    I'm confused, doesn't the transfer tape cover the gaps in the vinyl? Does it only adhere to the vinyl?

      The tape surrounding the vinyl stencil just blocks the open portion of the screen where you don't want the ink to pass through. It sticks tightly enough to stay in place. Keep in mind that this is a one-shot screen that isn't meant to last more than one print run. Afterward, the tape and stencil can be removed, and the screen canbe washed out and reused.
