Hard to believe it remains a good mid-level Wi-fi 5 (AC) option in 2020! In large part due to it’s excellent engineering and performance to start of with. Then Asus upgrading the dual core CPU to 1GHz (from 800MHz) as well as continuing firmware updates over time which have also added useful features like Ai Mesh. Great job, Asus!
I've been rolling the thought around for over a month now, mainly because of the price. Thanks for helping make my mind up on purchasing this very high end router.
I've been very happy with this router. I have the Asus DSL RT AC68U. It would be nice though to have some more (8) at least ethernet LAN Ports and perhaps a 10Gbe option. That would make it a perfect piece of gear all up. Also a smaller and more affordable way to take advantage of its AiMesh without having to buy additional routers.
I was debating whether to go AC about 6 weeks ago, but decided to go with the N66U instead. I would've been pissed if I'd picked up the AC66U and then had the AC68U come out right away. Really happy with my N66U.
No joke this is the best router I have ever used! So easy to set up and the speed is insane. Managed to bridge cisco 3925 modem/router so now it's just acting as modem, The wifi on it was terrible, dropouts, crap speed and weak signal. Hooked up this Asus router to the modem and it's pure heaven, 3 times better signal strength, wifi speeds are almost as fast as my 100mbit cable from lounge room, no drop outs. My lan speed hasn't suffered going through a router either. Highly recommend Asus RT-AC68U for anyone in Australia on bigpond ultimate cable, dump the router/wifi on cable modem and bridge it to this Asus router, Will solve all your wifi issues!
Just bought one today. User interface is easy to use. This is however a consumer products, which means that it lacks some advanced options. If you understand networking, Mikrotik is probably a better option.
I checked out its details on ASUS' site and it is indeed a WIFI switch. Seems the one presented in this video is indeed a production sample with incorrect labelling.
It's really an amazing router and fast give it best to support you and it's fantastic for gaming but you will have a LAN problem in which for example if your internet speed was 100mb it will give you 30 I restarted the modem for 10minutes then opened it and i didn't get the same problem and another problem was is that Ethernet cable connected to an xbox it shows that you have high packet loss the soul option in my channel
I recently had gigabit internet installed, this device will only get up to 500mbps on the WAN port. Had to use the Netgear r6300 to get full internet speed on the WAN port. The wifi connectivity is also very good, so using it as a wifi access point only. Disappointing because the interface is great. If you have less than 500 mbps internet connection, it would be fine.
On all the WAN ports? You can change them from LAN to WAN in the firmware. This router is advertised as a gigabit router, including the WAN port. Shame if it isn't actually one.
interesting .. i have the ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router, and i must say out of all the routers iv'e used, this one has the best range .. maybe i'll upgrade to the new ASUS RT-AC68U .. ?? we shall see
this device is a router, you need both a router and a modem for internet access. the best advice i can give is to google " ADSL2 Modem for (Your service provider)"
1:15 that says LED on/off.. not WIFI on off? There's two LED switches? The side and the back? Where's the second LED? Or is this a pre-production sample?
hi there. would this essentially be a good solution for someone wanting to back up their data from a computer in one location to the next? IE: I could set this router up with a large-capacity external hard drive at home - and I could access that data from computers at my office?
i have a question how can i setup my phone to my asus router rt-ac68u. i am trying to set it up so i can remotely do change setting when i am not home and shut down the internet on the kids when they are on the computer for to long
Will my wrt 54gs repeater (ddwrt) benefit? The repeater is about 50 feet away. Is this different from a 5g chip router? I have an older as us rt n16 router and I might use it for my repeater instead of my linksys Thanks
I have a question when I connect to my ps4 do I get both 2.4 and 5 ghz bands because I know when I try to connect with my phone it gives me the option of one of the two. Does it automatically assign both to ps4 or only one. And does this affect internet speeds.
which is better between seagate-central vs LaCie d2 Quadra USB 3.0 as an external hard drive to be connected to this router so that to get faster performance and sharing files of that drive between different devices like laptop, wifi tv,phones and pc. usb vs ethernet? seagate transfer speed is not provided in their site
Ready to buy a router but we have 13 wireless devices on 3 floors-never are all on at once but wonder if this can handle it. I'm not happy that I cannot buy direct from Asus & from reading reviews from Amazon service time is awful. There was terrible but detailed info there. When was this released-where available? He said name so fast-hard to catch-RTac68U is what I got. Please do video giving id slower!
Currently using the AC68U in my household, works great with a lot of coverage and speed. However, I have like one corner of the house that I need wifi in that it doesn't reach, what would be a good repeater or way to extend the wifi to the room?
Do you have a spare power point in that room? Look up some wifi boosters, All you do is plug them into spare socket, Just make sure you get one that uses the same bandwidth as your router.
It's just a router (well, WAP, firewall, switch, and basic NAS too technically) not the modem, so you'd have to get a cable modem separately. Still much better than using the hardware supplied by the cable company, if that's what you're wondering. I wouldn't trust their stuff as far as I could through it, to be honest. Many ISPs will even give access on a side Wi-Fi network to their other customers on your line.
Your wireless performance would depend a lot on the environment and the distance. However it's perfectly capable of saturating your 100 mb/s plan over multiple clients so I wouldn't worry about it.
It sits upright for better ventilation and effective antennae placement, and has all of the ports on the lower back of it for better cable management including USB 3.0 port placement, unlike many of the other options currently on the market, making this the best option for someone who puts it on a desk or shelf. If I wanted to wall mount it, the lack of screw hook holes on the back certainly wouldn't stop me, probably because I'm not a lazy git that can't figure anything out for himself. Best design for many people means this one is an obvious choice, and has done and continues to do quite well for itself, ASUS, and their customers. Thankfully ASUS takes more than just your preferences into consideration when designing their products.
3.0 port is broken is Asus working on fixing it? And why an 800 MHz processor when Netgear has a 1 GB Processor? Asus you're slacking on this AC1900 router. Small Net Builder is ripping this router a part.
Can someone tell me how much it improved there internet speed before and after they got this? Please tell me the statistics (mbps) not some other bullshit.
I doubt it would improve your internet speed... unless something is horribly wrong with your current router... what this would be useful for would be networking within your home... so for example... having a NAS(Network attached Storage) which is serving files to different devices over the local network.
What is the best way to position the antennas? I currently have them like this \ I / The manual says that's correct, but I'm not sure it is. Any clarification?
+Mark Rossi It depends on placement and the required coverage. Since they use linear polarized antenna, it is best to point the broadside of the antenna to your devices (or area of intended coverage). \ I / is good if you put the router on a table
I have both, the range on the night hawk is better, but for gaming I find the dsl-68u smoother for gaming and I get more consistent speeds. I've been doing tests on the two for a few months. Keep in mind that this is my preference for my internet, which I'd say is pretty quick.
Yeah, but how does it perform in crowded areas. Since 99% of the planet does not live in a subterranean bunker, and has about 15 other wifi signals in range, how is this thing going to perform?
I got one from Amazon. I had a lot of trouble getting it to work. ASUS technical support did nothing but had me restart it and my cable modem, but ultimately never solved the problem. I had so much hope for this, but am sending it back. DON'T GET THIS ROUTER!
Why would I bought this router when my internet Comcast they only give me 25mb it doesn't improve a lot for my internet. Event I had docs3 modem and this router .. But signal had no difference from my old router when I use in my room btw router in living room.. I'm not hating Asus everything look great in this router. Event how expansive it was I still purchased this product. But sadly it useless when it come to use with comcase internet haha. PS: great product #Asus

The best router, I've ever used! This thing is worth that money.
Amazing router! Also, add a pencil thin moustache and you'll have John Waters for a spokesman 😄
Love the ability to adjust the transmit power!
1:12 it pretty clearly says "LED ON OFF" not wifi on and off on the side...
If I hadn't picked up an n66u two weeks ago, this would definitely be my next router.
I was debating whether to go AC about 6 weeks ago, but decided to go with the N66U instead. I would've been pissed if I'd picked up the AC66U and then had the AC68U come out right away. Really happy with my N66U.

need more videos on QOS AND DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS SET UPS. Im a gamer and so far it has been working great for me
Awesome THANK YOU for clearing that up I was searching everywhere to figure that out.
Great new features. A MUST HAVE ROUTER. Keep up the great work
Looks good. I really need to upgrade my router and this might be the one to do the job.
Nice review Nick/ASUS North America.
Might buy it later or newer routers. :P
i orderd one. I am always happy with asus products they are just amazing
Just bought one today. User interface is easy to use. This is however a consumer products, which means that it lacks some advanced options. If you understand networking, Mikrotik is probably a better option.
This bad boy still carrying me just fine in 2023
Nice but when is the RT-AC87U coming out and what will the performance difference be?
I think ASUS needs to break into the Enterprise market more. This router (with QoS) just might start to do the trick for me.
It can be adjusted to any orientation.
Really useful video. Thanks.
I checked out its details on ASUS' site and it is indeed a WIFI switch. Seems the one presented in this video is indeed a production sample with incorrect labelling.

I was wondering why it looked so little like my router, the AC66U.. Thought this was a video about that one :P
So there are no hardware differences whatsoever? My main concern is that most DD-WRT install info refers to the U only, and no mention of the R.
So plug it in then. Supports everything you may need.

You have a setup vid?

hi, is it possible to have both dual wan (load balancing) and Ai-Protection running simultaneously on AC68? i have AC66 and it's not possible..
Is the AC socket or the output port of Asus routers the same size as the AC socket of a TP Link router or not?
hi there. would this essentially be a good solution for someone wanting to back up their data from a computer in one location to the next? IE: I could set this router up with a large-capacity external hard drive at home - and I could access that data from computers at my office?

really good video - thumbs up
Nice, someone from asus I can ask about wpa2/krack fix in latest firmware of the ac68u/r. Is it in place?
Will my wrt 54gs repeater (ddwrt) benefit? The repeater is about 50 feet away. Is this different from a 5g chip router? I have an older as us rt n16 router and I might use it for my repeater instead of my linksys
Thanks
I wanna buy this router but I have some question Has it vlan support? can you help me ?
When does it come out? I wonder if I should get the netgear r700 or the rt-ac68u. Which one is a better performer in speed and range signal?
no security against arp spoofing/poisoning :( , hope there will be an update
very useful video, thanks!
Hello , Is it Possible to upload files in to the attached usb storage from any where in the world using this router ?
But is it a repeater as well?
I have a question when I connect to my ps4 do I get both 2.4 and 5 ghz bands because I know when I try to connect with my phone it gives me the option of one of the two. Does it automatically assign both to ps4 or only one. And does this affect internet speeds.
the PS4 doesn't currently support 5GHz so you would be getting 2.4GHz speeds. 5GHz is faster and the PS4 would likely select 5GHz if it supported it.
which is better between seagate-central vs LaCie d2 Quadra USB 3.0 as an external hard drive to be connected to this router so that to get faster performance and sharing files of that drive between different devices like laptop, wifi tv,phones and pc. usb vs ethernet? seagate transfer speed is not provided in their site

hi how do i create NAS using this router. As i connect all devices via wirelessly.
Currently using the AC68U in my household, works great with a lot of coverage and speed. However, I have like one corner of the house that I need wifi in that it doesn't reach, what would be a good repeater or way to extend the wifi to the room?

i have that pce-ac68, is it safe to put the antena with magnet in the top of cpu case?????
Is a cable modem required with this or can you attached the incoming cable to this box? Thanks!
I want to use this router for gaming, but i dont see any difference with the speeds compared to my original router! Any tips?
+Maarz Zane Gaming require latency then speed
Is there a repeater mode?
can i use it as access point?
I need something for easy port forwarding, I want to do some IP Cameras at home and want access to it from my office and mobile devices???
The side switch might turn off the front LEDs.
i have the same question, i went to bestbuy today i just found the rtac68u looks the same all, we need help
I have a 100 mb/s plan, 12 wireless clients, and one wired client. Will this deliver the 100 mb/s speed wirelessly on 802.11n and 802.11ac?
Your wireless performance would depend a lot on the environment and the distance. However it's perfectly capable of saturating your 100 mb/s plan over multiple clients so I wouldn't worry about it.
Matt O'Dell Thanks, Matt!
What is the difference between an RT-AC68U and an RT-AC68R?
It says LED on/off on both the side button and the back button. Which does what?
The button on the sides say Wi-fi on/off. The unit he has is probably a pre-release unit.
What's the difference between the RT-AC68U and the RT-AC68R?
The bitches are more dtf
is there a hard drive that u can connect that can wake up!!!
from what i've read, the only difference is that the R one is sold by best buy
Can this router replace the stock ISP router?
Its not a modem and should be able to be configure for both cable and dsl. Do your research and read the spec sheet @ asus dot com.
Does anyone know if this has a client limit or not?
What is the db of the antennas?
ASUS RT-AC68U or NETGEAR Nighthawk R7000?
I can't believe asus left out wall mounting option on this router. Its a no buy just because of that.
It sits upright for better ventilation and effective antennae placement, and has all of the ports on the lower back of it for better cable management including USB 3.0 port placement, unlike many of the other options currently on the market, making this the best option for someone who puts it on a desk or shelf. Please build an Wlan Ac repeater!
about a video showing real speed tests using a home server that can do over 200MB/s
Nice review. I'd recommend washing your hands before handling the product so you don't leave fingerprints. Don't say "elegant like", sell that baby.
3.0 port is broken is Asus working on fixing it? And why an 800 MHz processor when Netgear has a 1 GB Processor? Asus you're slacking on this AC1900 router. Small Net Builder is ripping this router a part.

It's near a tv on the far side of the house.
\ I / should be the best config, but also try ||| at the furthest end of your house. That is assume your house is single floor.
timcabc It is a single floor. I'll give that a try.
Somebody make that middle antenna vertical please!
how can check lan speed test
Google “iperf”.
will it work with the ps4????
Whats yhe newset one this is 5 years old
IPTV able?
Which one is better the ac68u or the nighthawk ac1900 for a Xbox one and 360 not used at the same time
I have both, the range on the night hawk is better, but for gaming I find the dsl-68u smoother for gaming and I get more consistent speeds. I've been doing tests on the two for a few months. Keep in mind that this is my preference for my internet, which I'd say is pretty quick.
So you recommend Rt-68 for gaming ?
"This is the wifi on/off button"...
Clearly says LED on the router itself...
whats the usb 3.0 for?
In case you want to connect a hard drive for NAS.
I WOULD LIKE A NEW ASUS ROUTER I ALREADY HAVE AN ASUS COMPUTER AND ASUS MONITOR
wow, even router have dual core now.
i downloaded a file 700mb wireless to my Note 3 via a usb stick on the router took less than a min over 5G.
Yeah, but how does it perform in crowded areas. Since 99% of the planet does not live in a subterranean bunker, and has about 15 other wifi signals in range, how is this thing going to perform?
USB3 COOL
Still using it in 2023 (5Ghz doesn't work anymore)
i dont want it to stand up
не успел купить одну модель, как ASUS выпустил новую!!!
I got one from Amazon. I had a lot of trouble getting it to work. ASUS technical support did nothing but had me restart it and my cable modem, but ultimately never solved the problem. I had so much hope for this, but am sending it back.
DON'T GET THIS ROUTER!
mine should be delivered tomorrow, hopefully i have some better luck, ive heard many people having issues with this
tmobile offers this for free if your a customer
they call it their personal cell spot
just got one, paid absolutely nothing for it to use it
I got one from T-Mobile as well for free. Mly client is 3ft from the router connected on the 5ghz band at 1.3Gbps.
not worth it if you got that model i got orderd this one because my dlink dir-825 went on me after 6-7 years was a great router
Why would I bought this router when my internet Comcast they only give me 25mb it doesn't improve a lot for my internet. Event I had docs3 modem and this router .. But signal had no difference from my old router when I use in my room btw router in living room.. I'm not hating Asus everything look great in this router. PS: great product #Asus
Wow you lost some weight!
Great review but damn... Drink a glass of wáter prior to record your videos.
seems like we hearing a a cow after eating grass for hours.
Omfg since an update this router sucks like hell. Every month i have to reset this router because it close my nat. Nice done asus
OMFG FUCK OFF ASSUS I WONT BUY ANY FUCKING ASUS SHIT AGAIN.
