I know you're not a fan of generic systems or using D&D for everything, but Kevin Crawford's Godbound is *the* game system of choice for running Exalted that won't leave your players scratching their heads, staring at a 400 page rulebook trying to will it into making sense.

  • @heymitch100

I would have included Glorantha in my list. I think it's a terrific setting for those who want a fantasy setting that doesn't feel like just another D&D-derived world.
Also, while the creator is pretty controversial, if you're willing to separate the author from his work, Tekumel was a really well-developed world that does a great job of fleshing out it's cultures and history. Definitely some sword and planet vibes, too, which is a plus for me.
Lastly, I would have included Talislanta, another unique, well-developed early rpg setting.

Ah Exalted. I'm not saying the 3rd edition rules are dense or anything but I once saw three copies of the core book on the same table, and time and space were starting to fold in around them...
Glad to see Eclipse Phase get some praise. The setting is almost too detailed for my tastes as a GM but as a player, I really enjoy it, been playing in an online game for years now and it's still going strong.

Kult, Cyberpunk (2020 in particular) and Tribe 8 are three games with fantastic settings. Love that SLA made the list. Great setting and despite a mess of a rules system and character creation being scattered across the book I still ran a few great sessions that friends still talk about nearly 2 decades later. Exalted is my favorite setting and I've collected all but 3 or 4 supplements but the rules are so obtuse I've never run it. Just the initiative system looks like a pain in the ass.

Having played exalted 3e for 2 years the combat is actually much simpler than it seems during play, the real problem is how charms interact with it.
That said I still prefer Exalted2.5 or Chronicles of Darkness and wish Exalteds 3e got some more generic/flexible combat rules. 3e still has the best most satisfying grappling rules I've ever seen and have tried to take into my own version of Chronicles.

I've only recently foind out who you were, but I've been gaming since the early 90s and am quite surprised how much of your opinions on games mirror my own.
I think you hit the nail rigjtnon the head with Exalted, Eclipse Phase, Dark Sun, LotFP, and Degenesis. I missed out on SLA Industries, but you make it sound like something up my alley.
A setting that I was quite enchanted with that never got much of a chance was Gloomwrought for 4e D&D. It was basically a mix of the film Dark City with a bit of Wraith the Oblivion and gothic horror thrown in. The premise was that it was a sort of nexus for the Shadowfell/Domains of Dread. If you travelled the mists of Ravenloft you could sometimes find your way there.

The coolest setting is from a little known norwegian game called Itras by. It's inspired by surrealism and movies like The Island of Lost Children and The Delicatesse. Nothing else like it. The system might not be of your liking as it's very story-gamey, but the book is mostly setting.

You're spot on with Exalted and Eclipse Phase, two settings I'd love to run to this day and have tried quite a few times yet always end up despairing about overly complex or just plain bad rules systems dragging everything down.

Darksun was, for me, by far the best D&D setting. It's a real shame that we're unlikely to see it return.
SLA for me is one of the great UK games. I am a bit biased though. The paralels with how celebrity and internet culture has developed are amazing. The community that developed around SLA in the late 90s and early 2000s on mailing lists and message boards was incredably creative.

Hey Grim, really enjoyed this list and look forward to exploring some of these worlds. There's a reason why the top ten format is popular, who doesn't want to hear about a bunch of great games and settings? So keep the cheap exploitation going!
I'm a big fan of the Eberron setting, I love its blend of pulp action and noir. For me, it strikes the right balance of providing a good amount of lore while also leaving enough unanswered mysteries to be explored. Are there any other pulpy or noir games/settings you would recommend?

  • @Eron_the_Relentless

Lots of stuff to bring up here, in alphabetical order and with no other constraint:
Aces & Eights - a pure western game with pure western conceits. Boot Hill and others are mostly about gunfighting, Aces & Eights cares about the genre as a whole
Anomalous Subsurfance Environment 1 - I didn't like 2-3 as much as it steered too far toward comedy. ASE 1 presents a bleak post apocalyptic fantasy world with overarching Sorcerer Kings, high technology of a forgotten age, Cults worshipping orbital gods (satellites), all manner of dinosaurs roaming free, firearms being common place, and all of this grafted on a B/X chassis.
Arduin - Probably the first weird fantasy setting told mostly through rules because explaining things is for nerds
Empire of the Petal Throne - Probably the best early weird-fantasy setting, though the author had bad views it doesn't detract from the work which is highly south-american inspired.
Helveczia - The setting is sort of a definitively picaresque "the middle of europe"
The Mutant Epoch - Sort of a gonzo blend of Mad Max (especially 3) and it's various rip-offs of the 80s.
Mutants & Masterminds 2E - By far my favorite non-comic supers setting. Has seemingly every trope represented in a good way (even some very dumb ones), and the company hadn't disappeared up it's own poop shoot yet.
Mystara - In the case of setting informing rules and rules informing setting, Mystara deserves a special place due to how it blends with BECMI
The Nightmares Underneath - Middle-eastern inspired D&D-style setting with the conceit being that the world is a land of dreams and that 'dungeons' are nightmare incursions into that dreamworld. Monsters themselves are these nightmares.
Planescape - What can I say except of course. I lament this setting's death at the hands of WotC. Only TSR products are canonical IMHO.
Red Tide - Kevin Crawford's first and best setting. Works with B/X like Mystara works with BECMI. Fantastically evocative and either informs or twists the standard D&D genre in exciting ways. While I recognize Scarlet Heroes, I lament it's existence as it is a pale imitation of the original and gets all the press.
Talislanta - Another wholely alien setting, and depending on the ruleset many conceits are different as well. It is much more than "no elves", but it cheats at this concept by having half a duzen races nearly exactly like elves but not called "elves". 2E and 4E are often cited as the best iterations by it's fans. I prefer 4E.

Right. Watching this while snacking on a footlong cookie. All hail a slow and delicious death. LOL!!! Either way, I'm currently in an exalted game, and really, the issue is very strictly the charm system. They give you too many powers, and you're busy in combat trying to put together the right attack. Now, you can fix this somewhat by just having things noted down, like what your attack does rather than struggling through all the charms, but still. I like the combat flow, the description system, and even the magic is okay. The charm system leaves a lot to be desired.

Not originally the same setting, but attaching Blade Runner to Alien sets you up for excellent sci-fi horror and corporate dystopia. Everything from space teamsters to android slavery to detective noir to action horror. (Thanks to Free League for the recent games and materials).
Also, Midnight. It is fantasy heroics, but the gates to the afterlife are closed, reincarnation is perpetual, the dead dwell among us, the gods disappeared, and an ultimate evil overlord running an entire world. Or was that the theme of a Prog album?
Anyway, the setting is probably wasted on d20 or 5e type mechanics.
