  • This is a video I made in 1990 to send back to my parents in the states to show them what it was like on Hahn Air Base. I set the video camera on my dash and drove from my off-base residence in Lotzbeuren to the base and drove throughout the main part of the base pointing out the different points of interest. The video starts as I'm approaching the fence line of the base on B327 and entering the Housing Gate. I hope anybody who was ever stationed at Hahn Air Base before it closed in 1993 will enjoy viewing this and for anyone since then who have only known this as Frankfurt-Hahn Airport.

Hahn was my first duty station. I was there from 1990 - 1992. It was toward the end of the bases time, and it had begun closing operations when I left. I met my husband there and we got married and are still married today. We had our first date at that base movie theater! Thanks for sharing this. Wonderful memories.

@@genemounce8302 I was there at that time, too. Late 1991 until close in Sept 1993. I was then stationed at Morbach. My wife worked at the base child care center in base housing. I was a Law Enforcement Specialist, 583d SPS. I desperately miss Walter's.

Stationed at HAB 1956-1960 and again 1979-1984. Matador missiles first tour and second tour as Base Food Service Officer. Visited wife's home town Kirchberg in 2009 for 50th wedding aniversary. Oldest "city" in the Hunsrueck. Beautiful!

Man thank you for the memories. Hahn was my first duty station fresh out of tech school and it was an amazing experience. Very hard base for an inner city kid to adjust to, but it turned out to be a life-changing experience for the best. That base helped people to grow up in a hurry! I was there from 86-89 and the cold war threat was real hence all of the exercises we were involved in. Was part of 50th CES and it was great to see my old fire truck towards the end and my old dorm as the video ended. I was only in the dorm a few months as I was allowed to move off base in Sohren.

My dad was stationed at Hahn from 91-93. I was in 5th and 6th grade at the time. One thing this video doesn't showcase were the absolutely EPIC playgrounds scattered throughout base housing. At 2:00, in between the two buildings on the left was a structure built to look like a giant pirate ship. Towards the middle of the housing area was a series of interconnecting zip lines and platforms. When we eventually moved on base, just before we left for the US, my friends and I would roam around base housing, hopping from playground to playground. There was a unique sense of unity amongst the kids at that time. The base was about to close and the internet didn't exist, so it was extraordinarily difficult to keep in touch after we were reassigned. It was kind of an unspoken fate that we all shared and it formed a strong camaraderie amongst each other. It was a really magical time for me. I think of it fondly and often. Thanks for posting the video.

Wow! This video is like going back in a time machine. I was a crew chief assigned to the 10th Fighter Sq. (Blue Zoo) from 84-88. Had a blast! Great TDY's to Zaragoza and Incirlik (The Lick). I lived down on the Mosel in a little town called Wolf next to Traben-Trarbach. Then got married to my Fraulein and moved down B-327 to Morbach. Those times will not be forgotten.

Hahn was my first assignment after tech school 80 - 82. Wow -- the stuff that was done during those 2 years was amazing. I fell in love with the AF overseas and ended up retiring only to keep staying overseas. Lots of fun! I was part of the AFCC and we ran the communications for the base. Hahn was located in the middle of German farm country but wow did we find lots of fun!

I've just came across the video that brings back memories from my childhood in the 80s/90s when we moved from a small town down the B327 behind Morbach to Kirchberg where I still live with my family today. I remember all the low flying F16s and of course all the american families living in Kirchberg. You know what? Me and my family are living in of the former US houses! Over the last decacdes they've been modernized, but at least for me this is part of my life! Thank you all guys for sharing your comments, feelings and memories!
As Rammstein and Spangdahlem airbases are Not too far away from Hahn I saw F35s for the first time in my life a few days ago and former days might become more and more real these weeks.

Hahn was my first station out of tech school too. 1986-1988. I lived in Buchenburen. Amazingly they were letting single airmen live off base because of overcrowding. Thank you for the memories. I recognized a few places. But the memory is getting foggy after so many years.

I was stationed there at this time. (WAS) was my first duty station in Germany then on to HAB when it closed. I was never bothered much by the bad and little parking at the BX. I have all fond memories of (West) Germany. My wife and I never lived in the states together. We got married in November 1989. Moved to Leideneck and here we are happily married 31 years later. Wow. Great video. Both my sons joined up this year. One Army and the other NYANG (AF) as SFS member. How fast the years go by. I was a true GLCM warrior. Not a “GAMMA GUY”. Great video. 🇺🇸😎👍. Jeff Blovat. I was there 75-77. and loved every minute of it.I was the fortunate airman who spoke German and looked it. Toured Europe in my 57 VW Transporter that had a camper shell that I shipped over after driving it from George AFB to Dover to be shipped. Spent my time seeing Europe and visiting relatives while others just sat in the barracks and bought stereos. What a waste of time to not discover where you are

The university occupies about half of the housing area and we are always wondering what the airbase looked like back in the day. The unused part of the housing area is pretty run down but fun to explore. We call that part chernobyl and have to drive through it to reach our main gate.

For the first year, I lived in Briedel, then Kappel before getting a unit in the off base housing in Rhaunen. 2184CS/2184ISS/50OSS. I hated being taken out of AFCC, because that made us have to give priority to the birds when they decided the weather was clear enough for them to fly instead of First Come, First Served, as we had been doing since ATC began. GREAT VID!!!

I was stationed at Hahn 83-85 (Blue Zoo and Victor), also 90-91 (pukin' puppies). I also remember the bowling alley burning down. They halted all flying because the fire department coundn't support crash recovery and the bowling alley fire. The original bowling alley by the BX also caught on fire twice eventually burning down with the second fire (sometime in the late eighties). Seems Hahn had a problem with bowling alleys.

Was stationed there as a fireman, 1985-1987. We didn't do well as a fire department when the bowling alley caught fire. I say that as a county firefighter in Southern California. However, we were excellent at crash fire rescue when it came to in-flight or ground emergency regarding the F-16's. Great times and terrible weather.

We came back in 1984-1988 and lived in Rhaunen, we left while I was in the 9th grade. I next stopped at Hahn in 2011 on a refueling stop on my way back from a tour in Afghanistan. I was a Master Sergeant in the Army and about to retire. We disinbarked the plane and hung out in what I remember as the MWR building when the base was open. I could almost see what was once the BX. Next door was a Barracks I think and it was run down with a tree growing inside with branches breaking through the window. I could clearly see the communications tower. My dad used to work in Supply near that tower. I had very fond memories growing up at Hahn.

I was there from 89-91 in the 496th. I remember when the bowling alley burned down. My crew and I were standing outside of the HAS right behind it. We were closer than most of the firefighters. Remember the Burger King wagon out front of the BX?

I left in 86 - just four years before - and I don't even recognize half the stuff in this video. There was no guard or gate going into base housing, there were zero buildings on the right side headed into base except the small O-Club, there was no gate where the guy went in (the main gate was another 1/2 mile ahead), there was like 1/3 the cars you see here, all the dorms and buildings were redone, plus a bunch of new ones .... four years and a completely different place.

I was there in 1978 to 1980. One of the few women there. Lived in the dorm above the post office. I do remember the bombing at the o club. The club was located just off base. In ten years this base has changed a lot.

I lived in Lotzbeuren right outside the housing gate. I could see Starkenburg off in the distance looking outside my dinning room window to the north west. Starkenburg provided a beautiful view of the Mosel valley below.

jtg1961, Thanks for posting these videos! You had big brass ones for taping on base! My hat's off to you! I lived at Hahn from 1987 until 1991. My dad, MSGT Pat Wilson, worked at the 2184th Comm Squad! Perhaps you knew him? Such flash backs seeing these videos!

I was in the 2184th from 1989 until Air Force Communications Command was dissolved in 1992. Then we became the 583rd Comm Sq. What career field was your father in?

I dont know what his career field was. I know he was with the comm squad. As far as I know he was in radio maintenance, but not sure... We were there Oct 1987 until Nov 1990.

This footage is very interesting to watch. I am a local German living only 45 minutes away from it in Bad Kreuznach Area and i flew a few times from that airport wich is now a Low Cost Carrier Base ;(. Sadly the only thing still active there is the Burger King haha. However the Airport is now in very problematic circumstances because the Federal States Goverment messed it up to find a new investor from China and now the future of the Airport is written in the stars :D.

+Jose Vee I bought a Sony Video 8mm video camera at the Hahn BX in 1989. They were quite expensive for the day $999. I placed the video camera on my dash.

I was stationed at a small NATO base AFCENT in Brunssum, the Netherlands US Army in transportation driving a 1967 Chevy US Army car and we stop next to a F 4 fighter jet I ran next to the jet and my buddy took a picture of me. Bet you can't do that now. I was on the Hahn Air force once. That was in 1969. We got to drive all over Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. It was more like a civilian base. The best time of my life.

05:55 - WHY did you have to put a huge white band across the screen, that's right where I would have seen my old barracks on the left. What a major disappointment. Thank you for posting though. I swear to you - it literally seems like yesterday - 1981-85.

Great video! I was at Hahn from 2/80-2/82. Lived in Barracks 310 then Sohren. What was the reason for the white blocking at certain points in the video? It didn't seem like you were shooting anything of a secure nature when the white blocks showed up. Just curious. thanks for sharing the video.
