Wow the cgi is flawless! Capturing every detail of not just the mouth and face expression but the lines and wrinkles of the actor’s face as he talks and moves! I can’t wait to see it more in future projects!
What are we gonna have to do? Their process is really solid and should give nearly 1 to 1 results, yet it's still very uncanny. More so than the Blue Dot Metahuman demo.
Definitely PS3 and PS4 era facial animations. Even Death Stranding had much more amazing facial capture animation to the point of no uncanny valleyness. But then again, this isn't Kojima making a short.
@@simongravel7407 I think you need a refresher to remind yourself how good it looked. And... yeah? Outsourcing has always been a thing in game development. What point does this prove? Facial capture is not the whole thing, it's the animation of facial expressions too. Capture is more flawed than people think.
That was so realistic. Like I almost thought it was actually him until I realized it was CGI. My goodness how far we have come with technology these days that it can almost fool the human eye.
Beautifully done! It took a moment to notice the CG, but it's still always the eyes that give it away first. But Holy Heckin Holly has technology advanced enough to do this and so wonderfully realistically, too. Between the motion capture studios and Boston Dynamics, I'm cautiously optimistic about the future.
Incredible! The possibilities with this are endless. This can go fad beyond the gaming world and movies. And to have Neil Newbon feature in it is brilliant👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
very interesting... still very much uncanny valley effect when Neil is head-on, since it doesn't have the benefit of those shadows that are present in the profile view that hide a lot of what looks uncanny. and the eyes and slightly nudged-too-far mouth shapes are also elements I noticed, but I'm an animator so perhaps my eye is more critical of stuff like that.
This is So realistic, The texture and the details are great. I love to see such Presentation trailers, that can bring out and reflect the soul of the actor
Took this 30-something's brain a second to realize this isn't Neil.... nicely done because the uncanny valley distortion wasn't bad at all for me! (It's subjective for everyone, just wanted to share my experience) Love technology
The detail in the performance and in the model work is fantastic! Its beyond impressive well done! Neil did a fantastic job and so did the people behind the scenes!
The animation looks fantastic and it's a great showcase for the tech. ...The rendering...I think sometimes less is more. Can't put my finger on it. Maybe too much baked shadow in the texture, too much normal map impact, the shader. The skin looks so detailed, crisp and pronounced it reminded me when 4K TVs came up and everybody wanted more make up. I know, Ten24 can do detail but... holy shit ! :D
Uncanny Valley? More like Astarion Ascended! serious though, there was no U.V for me. I suspected it only because of the dialog. Then came to comments to confirm. Great work and great choice of actor. Also I can listen to Mr. Newbon all day.
This is the future of story-telling. I'd like to see how this will break into media news, telling stories of war and victory. Very timely now that we are hearing the rumbling of war in the near distant future. Crucial tech for crucial scenes. Bravo to the team that developed this tech and the movie-makers. We need more!
Interesting project :) It does look like it has aged his skin by about 7 years though . Maybe the lighting is a little bit off so it really brings the natural wrinkles increases to the face more so than normal.
I think it was a true replica of his face at the time. There is footage of him during the filming. We're just used to everything being "air brushed" in this type of stuff.
This is so cool. The advances in the tech have come so far. His face was captured perfectly. I have seen footage from behind the scenes. It really is a true likeness. The minute details. The subtle nuances. Very close to life. There is still something inorganic about the whole thing though. A stiffness. A coldness. It captures life. It doesn't exude life. Just something on the periphery that doesn't register mentally. I can't wait to see the future leaps and bounds this tech will present to the world. Well done.
I know we're likely never going to achieve an escape from the uncanny valley. But man. It is so cool to just watch artists chasing after that goal. The fun is in the chase, not the catch. That's how it is for me anyway.
So deep. This makes me think that we are living in an era where there will be several technological revolutions and innovations. We need to surf this wave, otherwise we will be left behind.
Gosh, Ive been waiting for this since the first trailer dropped. Amazing work, perfect casting for this, the CG animation is so detailed and rich, also as an animator I am amused by this work, great job!
The level of details and the fluidity of the movements are scary - in a good way. The only thing that gives away that's CGI is the eyeballs when they're in close-up and in full light
Oh my-! It's incredible! Congratulations to the team for their work. Every part of the video is so flawless, from the moment Neil is CGI to the moment the set is shown, it's so awesome! Neil's acting and speaking are brought out perfectly thanks to technology! Also, excellent casting! Another level has been unlocked with this video! Good job! 👏
Hello, great video. The special effects and motion capture are incredible. And the actor is very good! I wanted to know, what was the purpose of these videos? Please ?
We are glad you liked it! We made this film for a couple of purposes. Firstly, to demonstrate our PURE4D 2.0 pipeline for digital doubles. It’s the same technology used in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II & III. We also wanted to show the high calibre of animation possible with a limited team and budget. We are not specifically a creative company, but a service for facial capture/animation processing. However, we managed to make the entire film in-house.
This is fascinating, how fast everything is more realistic and how you can representate the facial expressions with so much detail. I'm curious to know how this is gonna advance with years passing. Amazing animated short and amazing work! Greetings frrom Argentina and have a nice week!
It’s always the mouth/teeth that seem a little off in cgi (and hand movement). Maybe I’m being nitpicky but I don’t think this captured his actual teeth, and the way he moved his mouth reminds me of Paul Bettany for some reason, but not really how Neil moves his mouth imo. I also think they went harsh on his complexion 😭 But still cool to see anything with Neil Newbon and cgi and motion capture advances are cool
Wait this is really cool. It’s so…. Interesting. It’s really Intriguing. This was amazing and had my full attention for the entire thing. Amazing work. ❤
Was this actually done with MoCap, or was it modeled on one of Neil's public speaking events? I'm used to his facial expressions being so much more animated that I clocked the animation faster than I expected I would. The detail is so good.
Yes this is his real performance. We specialise in facial capture and animation, and use 4D facial capture systems to obtain his exact likeness and movement. We will have a tech explainer out soon to describe the process in greater detail. For now, you can find out more on FX Guide, which has released a BTS article on the film. Or check out our PURE4D 2.0 page on our website. Hope this helps!
This is beautiful. Such a lovely tribute to the acting industry and how important actors are. As someone who wants to become a professional actor, it feels so gratifying to see it all represented like this, and the casting for this is perfect. Neil is an absolute treasure. 🥰
I'm simple. I see Neil Newbons Name in the title - I click the video.

Ah yes, Neil "Newborn" lol

Double: it's a short of-

argh
It still took me 30 seconds to realize that this was motion caption. It's kind of terrifying how fast is technology evolving these days.
Amazing work, and excellent casting! Can’t think of anyone more fitting to represent the artistry of full performance capture! 🙏
Yes, Neil has some incredible talents!
Whenever Neil is in CG form, I still always see Kamski in him. Imagine a DBH2 with this level of detail for Kamski now.
i know him from bg3, and when i realised he’s also kamski my mind was blown lmao

This is really well made, but I don't understand people saying they couldn't tell it was cgi, considering it still gives uncanny valley vibes lol

I feel disrespectful watching this on the toilet now
It's pretty cool, but it still LOOKS CG, even if the mocap is pretty damn good. Reminds me of Death Stranding, in a way.
They should replace that frigging annoying Nicole Kidman preview they always show at AMC Theaters and replace it with this!! This is gorgeous 😍
there's too much detail. the human eye would never be able to actually pick up on that much. it's creepy as hell. neil is great tho.
