Magical band. For me..Kanami Tono(lead guitarist, composer) is the most impressive musician of the 21st Century. Pure genius as a composer and true Rock n’ Roll on stage. She is the Special One 🔥🤘❤️ Happy Birthday, Saiki 🥳❤️ Greets from Finland 🤘🇫🇮
Has anyone figured the time signature leading into the first chorus, right after Saiki's first "Do It!. They only do it once, as usual for Band-Maid. One thing to keep in mind with Band-Maid is they never repeat anything, it may be similar but never the same.
Everything’s in 4/4. What’s changing the feel is the riff actually starting on the “and” before the 1; ( if you’re familiar with the terms) Both Kanami and especially Akane move the notes around to make it feel like a signature change while keeping it all in 4/4. The only actual time signature change in any Band Maid song I’m aware of is in “Onset,” which has small sections of 5/4.
@@MusicMike747 I'm familiar. Yeah, "Onset" is a booger for sure. That dang Akane moving things around..... she is a master at that and does the same thing in the intro of "Manners" too.
It's very nice of you to react this awesome song of BAND-MAID on Saiki(lead vocal)'s birthday!! (FEB. 8th) She would be happy if she watched your reaction. Happy birthday Saiki!
Yeah, the drums got interesting. When this first came out someone called it "The Akane Show" with special guests. I don't think there is any part of this where she's just keeping the beat.
The reason MISA's bass is so dominant in their music. When the band started, Miku the band founder couldn't play any instrument at all. She had tried piano as a kid for a few months but quit. All she really had was a lot of vocal training for her voice. Their management/label thought the optics of the band would look better if there was a second guitarist, and Saiki flat out said NOPE!, so Miku picked up a guitar and at first it was more like an ornament or jewelry. Finally Akane told her that if she was going to carry a guitar, she needed to learn to play it. HOWEVER, since Miku was still learning, there were areas in their songs where a rhythm guitar SHOULD be. And it wasn't. So they asked MISA the bassist to step into that area musically. And that gave birth to the Band-Maid bass forward sound we all now and love today. Even today, with Miku being quite an accomplished rhythm guitarist, MISA's bass is still very dominant in their music, BECAUSE it has become their unique sound. And it identifies a Band-Maid song almost instantly.
So true and not only that, but this focus where Misa truly carries the so much of the rhythm is what allows Kanami to go off on her adventures during the verses which is what adds so much depth and texture to their music while still having catchy melodies and riffs. And it also allows Miku to jump between emphasizing the most front facing riff and those little extra sparks of flair that really make the songs stick out. The discordant notes in No God or the zaps in Rinne (both second verse, another trademark of Band-Maid). You can’t write their music with a traditional bass.
So far you've seen "No God" and "Shambles." They have _so MANY_ really outstanding songs. Your commenters will mention thirty or forty and that won't be everything. I saw someone mention *"from now on"* which is a fairly recent instrumental. It's a good suggestion because, like you say, the rhythm section in this band is _so good_ and yet they don't overwhelm the others.
Thanks for returning to my current favorite band. I grew up on Kiss, Rush, Van Halen, and lots of different genres from the 70’s and 80’s. It’s no exaggeration to say that Band Maid has far more musical variety than any of those individual legacy bands. In my opinion, the Maids could be described as a blend of those three artists. They have the precision and complex songwriting of Rush, the catchy riffs and dynamics of Van Halen, while giving the fans fun, individual characters in a cohesive theme and clever marketing. (Like Kiss) My Band Maid playlist is one of my longest. Easily over 50 songs. My favorite today is probably “Puzzle,” live from Tokyo Garden Theater 2023. Put me down as one vote for that one 🤘🏽
You've stumbled across something very special to this genre of music. I've never known a band to have one awesome song after another. They just never miss. 120+ songs an you gonna find it hard to find a bad one. You will have so many suggestions that you honestly won't know where to start. My suggestion would be "Onset" live from their RUclips channel, but it doesn't matter really, pick anything. New subby from Aust to share the ride. P.S. Pause as much as you want ... just back it up 5 secs or so. You cant afford to miss a second of these guys as there is always something happenin.
Fellow old dude here. I have been listening to all the various discoveries also and blown away by how incredible these new bands are. But Band Maid id by far my favorite the can literally do no wrong. The only difficult challenge is to find one clinker, one, in over 130 songs of theirs recorded over the last 10 yrs. Impossible yet true. I have all their CD's except very first one, so I started with Brand New Maid and New Beginnings and then on from there. I have 2 Blurays and another coming in late March. I can therefore assure you this is the best rabbit hole out there, and there are too many for this old dude, so I'm pretty much a Maidiac foremost but man Warning, Lovebites, etc wowsers what a lot of fantastic new music. Sir, you will never run out of stuff to react to, not at our age hah. The MV's like Shambles are wondrous but the live vids- oh my word, oh my word, Mabel.
Yes, this has been a voyage of discovery, never thought my page would become a Japanese metal page but thats were its heading, gives me so much pleasure seeing youth playing and enjoying metal and rock.
Thank you for your reaction Band-Maid, I love this band as well as Babymetal and LoveBites. If you want to know about Japanese bands, we recommend the Japanese girl metal band "Nemophila" The performers are a variety of bands that incorporate the essence of not only metal but also various music, and cover songs such as nostalgic Kiss are also distributed on the official channel. Of course, their guitar and drum techniques are amazing, making them a fun band to watch Greetings from Japan🤟
This song was commissioned to be the season two closing theme for the Netflix anime, Kengan Ashura. Orenji has some great documentary videos about the band that you should watch. Try 'Domination' LIVE next.
I'm about your age and I stumbled across Band-Maid about 2-1/2 years ago. I have since become a huge fan. They've written and produced a large catalog of diverse music: speed metal, punk, prog, fusion, folk metal, acoustic. They blend a variety of genre together in ways that are truly crossover. Pop fans and Metalheads alike love Band-Maid. One thing they do that is truly unusual is their knack for deconstructing their songs and transforming them in unexpected ways. One year they recorded a "Christmas Album" where they rewrote an album's worth of their songs into acoustic arrangements. "Puzzle" originated as a hard rocking song that furiously explodes like a bomb, but was later rewritten as a mournful, heartbreaking acoustic duet. Band-Maid can be very experimental about their songwriting: they'll try just about anything. As an April Fools prank they rewrote a few songs with the lyrics transformed into the traditional Kyoto dialect of the Geisha, with a backing track of tradition Japanese instruments, and released a pair of music videos where they were all beautifully costumed as Geisha. They write and perform anime themes. Their lead vocal needs to take breaks to rest her voice, so they write these amazing, jaw dropping instrumentals like "Onset" and "From Now On". Do not hesitate to watch their live performances: this is an extremely tight and well practiced group of musicians with a well planned and very entertaining show.
Hi Grandad from a very damp Staffordshire! Great review of my favourite band ever. Yeah, I mean ever (and I'm an oldie too). I even flew from the UK to Japan last October just to see them. I caught four shows in nine days, and they killed it every single time! Btw, it's Saiki's birthday today so happy birthday dear Sai-Chan (Saiki is lead singer). Here is a run down of these very special ladies. Maybe copy paste it for reference, Miku Kobato "Little Pigeon" - band founder - rhythm guitar and second vocals. Main lyricist. Claims to be an 810 year old pigeon and makes pigeon noises when she speaks. Po! Very good at poker, into horses - betting on them and eating them. Very clumsy, may fall into ditches. The heart and soul of the band. Saiki Atsumi "The Ice Queen" - Lead vocalist and frontwoman. The youngest member at 30 (TODAY). Into train spotting and collecting trainers (sports shoes). Very girly, into doing her nails and is a fashion icon. Really into Baseball and the Hanshin Tigers. Don't mess with her you will lose. But she has a heart of gold and a killer dry sense of humour. Recently started writing lyrics. Has final say on songs. Kanami Tono - "Kanamincho" or usually just "Mincho" for short. Lead guitar and an absolute genius songwriter. Total riff machine. Has two personas. Normally a tiny cute shy very polite lady who seems very innocent (the band have to explain dirty jokes to her). Until she puts on her guitar. As the band say "then she gets quite violent" - she turns into the shredding rock star she is. Takes guitar off, back to the little girl. Likes cake, coffee and is totally infatuated by Saiki. She adores Saiki very much, to everyone's amusement. Akane Hirose - "The Gorilla" on Drums. Seems to be the sane member of the band, but is actually the band clown. Has an enormous appetite, seen eating in a lot of MV's. Eats a lot of bananas including on stage, hence the nickname. But she is terrible at actual cooking. Usually has a big grin on her face while drumming manically, Akane was also a DJ (under the name DJ Achi) and likes dancing and goofing with MISA. MISA (all caps, no last name) "The Barefoot Assassin" on bass. An absolute bass prodigy, MISA is very shy onstage (a total clown offstage with Akane). Nickname comes from the fact she plays barefoot and looks like an assassin. Because of shyness often drinks onstage, you can often spot a bottle of Jim Beam on her amp. She drinks it neat. Lately drinking more beer than whiskey though, good girl. Doesn't say much, but when she does it's usually totally hilarious! At a lot of concerts you will hear the fans chanting MISA! MISA! MISA! which has become a slogan.
Thank you for the reaction. This is an amazing band, with a very large, diverse and astonishingly creative catalog. I'd recommend "From Now On" if you're in the mood for instrumental bliss, or "Puzzle," "Moratorium," or "Awkward" live from their 2017 Studio Coast concert (imo, their best live audio recording and a good intro to the band). The collective instrumental, vocal and songwriting talent in this group is insane, and they are my personal fav band (Japanese or otherwise) doing good old rock and roll with a modern sensibility.
A short intro to the band Miku (Small Pigeon) - Rhythm Guitar, second vocals, Lyricist, Band founder, entertainer Misa (The Barefoot Assassin) - Bass, beer and whiskey Akane (Gorilla) - Drums, Bananas or any food for that matter Kanami (Princess,Kanamincho or Mincho) - Lead Guitar, Genius composer, coffee and cakes Saiki (Ice Queen) - Lead Vocals, Mesmorizing stage performer

For any reactor asking for suggestions, I feel the need to ask for their double live video of 'Manners & Black Hole'. Black Hole will redefine your musical sensabilities.
Band-Maid rocks, period. You can't go wrong with anything from them. I would suggest "Moratorium" live, for a even heavier song...gives me flashbacks to Black Sabbath in parts. Great group to react with!

I think Akane is more of an octopus than a gorilla and not because she has nine limbs but because she has 5 brains, a brain in each limb and the controlling one in her head
