Welcome! Now its time to follow up the original SMB with its just as iconic and fun sequel, Super Mario Bros. 2! A game I feel is vastly superior to the original in all aspects, more variety in the world and graphics, unique gameplay styles with 4 different playable characters, a tougher challenge, and of course, the brilliant soundtrack by Koji Kondo. While roughly the same amount of tunes as its predecessor, the themes I personally have always found much more catchy and fitting to the atmosphere of the game. The "Overworld BGM" being my personal favorite of the NES trilogy, and with so many more classics like the "Title BGM", "Player Select", "Underground BGM", "Boss" and the "Ending / Cast" themes, some of these tunes still making there way into remixes and reinterpretations in modern Mario games and soundtracks! Definitely one of Koji Kondo's best works, delivering us satisfying tunes again with his Sound Driver he created, and taking things a step further implementing Drum Samples into two of the tracks, "Underground" and "Invincible" benefiting greatly from it. As well as throwing some extra DPCM samples with the Boss Hit noise, and fun fact with the last SFX on here, "Player Dies", is supposed to play when you're hit on your last heart, but due to the fact that the sound engine silences DPCM samples on music track changes, the sound does not play as the Life Lost jingle takes priority as just described.
Of course this game has part of its discussion with the association of the whole Doki Doki Panic fiasco, but that makes it part of the fun of the legacy, and some of the carry overs that things that have become apart of the Mario universe because of what was implemented as the basis for what we got as Super Mario Bros. 2, and when Japan got this version as Super Mario USA in 1992, it's all wonderful fun of what this game has become for us. And this upload continues the new Patreon thanks at the end, new names will be added immediately on the next upload when pledged at Tier 2 or 3, thanks for those who support!

One of the best games ever made, to this day. Pure gaming joy, strange mystery, a touch of gambling, wiggly legs, turnips, sun demons, keymasters, weird egg vomiting dinos, falcon mouth gates. A dream game for sure.

I don't think of it as a dream. I like to interpret Subcon as a real place that can be visited through dreaming. As in, it still exists while you are awake, but outsiders can only make contact with it while asleep. Maybe it's like the Matrix, or maybe your soul goes there while your body stays behind. It's never really explained.
The official story of the game states that Mario dreamed of the people of Subcon calling out to him for help, but when he woke up he learned that Luigi, Toad, and Peach all had the same dream as him, suggesting that there is something objective to it outside of their imaginations.

I much prefer this game to the "real" Super Mario 2. It's much more fun and a lot more lively, including the soundtrack.

one of, by far, my weirdest game experiences. when i was a kid (80's baby) and had this game, NOBODY knew about it, heard of it, or believed that _I_ had seen or heard of it either. schoolmates, neighborhood friends, people who'd *_been to my house and played my games_*..nobody. literally always felt like something out of 'dark city'.. long after my NES disappeared in time with all its games, id remember and think of this game and ask people about it, and still, nobody knew of a super mario 2. fast forward till literally like high school, once the internet and school computers became a thing, i could only find bits about the game here and there but still nobody who'd ever played it. wasnt till i was already a young adult that suddenly EVERYBODY missed and had nostalgia of this game, and online ive even seen it become something of a cult classic. to the rest of the world im sure its just a passing memory of no import, but to me this game has literally always felt like some sort of lucid dream that popped up out of nowhere. my mom doesnt remember ever having bought it, i cannot fathom where i could've gotten it from, and my younger brothers never remember playing it with me.

I just beat that game on a real hardware (NES) like 2 days ago, it was challenging but fun. no emulator, no port and no save states (especially no warps), just grab a bunch of 1ups and more mushrooms and pass through all the levels without going back all way to the beginning of the game. 🙂

I always preferred this to SMB1 cause it had a fun variety of characters, catchy music, and neat gameplay. It didn't hurt that the cartoon tended to use music and characters from this instead of SMB1, as well.

So sharp and well placed in the room. On console via TV it's rather mashed together, but sounds warmer.

Same kinda. I was already terrified of everything and this game was like playing Mario on acid. I hated this game so much because I couldn't beat it, the mechanics were foreign, and the enemies were from some other bs somewhere. Picking up onion/garlic bulbs and tossing them as weapons like what the hell
