  • Found a player that solos the voices correctly (java SIDplay2), so all synchronization and ring modulation effects are visible. I also wrote a program to draw the wave forms instead of filming my oscilloscope! :)
    On this one I had to patch the code in the SID file to get all 4 tracks, including the 4 bit sample playback.

    I really love how the 3 main SID channels look around 0:50 and 3:30
    I can hear them in my head anytime but to see it visually is simply fantastic, especially after this many years...

      iirc whenever you adjust the volume register in your program it makes a small click noise at a specific frequency and that click can be repeated several times in the span of a second allowing you to change the pitch of the click. Doing this a shit load of times leads to what you hear.

    How does this song have 4 voices even though the 6581 SID chip has 3 voices.

    • @JeroenTel
      @JeroenTel 7 лет назад +20

      It's actually not 4 voices. The SID chip has 3 channels (voices), but on top of that it has a volume register that can be set to 16 difference volumes (and this is what can be used to play samples with. Only 4 bit (compared to for example CD, which has 16 bits per sample). They key to this (keeping the 3 SID channels audible) is to keep the middle volume exactly in the middle.
      $F = max volume, $0 is min volume $8 = DC (standard) volume.
      So the illusion becomes that there is a 4th channel.

    How come there are 4 channels?

    • @TheBeeshSpweesh
      @TheBeeshSpweesh 5 лет назад +4

      If you already know about the C64 SID chip, they you may have known that it has 3 channels. The 4th channel used here isn't even implemented by the designers of the SID chip. It's just a flaw in the 6581 model of the SID where the 4-bit master volume register affected the DC bias of the audio output, even if the 3 main channels are silent. This was fixed on the 8580 model.
      If the programmer updated the 4-bit volume register quickly enough, they created a 4th channel which could play raw PCM. This is extremely CPU-intensive on the C64 (as well as many other 8-bit systems), so it was meant to be used in non-gameplay parts, such as the loader and/or the title screen.

  • @verbicide4736
    @verbicide4736 8 лет назад +3

    I wonder how you managed to record the other voices without the 4th one mixing in... I couldn't figure that out when playing around in JSIDplay2.

    • @RolfRBakke
      @RolfRBakke  8 лет назад +27

      +Collision Detection
      You have to patch the SID file to silence the sample track.
      Dig around, look for writes to the volume/filter enable register $D418.
      If code look like this :
      LDA#$08 (or another number)
      STA$D418
      it is initialization of the register, leave this alone.
      The other one(s) need changing. If the music does not use filters, try NOP'ing them out. ($EA,$EA,$EA)
      If the code looks like:
      ORA$XX(XX)
      STA$D418
      you can change the first line to LDA#$08. Add a NOP if 3-byte ORA is used.
      If it looks like:
      ORA#$x0
      STA$D418
      self-modifying code is probably used for speed, look for and disable writes to the #$x0 part of the code and then change the first line to LDA#$08.
      You may have to do the full patching.
      Change the writes to $D418 to a JSR to a vacant place in memory, write this code there:
      AND#$F0
      ORA#$08
      STA$D418
      RET
      If CPU time is strict, you may have to change JSR and RET to absolute jumps, JMP, shaving off 6 CPU cycles.
      If CPU time is even stricter, it may corrupt the song.
      Note:
      There is more ways to skin this cat. And this is straight from the top of my head, and may contain errors :)

    • @verbicide4736
      @verbicide4736 8 лет назад +4

      I'd assume the way they played samples is by timing these clicks just right to make certain sounds, just as programmers did with 'beeper speakers' on computers like the Apple II and the IBM Computer (I'm not too sure if that's what IBM's earliest computer was called, so I'm just calling it that for now.), and, I'm not sure, but I'm guessing that the volume the tune is changed to would be the volume of these clicks, too.

      that's a quirk from the sid. the 4-bit volume dial from each voice can be manipulated to play pcm samples, in 4-bit depth. that's 'cos that volume dial produces clicking sounds when the volume changes, if i remember correctly. on the 8580, the second and last revision of the sid, commodore pretty much removed that noise, making samples very, very quiet. so that's where digiboost comes, it's a hack for making this 4-bit pcm sample playback louder on the 8580, nearly the same level as the original 6581.
