Famed Norfolk & Western J-class 4-8-4 #611 "The Spirit of Roanoke" made a triumphant return to her home in Roanoke, Virginia after a year long restoration at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer. The crowds became larger and larger as she approached Roanoke with her 17-car train of invited guests - including NS CEO Wick Moorman. The historic day culminated in a spectacular climb of the Blue Ridge Grade as #611 made easy work of her old stomping grounds.

Great work with the telephoto on the first couple shots and the last show was great seeing the immensity of the crowd, just for that location. I'm still in awe and the sheer amount of people that were trackside. I knew there would be plenty of rail fans. To see the general public out in force, especially in the amount seen in all of the video, all out to see the queen, is a WONDERFUL thing to see!

Fabulous James, one of the best videos of 611's return I've seen so far. Good to see your work once again.

Nice one James. I have watched quite a few clips of 611's return to steam, most of them shot in poor locations with helicopters in shot or loco hardly working. Your choice of locations on the other hand is excellent, showing 611 to best advantage. Hope you will be uploading more in the future.

Great shots. What a beauty. What superb power. You gotta love the J Class. Brilliant that all those people turned out to see her. Could you please send her over for a year or so for a hurry up on our prestige train The Ghan as she'd outperform the two diesels that currently pull the train :-) ……Hᴜɢʜ….ツ

Most of the video I have seen looks like she is running faster than 765 did. I hope they don't try to do a bunch of those super slow runbys up hill in a turn like they used to do and loose traction all the time. If you are going to run that many coaches you have to keep some momentum up whenever they wheel slip this monster doing a 5mph crawl for a photo op it is embarassing. 611 was made to run!!

bcbloc02 There is that one video of 611 starting a train on Saluda's steep grade.

Well it holds a 1000lb of sand I think, so that should help keep traction, but seems a shame to sand those big beautiful drivers if you don't have to!

bcbloc02 Indeed, I wish they would allow a run up to 90mph like the UK Bittern did last year.
