Although I’ll admit that 10,000 BC is one of my guilty pleasures and just as accurate as Apocolypto lol.
Unknown Unknown I’m saying this movie is combining the Aztec and Maya. So no, Mayans did not sacrifice on their pyramids, that was the Aztecs. Saying they’re the same or similar is totally inaccurate. They were 2 separate time periods. Funniest part is the smallpox and Spanish arrival lol. Spain wasn’t even a country at this time period, they were Muslim 😂. Allahu Akbar

Jaguar Paws instincts are what makes him such a great leader. He was the first one to sense other people in the forest and also the first one to go after the ravaged tribe to ask more questions. He knew whatever ravaged that tribe could possibly ravage his.
Right. I think had the father not stopped Jaguar from asking further and not downplaying his curiosity as fear/sickness, their village probably would have been better prepared or even have relocated altogether.
@@_Mayibongwe They probably wouldn't have moved, Flint Sky was the leader, the type of old leader that didn't believe in fear and his peace being tainted, he would've refused to move as that would've been a giving in to fear, for some it may seem like a coward move but he believed in standing his ground and that if it was his time to die, he would die.
@@_Mayibongwe That is certainly a valid argument. Flint Sky's dismissal of Jaguar Paw's curiosity as fear or sickness could be seen as a missed opportunity to gather important information about the threat facing their village. Advice we can take ourselves. Live your life with joy. Don't fear terrorists or disease or financial collapse. If the majority live in fear we will create fearful situations in our reality.
Fantastic how he relates with eye contact. All he has to do is suggest with his eyes, and they know instantly what he means. Thats definitely how humans used to converse. In some of the kalahari tribes they still do this, and also use clicks to communicate. Its magical to see and hear them. If you get the Apocolypto dvd, the commentary is definitely worth watching. Most of the actors didnt understand a word of what was aked of them. Mel Gibson shows his genius in directing them. well worth watching
I’m Mexican & down there ppl still use their eyes as a silent way to communicate but it’s only simple things. That “get out” eye movement flint sky did is one of them!
A film about brown guys speaking a foreign language. Sounds like something that 99% of Hollywood executives would hate. Also, a superb, riveting movie. Hollywood's hatred of the director very conveniently masks Hollywood's fear of having more movies like this succeed.
+Robert Roberts Critics gave it a 6/10 when it came out. Yet big time directors like Scorsese and Quint said it was one of the best films they seen in years. Really sad what happened to Apacolypto. Should of gotten more honors at the Oscars.

I remember watching this film thinking wtf?! How is this not the ONE movie everyone's talking about that year...Truly fascinating storytelling and assured filmmaking from Mel Gibson...
Being from Mixtec people, my father used to explain things in life to me like Flint did about fear. I was always worried and he would explain that it infects others. Hearing this for the first time I immediately thought of my father and his talks he used to give me.
What Flint Sky was trying to say is that Jaguar Paw shouldn't let fear rule over his every thought and action. NOT that he shouldn't be afraid at all. And I have to agree with that: If you let fear run your life, it'll hold you back.
I'm reading below in the comments this crap-> 'fear is good, it keeps you alive.' His point is that you cannot live with fear, you cannot let it overwhelm your thoughts and actions, it will eventually paralyze you and destroy your tribe. His point is NOT that you can't at times be fearful, not that you shouldn't let the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, this is of course inevitable. Imagine, for just a second, that you were the patriarch of this tribe. What would be the optimal image for you to portray to your people?
Fear is a feeling (i.e. an emotion), just like love, happiness, anger, jealousy, etc. Since attitudes are contagious, the elder was looking out for his people by telling his son not to _dwell_ on it. Easier said than done, I know, but positive thinking can go a long way.
Stupid old man trying to teach his son a life lesson at the wrong time. Jaguar Paw was right trying to get more info from that vague asshole, maybe they would have been able to protect themselves.
His father ultimately made a mistake and cost his village a chance of getting away from the ultimate danger that was heading their way. The son was going to ask what happened, instead he was stopped.
Top Dog The whole point of this scene is that his father knew that their way of life would be shattered if they lived in fear and his son would not gain anything from speaking to them but fear. The ultimate danger was not the Mayans but the Spaniards that come at the end.
When a film can have intense or just gripping scenes, with absolutely no music, or loud ambiance, and subtitles you have to. read the entire journey. That is amazing cinema, story telling, direction, and performance. Classic
Dude, WTF are you going on about? The comment is taken from of a South Park episode trilogy-Imagination Land (Season 10). It's super funny & actually gives Mel some respect. Try to take note of the "quotation marks" next time before you go off the deep end and get a sense of humor already.
Years after it was made we're still praising it today. If Mel could have controlled himself maybe this film would have been greatly appreciated by many. This IS a great film! A amazing film.
Except for the whole part about him mistaken the Mayans for aztecs and their customs. Mel combined both peoples together in this movie. Mayans didnt do everything in this move.
I wanna thank Mel Gibson for this great Film. His commitment to detail and desire to make it as a accurate as possible is commendable! I don't know why he decided to be part or this project but I'm glad he did. ❤
+Eduardo Arredondo This is true are history has been around longer than theres. and are remains to be told how different Mayan and Aztecs see each other some remain with there ancestoral traditions. And they have their different language passed down from generation to generation. I myself descendants from the mayans and speak Quanjobal Maya language. And continue to speak it as long as I live brother.
plus time changes things, people say if the "red" Indians came from Siberia etc across the land bridge, which they did why dont they speak some form or related form of Cyrillic script, because Cyrillic script(Russian ) wasnt even around then same with the languages of South America, time and evolution.
dfcvda Not to mention that Cyrillic isn't a language, it's a script. And it didn't come from Siberia. Why would Siberians use a hybrid of Glagolitic and Greek?
This scene is awesomely directed and acted. Many wondered some of the reactions and here is some explanation. Between tribes, there is no alliance and every tribes are sworn enemy and by just meeting each other usually result in fight and deaths and hence the intense natural respond when they met. Jaguar's father speech is to prevent unneccesary killings and convince them to leave. When they found out their land is ravage, the other tribe didnt reveal the details becos he is hoping Jaguar's tribe also suffer the same since they are also enemy. Jaguar's father didnt pester on to know the details as he assumed its another another tribe and no point knowing the details and taking the warning is enough. Also further talk might result in arguement and explode into fight and deaths.
Well not exactly I been dealing with a lot of anxiety so this part of the movie was very deep and inspiring and hope that it could lift my soul to strike this anxiety from my heart....
In 2000 I went in Palenque ( Mexico) by the jungle near the maya ruins... I saw the jaguar temple in the jungle as well as the scarifications Pyramids !!! I was amazed by the organisations of the Maya's they really were ahead in time!!! One of the best experience I've ever had!!! The icing on the cake was while I was wandering in the ruins I was off my face on mushrooms!!!!!
the only sacrifices were done by the Spaniard to the Mexicas, there's no puramids they're temples, and they were not Mayan they were Mexica .. learn something
Awesome movie. Mel Gibson went through a rough patch with his personal life and this movie went ignored. Even if this is fiction it portrays tribes instinct to survive, form alliances, and to avoid annihilation.
Mel is a gifted film maker. This particular movie worked on several different levels but this never alienated the viewer from the core story of the family. The main protagonist's storyline was brilliantly written and directed but it must have been a nightmare to film all this on location. Real John Huston-style raw film-making. Love it!
Quite the opposite....this man does not fear "fear". He objectively realizes it is a sickness which man creates for himself by engaging it. He doesn't respect it, has no need for it, and instructs his son to strike it from his heart.

Your Excellency I wouldn't say it is necessarily fear, but an acute sense of danger in the present moment, which heightens the present moment. I think fear is essentially the projection into the future that clouds the vision. If a man go into a fight and 1 is overcome by fear, the other is perhaps more clear-headed by default.
Flint Sky was a very wise & honorable man! He died like a "man",with honor and integrity! My father had his battles in his lifetime and sought answers . Some he discovered in time and some never revealed to him on his journey, but he fought the good fight and I loved and respected him for it. No man has ever had all the answers or were prepared for everything life threw at them, but men stand up and battle through it as best they can and in doing so they are observed by others and their struggle is noted in the hearts and minds of those not blinded by self-righteousness.

Advice we can take ourselves. Live your life with joy. Don't fear terrorists or disease or financial collapse. If the majority live in fear we will create fearful situations in our reality.
+Eugene Chee Extremely relevant today
that's how the great depression was created
That's why i don't watch mainstream media and social media. They get people paranoid
Relevant to us all in these strange times
Too late buddy
The way he turns around, you can almost see the fear run up his spine. Truly breathtaking scene.
+Shatamx lost 4 point because there is no jew actor.
GG
funny thing is this foreign language is not so foreign if you live in south America, Maya, aztecs had different languages
312vandal thank you
Nice dog whistle.
I always come back to this movie. It never gets old. Truly his best work.
This is honestly the best movie ever made!!!
This and there will be blood!
I convinced my then late-highschool girlfriend and her parents to go see this movie, instead of some comedy-stricken date-flick that was airing. I think I was the only one who truly appreciated the movie.

Gibson is a racist. Plain and simple. He is far from being a genius lol

Say whatever you want about Mel Gibson; he can direct one heck of a movie
Nah, he's a racist.
This film is a masterpiece.
This movie is a rare gem.
This film was incredible! Talk about a unique look into Mayan culture!!
A great film that didn't get the respect it deserved because Mel got drunk and acted nutters.

Imho, Mel is a genius.
Btw, my bro was an extra here, and his mother is also shown a couple of times in the movie.
Im proud to say this movie was recorded in my beautiful state of Veracruz, México.
I remember watching this film thinking wtf?! How is this not the ONE movie everyone's talking about that year...Truly fascinating storytelling and assured filmmaking from Mel Gibson...

My fav scene from the movie . That theme that plays when the father says be still... Goosebumps

What Flint Sky was trying to say is that Jaguar Paw shouldn't let fear rule over his every thought and action. NOT that he shouldn't be afraid at all. And I have to agree with that: If you let fear run your life, it'll hold you back.
“I did not raise you to see you live with fear”. -Flint Sky
That old man has a point about fear, more or less.
Exactly correct. Useful ideas come from that peaceful place inside. Ignore all the stupid comments; this is a wonderful bit of movie-making.
you need to cut out the bongs

The ultimate danger was not the Mayans but the Spaniards that come at the end.
kodiackcota dang that’s deep
Not sure it would have helped cause the guy who said their lands were ravaged was also one of the captives.
@@V.E.R.O. and it's not like he knew they were going from place to place ravaging.
The village would have been fucked anyway though and jaguar paw would not have been given this lesson which saves him later in the movie
When a film can have intense or just gripping scenes, with absolutely no music, or loud ambiance, and subtitles you have to. read the entire journey. That is amazing cinema, story telling, direction, and performance. Classic
well the absence of music is a technique to build tension. So no music kind of helps. Sorry..
Whenever anxiety and fear come to visit I play this scene.
The dad went out like a G

Such a deepful meaning in this scene. Fear is sickness when is inside of us, it can be a limit and we must go beyond it.
"Say what you want about Mel Gibson, but the son of a bitch knows story structure."

South Park-Imagination Land trilogy
impressive movie he made - and directed?
Just because he was blackmailed by his crazy wifes does not make him a son of a bitch. He is a great actor and producer and will always be.
Dude, WTF are you going on about? The comment is taken from of a South Park episode trilogy-Imagination Land (Season 10). It's super funny & actually gives Mel some respect. Try to take note of the "quotation marks" next time before you go off the deep end and get a sense of humor already.
He also knows how to call a female cop "Sugar Tits" at the most inappropriate point in time possible.
Lol, yep and don't forget the anti-semitism in the back of the cruiser!!!
Years after it was made we're still praising it today. If Mel could have controlled himself maybe this film would have been greatly appreciated by many. This IS a great film! A amazing film.
This movie is a testament to the genius of Mel Gibson who is undoubtedly one of the greatest movie directors and actors in the world!!!
Except for the whole part about him mistaken the Mayans for aztecs and their customs. Mel combined both peoples together in this movie. Mayans didnt do everything in this move.
Very few people realize how great this picture is.
I wanna thank Mel Gibson for this great Film. His commitment to detail and desire to make it as a accurate as possible is commendable! I don't know why he decided to be part or this project but I'm glad he did. ❤
Mel Gibson has got to make more movies.
I agree but he's blacklisted in Hollywood

This is true are history has been around longer than theres. and are remains to be told how different Mayan and Aztecs see each other some remain with there ancestoral traditions. And they have their different language passed down from generation to generation. I myself descendants from the mayans and speak Quanjobal Maya language. And continue to speak it as long as I live brother.

plus time changes things, people say if the "red" Indians came from Siberia etc across the land bridge, which they did why dont they speak some form or related form of Cyrillic script, because Cyrillic script(Russian ) wasnt even around then same with the languages of South America, time and evolution.
dfcvda
Not to mention that Cyrillic isn't a language, it's a script. And it didn't come from Siberia. Why would Siberians use a hybrid of Glagolitic and Greek?
I can't enough of this movie, brilliant
this deserves to be in hd, what a magnificent film
I’ve noticed that Mel Gibson is really good at creating strong male role model type characters (for instance, the father in Braveheart).

Best movie ever.
Sometimes when fear seems to be having the best of me I come back to this clip
This lesson needs to be taught to much of the WORLD, and today!

The best Movie ever.

My God. I haven't seen this since I became half paralyzed. Yes, one must let fear move on. Be still, as fear appears, and moves on.
This movie is amazing and this is the best scene in this film, hands down. The audio is spectacular.
Mel is a gifted film maker. This particular movie worked on several different levels but this never alienated the viewer from the core story of the family. The main protagonist's storyline was brilliantly written and directed but it must have been a nightmare to film all this on location. Real John Huston-style raw film-making. Love it!
Can people in 2021 watch this video plz Jesus
dont fear anything but fear itself
Quite the opposite....this man does not fear "fear". He objectively realizes it is a sickness which man creates for himself by engaging it. He doesn't respect it, has no need for it, and instructs his son to strike it from his heart.
Why fear anything? We are nothing but polygons & fractals everlasting throughout time within the infinities of structure & mathematics.
Birth
Spheres and ellipses, sounding of planets
Earth and light code to you
Hymns sense and rhymes
Forces unite
Human and foe
Combining every soul
We do collide
Separated, we bind
We are one in a whole
Set forth within a chart
Birthed within time, we are infinite
Seeking the sun’s sheltered rainbow
The smell of woman and roses
Good wine and play
We are human now
Shallow thoughts of war
With strategic ways
Generals and all
Sending angels to fight
Number tags and all
Freshly shaved and ready to fight
I am human now
Taking from all
Traversing time
I am human now
Blinded by riches
The industry that succumbs
We are but repetition in thought
History spoken and taught
Human now, without thought.

Roninrounder Fear is pretty useful if you want to run away fast. It heightens all the andrenaline levels and all.
