Paul Ben-Haim’s Symphony No. 1 was one of those “first-time events” because it was the first symphony a Jewish composer ever composed in the Land of Israel; the first of its kind to be premiered by an Israeli orchestra and of course, his first one. Ben-Haim was born in Munich to German Jews and realized his education in Germany. The rise of the Nazis forced him into exile in 1933, choosing the British Mandate of Palestine as his new home. By combining his abilities as conductor/composer, he immediately decided to organize musical life in the region, mostly because there was a massive wave of equally talented European Jews that were fleeing the same monster. The symphony was composed between August 1939 and June 1940: the first months of WWII. While it certainly reflects all hardships the world and Jews in Europe were living those days, it is a purely abstract work that nonetheless uses Jewish folk music as source of inspiration.

A deeply well written work, worthy of recognition in today's concert halls. This composer is new to me, I'm impressed.

Just saw and listened to it my first time, performed by munich Philharmoniker with Lahav Shani. What a revelation! Blew me away! Am I wrong or is he at some point citing the Jupiter theme from Holsts Planets?

A beautiful and important symphony. Should be more performed and known. You can feel the deep sorrow in the slow movement. Paul Ben-Haim was israels most important composer I think. Great performance here. ******

Lovingly and intensely emotional, this fine symphony has the stamp of originality, especially in its' slow movement. I admit to my concern that the first movement's development would ever develop, and that the finale seemed odd, and I didn't quite "get it" at first, but my doubts were resolved, and I both enjoyed, and was discomfited, by the work.
