In this free video guitar lesson you will learn how to play "Every Breaeth You Take" by the Police in it's entirety.
Besides being a HUGE smash hit, it also uses mostly add 9 chord voicings on the guitar which helps the song get it's haunting and open sound.
If you follow the fingerings I use in the video you will see how Andy Summers manages those difficult add 9 streches by the movement of his index finger in the middle of the picking pattern.
This "Every Breath You Take" guitar lesson will give you a great chord workout and in addition is a good study in controlling string dynamics with palm muting.
Hope you guys enjoy this one! Cheers! Carl..
More like Every Stretch You Make
haha, well put
Awesome channel u got there. Help me tons as I'm in a cover band and need to learn new songs fast. Always turn up here.

Perfect timing I see this.
If anyone's still having trouble with this, I don't blame you, this shit's pretty difficult. However, one trick I've really found that helps is to relax my fingers. Instead of tensing, where I get the dreaded "pinky pop", I started just making the shape in the air, and then slowly pressing on the strings until I get notes, making sure to keep my fingers arched. That way, I've found it much easier to play. Then I just practice relaxing but still moving fast enough to hit the shapes. Hope this helps someone.
This actually really helped me thanks
Play it in G!
Jesse Chisholm I came back to this after learning crazy train. Helps the pinky a lot.
It actually helped me too, thanks!
Hold your guitar like a classical guitar, then your wrist will be in the proper position and not induce damn carpal tunnel, don’t always have to play like that but certain songs it helps, look up Andrea Segovia
No exagerration, but as far as I am concerned, you are one of the BEST teachers on RUclips. I've been watching your videos for years. I don't even know how many years, because it's been so long. Thank you sir.
i guess i am a begginer... i been watching it and i can't play it.. but i won't give up... will be back. thanks.
so did you make it?
No he isn't, sadly.
its so simple i have really short fingers still i can play u can too
Led Nirvana um... you can’t play this comfortably with short fingers. The chords are simple, playing them sure as hell isn’t.
Its possible, you dont have to keep your fingers at the same place all the time, move your hand if you cant reach that index and pinky fret
I‘ve always wanted to learn how to play the guitar, but the beginning seems so slow and frustrating
this song is probably not a good song to start with since it makes you want to rip off your fingers, you should try play eruption by van halen it's a good beginner song, you will be totally motivated to continue playing guitar. None of that smoke on the water shit

You need to take some lessons and build up strength and your ear playing simple songs first. Then learn pop songs. And skip trying to learn from the tab. Good lessons can be had cheap from Fender/play.
This song on the album is actually tuned 1/4 step down, not 1/2 half step. That's why live they always play in standard tuning. Awesome lesson!
***** its a quarter step down. That's half a semitone. Its lower than E but higher than E flat
***** well if you tune your guitar to e standard and play along it is out of tune. If you play in E flat it is out of tune. It is halfway in between. it is only 1/4 step down. in other words A is not tuned to 440. A lot of songs do this. Sometimes it is intentional and sometimes it is a result of recording equipment. Pantera's I'm Broken is D Standard plus 1/4 step down, and Seek and Destroy by Metallica is actually slightly higher than E standard. For Every Breath you take you can make the A=452.89hx on your tuner and then tune E flat. This should get you in tune with the album recording.
Good info never thought of tuning only a quarter note down, thanks
@@emailchrismoll yep.. Covered it in a band years ago and all scratched our heads when we tried to play along with the track until we worked it out.
Hey thanks a bunch for the kind comment! I hope you continue to watch because I have a lot more on the way! :) Cheers! Carl..

Found a great guitar hack for this song, tune your D string a step up to an E. the song became WAY easier for me! I also love the channel, keep up the great content!
Coming at this from a pianist’s perspective, I really appreciate the way you describe the chord shapes then add the extended notes.
Very helpful presentation.
fuck my hand is burning.
It feels better when it hurts less.
Congratulations ! This is the best Guitar lesson of RUclips about "Every Breath You Take"... This lesson is very complete ! Thank's very much !!! :D
Thanks for all of the awesome videos Carl!
Relatively easy to play if you can do the stretching. But try inventing it. This is why Andy Summers has for all time left his mark on popular music and riff making.
Awesome!! It's pretty easy for a mediocre guitar player such as myself,
but fun and a great song by a great band!! Thanks for the clear and painless tutorial!!
1 million subs..Super deserved. Great teacher!! Greetings from Spain
This is a very good and clearly shown sets of instructions ... its the clear camera angles which make all the difference - so as to clearly see what you're actually doing ... thank you ;-)
Wow- great lesson here. I've got cramps in my wrist because of you-LOL. Seriously, a good exercise to stretch and apply those chords to other songs where appropriate. Thank You!
You deserve 100's of 1000's of views. You have world class lessons here!!
Simplify! Tune your D string to an E. You can play (pick) almost straight chords thru. A-F#m, etc, no fancy finger work needed. For the bridge play an F7 to G7, with this tuning it will be a major chord. Try it :-)
Fantastic!!!!! Awesome,,,,, perfect lesson....
I am 13 and I have been playing for a year and half, it took me nearly 2 months until I could nail this song perfectly.
Great job! I couldn't stretch my fingers that far when I was 13 so you have an excellent advantage! Keep rocking!!
I've been trying to figure out how to play this chord for sometime now, then i came across this video, i can practice with this, thank you 👍👍
i don't read music, i learn to play by hear, but I'll get to it soon. .. so this will help me..
Hey! Great video! Recently I rediscovered The Police and thought it would be interesting to play a few songs... This video is clear and really helped me understand what's going on!
Thanx!!!
Thanks , this was really helpful .
Very informative video, thanks a lot!
Thanks for the great tutorial! I always thought it had a "haunting" quality to it thanks to the add 9 chords. Thanks again. Excellent job!
awesome, thanks!
Best teacher ❤
Excellent!
great lessons
Great lesson!...I now know I need loads of practice in palm muting..and stretching left hand!!
thank you! saved my gig :)
You are an incredible badass and I thank you.
Grandissimo carletto!
Awesome!
Thank you
Excellent
This is another great lesson - thanks Carl! When I first tried it I almost gave up because it looked too difficult. But if I put a capo on the second fret the F#add9 can be played very easily, with just two fingers. This has the added advantage of lowering the action on the guitar to make the other stretch chords easier to play, and giving your hand a periodic break from the stretching. Since the F major shape that Carl uses can't be played if a capo is on the second fret, I play the F and the G using the "A shape" higher up the fretboard.
you can do a normal A shape miss out the G then this maybe awkward but I do middle finger E on 2nd fret, pinky finger on A string on 4th fret then with the index finger play G string on 1st then 2nd to sharpen it then back down for the rest of that arpeggio shape then play the the D chord with the E string open then a power chord D string second fret G string 4th fret then fret the E string on 2nd fret the Open E then open B works for me when a capo isnt about and you get less straining stretches in.
One of my favorite songs. Thanks for posting. The stretching too hard for me .. especially the F# w/ index finger barred on 2nd fret (3:45) so I'm learning using single notes w/o the bars. It takes some doing, but the medium tempo makes it possible. Also helps to build fret movement speed.
His hand is too beautiful.
Hear me out, when I first started playing it seemed impossible cause I have short fingers, but after doing finger stretching and scales I finally can play it
so easy thanks
i just started this guitar & i want this song to be my first.
the finger split is killing me.............
This isn't the greatest song for a beginner
This is not a song for beginners, I recommend you choose another one.
It's for your own good. Splitting your fingers so much isn't good if you have close to no experience at all, better to come back to it once you've tried more songs :)
if u really want this song to be your first, go learn lets play guitars version its very easier compared to this
Ryota Ushikoshi been 2 years since that comment, hoping you've done a great improvement
Well yeah I also wanted to play that part but im also not good at finger splitting I play it with capo 1st fret and do basic chords
Muito bom, gostei é vou praticar!👍
omg my fingers ...if this song doesn't help with finger dexterity then there is a god....goodness. Good job with the tutorial!
Thanks
You NEED more views!
Just great. Thanks for this lesson.
Heard this at the end of Stranger Things season 2. Finally decided to learn it lol
Terima kasih atas pelajaran nya
Funny! I literally just watched Andy's interview on RickBeato2, and he says he has no idea why Sting insisted on it being in E flat! They all hated each other, at that stage!
My hands got very flexible after the tornado of souls solo tutorial I didn’t realize how far I could stretch my fingers and I have small hands
hello Carl Brow okay? I hope so! I live in Brazil and I have seen your videos and have learned a lot from them and would like to congratulate him for his work and enjoy to suggest that if possible you make available the name of the effects that are used in the songs that you teach in their videos so we can have a reference ... the more you are of congratulations and may God continue to bless you a big hug
I know that is the main lick, but at the end there is a guitar layered over the main lick that sounds like the extra chorus vocals saying
Every Breath You Take
Every Move You Make
Every Bond You Break
Every Step You Take
That's when I notice it, but If anyone can tab it out for me thank you.
really great lesson,i've wanted to try this for a long time but like many others this is pretty tough to play, its my wrist thats struggling !! maybe my position is wrong when i hold the guitar, but still enjoying it and longer fingers would be good, where can i buy some !! cheers
Every wrist I ache
Every every nerve I break
Every piss they take
Every bum note I make
I’ll be blaming Andrew (Summers).
Hi from indonesia, thank you for nice tutorial, This is another version I've ever learned and I think it's more difficult than playing G key... but surely your version looks cool. Unfortunately my fingers are shorter than yours.
Ehat kind of guitar are you using and what kind of pickups are in it, the sound is beautiful! I would like to look into them. Thank you for the lesson, you are an amazing player!
Carl please make a lesson for temple of the king chorus!
Tune your guitar to open E and bar the 5th 2nd 7th and then 9th fret boom no stretching and it sounds good
Alternate tuning could be a solution to these stretch but its a pretty good stretch pratice in standard!
very easy riff ..thanks carl for the lesson..keep up the good thing!!!!!!
great tutorial as usual! you must done another john mayer song! perhaps daughters or no such thing or your body is a wonderland thaat would be awesome
Just wondering if you have any tips for palm muting. I'm fine with stretching the fingers, and the picking pattern, but the moment i try to palm mute, i think i apply too much pressure, and so the strings become too muted. Do you have any tips for stopping this, and how i can improve my technique in general?
This is a tuff one because of the stretch. Awesome sounding riff.
I’m only just getting comfortable moving around on message in a bottle. Which I think is easier than this track.
This is the most painful song I've ever tried to play- do not ever, ever obligate yourself to playing this song. This is one of those songs we play only when everyone in the band is feeling at their best, and before we do anything else- so your forearm isn't already half worn out. The burn is real ppl- and it hits me before I even get to the first chorus- by the time the song is over my left forearm is cramping and burning like wildfire. I am 52 though- and I have arthritis pretty badly- maybe it's not so tough for everyone else, Idk. Besides- we have a female singer- she has trouble with covering Police songs. Sting can sing like a mf'er- almost as well as he writes. The thing is- it doesn't sound that difficult- he's not showing out in the traditional sense- but try singing one of his songs. He has amazing color in his tone- unbelievable inflection- and a real sincerity that you just can't capture or mimic. He uses his voice like a literal instrument playing a counter melody to whatever the band is doing. And this is very intentional- he's creating harmonies that really color the song and place you inside the space he's creating within. He's an artist and a musical genius- in the true sense of the word. He could've been a classical composure if he wanted to, imo- and I think would've been a really good one.
The studio version is not even tuned down, it actually doesn't reach the Ab fully. Sting recorded the demo of the song singing with a Hammond organ which was off tune. They worked from that and tuned the other instruments to the organ.
Carl is a tank!!
Before I teach this song to my students, I have them listen to it and ask them if this sounds easy or hard. They say easy and then I laugh. Mwahahahahaha!
took me about a week but I finally got it
how do you pick the strings without making the tone echo??like how do you make the sound shorter? if I put my palm right above the strings, it doesn’t make a sound, and if I don’t put my palm in the strings, they just produce a long sound
Hey I got an issue where I find it really hard to use my pinky even though I got big hands how do I fix it
Is this even actually possible, been playing for 6 years every day and have made huge progress. Still can’t seem to get this.
What effects did you exactly use???
Ahhh, the refreshing finger stretcher
I actually don’t do the motion with the index finger pulling it on and off, I stick the first chord using first, third, pinky and middle finger, and the second chord just barring that second fret, then using middle and pinky..
Yep, it's in A-flat. I always thought Andy played it that way 'cause it works great for the chorus/break part - the chords for that are then EMaj and F#Maj which fall into place nicely with A-flat. Not to mention the fact that if you're playing along with the original recording and don't want to detune you'll need to play it in A-flat!
My advice is learn an acoustic version. Save the stretching and learn the Pantera flood solo and outro. 2 Beast 1 stone
what preset can i use in guitar rig for play this song?
you have harmonizer for this sound?
Some alternative fingering is possible - for example, you can play the A Chord at the second fret like a regular A but with your ring finger on the 4th fret on the G string, starting the arpeggio from the A string - it gives you the same notes. Also, for the D and E you can play the high note on the B string instead of having to move your pinky and getting rheumatoid arthritis. I haven't found another solution for the F#madd9, though - bugger of a stretch!
You can 2nd on low E, 4th on A, 1st and 2nd on G
Damn the stretch
Glad I aint the only one who thinks this is pretty tough to get down....lol
is It the standard accordature?
please do a guitar lesson on shot in the dark...
The F# is a killer for me sometimes I just slide my pinky a half step up to get the A note.
4:30
Ahhhhhhhh! My fingas!
I want to play this so bad, but the finger positioning is a stretch. I’m using the acoustic guitar too. I wonder if the strings are more difficult to hold down.
My fingers stretch too much when trying to play this..
and I have large hands.. (i'm 1.86 meters tall, so .. )
Why is that?
and lol, is it ok im trying to play this on a classic \ acoustic \ spanish guitar?
You guys know the solo to Pantera uses the same thing lol love it
When I first heard this song, all I could think about is the begining of the floods solo
@@definitelynotsolidsnake Yeah. Also Message In A Bottle, I think. Was quite surprised when I tried to learn that part. Not the biggest Police fan for sure, but the resemblance is striking.
@2:04
minchia non e' molto facile,,, bravissimo!!!!
7:45
How do you get that tone ?
Amp settings please, thanks
+Trainens107 Chorus or some types of reverb, or some light flanger.
Alright, thanks :)
It's a simple thing he's playing through Roland Jazz Chorus amp!
CE-1 Boss. A most lush chorus sound.
Connect the guitar to the amp using a ripe banana. Turn the gain down, but turn the green dial up to 11. Then put an empty beer can on top of the amp to really capture that reveb.
