Bro with all due respect, I vehemently disagree with assessment on Cole. First off, I need to you definition of substance because I’m not comprehending nothing what you are saying. Cole has provided substance in damn every song that he been on or created. Now it might be what you want him, but let’s not pretend he wasn’t killing the rap game for practically 5 going on to 6 years with projects, features and singles. There is song called Pi on ‘Might Delete Later’ with Ab-soul and Daylyt and Cole. Ab-Soul and Daylyt, while they may not have the star power of Cole, are literally two of the best when it comes to penmanship. Cole literally went last, which is daring move considering who is on the song with him, and literally killed it, with some arguing that he may have had the best verse on the track. These are two guys renowned for technical rap genius and Cole matched with they bring to the table.
Secondly, you said that fans just wanted Cole to just do what he been doing like ‘Born Dinner’ and stuff of that nature. Maybe you are in different spaces than I am, but every single person, including his own fans have been wanting to diversify his sound, cadence, flow, etc. You know what the biggest complaint was about Cole? He doesn’t rap on beats that he doesn’t make. He refuses to allow producers to make beats for him. He doesn’t work with other artists. He rarely switches up his sound. I’m a massive Cole fan, love each of his projects because the offer something different whether it be conceptual, sonically, etc. and even I had to admit that some of criticisms were valid ones. People know Cole can rap but he hasn’t elevated to that level that even his own fans know he can go to. The Off Season was the first album Cole put out where people actually had to admit that Cole is great rapper and doesn’t have to be on some conscious stuff to keep people in engaged. His wordplay, cadence, punchlines, rhyme schemes were enough to people to finally put respect on his name. Along with the incredible features that he been putting out since really 2018, people are know aware of what Cole fans have been saying for years.
Thirdly, Tyler the Creator?? Really?? No disrespect, but no. Just no. Tyler’s music has a big fanbase, but his music is niche. Not everyone can get into Tyler’s music. Not to mention, being part of the Big 3 has other requirements and prerequisites. Things Tyler simply does not have and it doesn’t mean he is a bad artist, just he is in a different lane. The music him and Cole, KDot or Drake is entirely different so putting him there is weird.
Lastly, Kendrick and Cole are both renowned lyricist, but they do their music differently from one another. I’ll put it like this: Cole is a psychologist and Kendrick is sociologist. Both see issues in society that need to be addressed but they do it in completely two different ways. There are things that Kendrick can do better than Cole at and vise versa. Otherwise there was no way Cole would be considered as one of the 3 greats alongside him.
Lastly, about the song. I don’t like the song but I don’t hate either. I’m pretty much indifferent to it. Cole was trying to keep in the same lane as Cash Cobain on the song due what it is about and the sonically sound of it. Just so happens didn’t work out and fell flat on its face. Every artists especially the greats have dropped wack verses or songs.
But that my two cents on everything so Yh
