- Aamir Khan is one of the most popular and influential Bollywood actors in India today. He became a star of Hindi cinema in the 1980s, and his greatest commercial successes have been the highest-grossing Bollywood films of all time.
Yet in 2012, Khan's career took an unexpected turn. Together with a childhood friend, he created a TV series called Satyamev Jayate which became the first prime time TV show in India to expose the country's most critical social issues - from rape to female foeticide and dowry killings.
Aamir Khan was used to portraying macho men on a quest for vengeance and belongs to an industry accused of denigrating women and encouraging sexual violence.
But now, the 48 year old actor with Peter Pan charm risks his career by challenging men to re-examine their attitudes and behavior towards women, confronting the spiraling wave of gender-based violence in India and defying age-old stereotypes.
The snake charmer follows Khan on a journey through India's TV and Bollywood film industry, as he attempts to change the way Indians perceive and treat women.
From the set of Satyamev Jayate, the film follows Aamir Khan backstage to his new Bollywood blockbuster Dangal.
Khan's quest ultimately opens a window into a country in crisis and into the changes it is undergoing.

The lady at 27:00 has either not seen the movie she is talking about or is intentionally being disingenuous about the nature of the way that the word 'Balatkar'(rape) is being used in this film. Also its not used every other scene like she is trying to assert. It is limited to a single scene. For anyone interested the context is that Aamir Khan's character changes the word 'Chamatkar'(miracle) to 'Balatkar' in the transcript for a speech that a fellow student is delivering in the front of the whole college. The fellow student is trying to sound smart by using words which he doesn't know the meanings of(we see in the rest of the film that he gets through college by rote learning). So, actually, the change is made to teach a lesson about the dangers of rote learning. The crux of the joke is not 'Balatkar' (rape), the humour comes from the fact that the speaker doesn't know the difference between 'Balatkar' and 'Chamatkar'. In no way is it glorifying rape or demeaning the victims of rape as she tries to assert. Notice how i used the word 'Balatkar' several times in my paragraph without glorifying rape. Context is important!!
This lady think,rape can happen only to woman,she should check with any police station,to clarify that.
That's not what she is saying. My main issue with her is that she maybe misleading people watching the documentry who have not seen 3 idiots and may never watch it. These people will just leave the documentry thinking aamir khan is just some rich hypocrite who is exploiting social issues for commercial success. Which ofcouse is not the case.

The show was a step towards acknowledging the issues because first step towards addressing the problem is to realize it exists. The show was a step towards a change but most people are happy in their position that they don’t want to change as they don’t want to work towards it. Therefore, they will try to close any possibility of change.

Well done for raising this dark issue in the public domain. The people who calling this a commercial gimmick are pretty much critics with no stance. It will be hard and really tough to change the societal norms but don't give up. It is those that never gave up eventually changed our existence.

This programme doesn't have a high viewing figure tells a lot about what sells in India.
It's because this is Al-Jazeera. Its a state owned propaganda channel that's it. Its hugely hinduphobic as well. This channel never portrays India in even a slightly good light. Just observe their selection of filters and scenes. Leave out the subject matter.
The show Satyamev Jayate was hugely popular in India and people still watch it's clip today. It did not put any damper on Amir's household popularity. In India, we discuss loud and clear about our problems, hopefully we'll be better and stronger because of it. And maybe other countries that enjoy more soft power than India will realise what they are doing wrong and support us in our positive endeavours.

A path to bring positive changes in a society is never easy and is met with a lot of obstacles. God knows Amir Khan's true intentions whether he is doing it for fame or money but in the process if he manages to change the heart of even one person, he has done great service to human kind.
All the people who are speaking against him don't want to empower women and want to keep the suppressed. Women, as a human being, deserves the respect and the rights equal to men. If you want change, start educating yourselves, your parents, siblings, children, friends, and neighbors about the right values.
