 or the lm7600
Im So Early :D btw i Love ur Vids so much
I've honestly been thinking about trying this out on the Dreamcast I have at some point.
I recently got a Dreamcast at goodwill with sega bass fishing for $15 I love it. Know any good games?
Sonic Adventure duology.
wow, I love WebTV
As a fan of sonic and sega i loved this video!
Please do a teardown of the Webtv unit from the prior video
Nice
i spent months on that keyboard and it still doesn't work properly
6/10 it's webtv
So gooood
10:26 Is this a suitcase from Windows XP Guest account profile picture?
Those chat rooms remind me of WAP services for old phones.
Aww, it must’ve been frustrating how the connection kept failing. But it was funny in the video!
Was there no option to change the keyboard layout in this version? I also found your overwhelmed-ness at the Japanese keyboard pretty funny.
there isn't, trust me i've tried
Does the MIDI player work on the Dreamcast version?
The utopia boot disk will play those disk just fine. Burn the iso, pop it in and swap discs.
Fun fact: Web Tv was also available for Windows 98.
not actually webtv tho :)
I'm surprised that both WebTV and Sega's Dreamcast games made with Windows CE are one of the things that led to Original XBOX console.
Comment's Fact:
According to the XBOX 20th Anniversary documentary; WebTV/Windows CE team and DirectX team were in board meeting with Bill Gates on which team should be working on the console. In the end of meeting;Bill Gates sided with the DirectX team and gave Otto Berkes's permission to make a console which led to that console I mentioned.
Nice video on this. Sadly, I couldn't find anything useful about the original Japanese disc. It's not even saved to the Web Archive of TOSEC's complete multiple Dreamcast game collections. Seven or so, I think. Anyways, I heard something neat happens if you put the Japanese disc you own into a CD player. Not the translated one, the original Japanese disc you have. In a future video, could you put the Japanese disc into a CD player, play track two, then see what happens? Sorry, but thanks, anyways.
Man, this just made me curious to see that!
I would lile the iso for the English translated web tv please. I do own a dreampi
What genius (or logitech) create it?
You should be able to boot Japanese based Dreamcast games with a Europa boot disk
It's mjd time
When will this be available to the public? I'd love to connect to this with my Dreamcast :o
Could WebTV on Dreamcast play Doom like the other one?
Dunno but was Doom anytime officially released for Dreamcast?
(15:41) I think it would've originally shown instructions for navigating using a Dreamcast controller, but the files for that version of the page were likely not present, and the custom server admins likely used the page intended for one of the Sony WebTV terminals instead.
Yeah, that’s exactly the case.
Most of the work on the Dreamcast version has just been the translation and technical patches to deal with proper half-width text. And a lot of problems got remedied with the discovery of the 128bit SSL version as well.
@@WedgeStratos
Wow. I imagine that probably would've also applied to the Japanese market versions of some of the Sony WebTV terminal models that might've also been available.
oh yes!!!
Dava pra usar msn?
Is it just me or does the keyboard remind you of one of those old membrane keyboards
why does it have the modern family font
This is quite literally peak Y2K
I Remember The SAGA Webbrozer
They still have WebTV?
don't see the point of it when there was the seganet web browser that was free. also the bba was never cheap so stuck with the modem. wish they were sold with the bba and you could change it to the dialup modem instead if you needed that.
18:22
MADE ME LAUGH *HARD*
I Wonder If This Works On Redream-
nice video....
soo... just wondering.... would the dreamcast keyboard and mouse work with this and would this be an improvement?
the keyboard works, but the mouse doesn't
@@JarHead3894
At least the keyboard works... not that i would want to use it nowadays, but I despise letter picking with a controller/remote/arrow keys. It's so tedious. 😅
I don't know if you saw it but I had a post in your other video I have a dish Network web TV keyboard infrared that you can have just contact me let me know how to get it to you.
Did you know you can run NetBSD on Dreamcast?
12:50 "Sales are so strong"
Ah, if only it had stay that way.....
5:04 hmmm looks veeeryy familiar…. XBOX 360 BLADES????
Where?
18:20 trust me, you don’t want a webtv mug
try this with dreampi
I’m eating ramen noddles right now in the USA
but was it a match made in heaven
13:45 "Best 30 Italian Restaurants in Anchorage"... Like there are 30 Italian restaurants in Anchorage at all, or rather there were 23 years ago, OK 😁
Now write a new game to run on the Dreamcast. Do it!
20:25
I’m starting to think this guy likes webTV
nah you don't want a webtv mug
2:27 do not throw sega dreamcast web browser :(
I got advertising for random anime game on youtube vanced
