      It's amazing how different Cara Gee looks when she's in full makeup. The wild full black eye shadow and her using a much lower vocal register completely transforms her into Drummer with almost no thought that's an actress playing her.

    The call back to Alien and "working class folks in space" was really relevant for this episode. Two different crews making repairs to ships. A medic taking charge of a field situation to do an emergency amputation. The X-Ray has Peaches on overnight watch, doing maintenance tasks. Part of the impact of Alien, and of the Expanse, comes from the believable characters, and a big part of what makes them believable is that they have jobs and spend time (not too much time) on screen working. They aren't just puppets of the plot, and they aren't all princes and billionaires.

    This aftershow is so engaging and truly informative. Many thinks to Ty and Wes for sharing both sides of themselves - the professional and their personalities that mesh so well. Also, I'm grateful to Dan whose enthusiasm for the storylines and involvement with the rest of the writers, producers, etc. seems to have driven a great deal of what has been excellent in The Expanse. I'm already planning my black outfits and mourning veils for the end. Sniffle.

    "Space is merciless" is a big part of why I like this series. I'd love to see shows doing this more often; I crave a space version of "To Build A Fire" and Naomi on the Chetsumoko is as close as I've seen.

  • @neilog747
    @neilog747 2 года назад +12

    I hope Philip gets what he deserves. He is an utter bell-end. The actor portraying him does a great job of making him unlikeable>vulnerable>unlikeable. The acting and sophisticated takes on adult psychology in this show are getting better and better. Dominique Tipper's acting keeps going from strength to strength. The show demonstrates that if you give them room, good actors will grow into their characters.

    Idk if y'all will see this, but:
    I'm interested in whether it was a conscious change to the Amos & Holden scene to have Holden not tell Amos the truth about why he deactivated the missile. Unless I'm misremembering, Amos confronts Holden similarly in the book but Holden straight up tells him that it was because Naomi's son was on the ship and that he couldn't bring himself to kill him. Amos understands why Holden would do it but is still like "I can just lock you out of the controls next time so you don't have to carry that burden, because I WILL take and make the shot next time" or something to that affect.
    I liked both scenes, but I feel like the book one was stronger because Holden knew Amos well and didn't want to lie to him. He also knew that he couldn't afford to do that again, so having Amos down to do it seemed to comfort him some.
    I get that Jim would want to tell Naomi of all people first, but I feel like he shouldn't have kept the truth from Amos!

    I have similar taste in Sci-fi to Nowak. The Expanse is my second favorite fictional universe, just behind BattleTech, because it's so grounded. BattleTech barely beats it because it has NO aliens. Instead, they use the clan invasion to act as the scary/mysterious/and grounded external threat. The Expanse keeps the aliens off screen, which is almost as good.
    Sci-fi is cool window dressing, but the really interesting bits in both are the human struggles--Inner Sphere/Sol system politics & the human heart in conflict with itself. I'm looking at you Filip & Holden...
    PS
    ...and Naomi too.

They are really trying to give the white in Marco's gray to the love for his son, but I don't really see that; he's a serious narcissist, there's no room for empathy or love for anyone besides his insecure empty self. The portals were built to work forever - since they have lasted for millions if not billions of years. Since each portal was being created by local resources at no cost to the builders (their cost was in creating the proto-molecule) they went so big there could never be a portal that was too small. It was the solar systems being linked that paid the cost of creating the portals in terms of materials and energy. IF the portals all had to be the same size (SWAG), they decided to err on the large side. The idea that they would unleash those proto-molecules without consideration of the havoc they could cause on the other end (e.g. the earth solar system) including to sentient life shows the creators were not necessarily benevolent. They were creating an interstellar empire for themselves and, "locals be damned", they were creating an interstellar empire. This included enslaving and mutating local forms of life to their purpose. The British among others were equally ruthless in how they treated less advanced people they added to their empire. A more apt analogy could be local people in medieval Europe finding a roman road or viaduct - and wondering why they went to such extremes to make those roads/viaducts last - not realizing their purpose was to move troops and freight (or water) over long distances over centuries - something the locals could nor imagine.

      @@MTerrance Err on the large side, since you can get it at the same price anyway.

    I don't believe Marco is a bad character. Allow me to explain. The person who rises from the ashes and tames a dream into being must necessarily have an edge of Narcissisms to them. He is doing exactly the opposite of what he was taught to do as a child. He goes against the narrative "known to society" that creates a "Belter," that is, someone who hates the Inners and Martians, but none-the-less, accepts their place and hopes for a limited success -- which in belter terms -- means living a slightly more comfortable life than his peers before dying. He would never be accepted as a Martian due to their citizenship rules and culture, nor could he afford to go back to Earth. Indeed, he accepts his identity as a Belter and see's his class as his home. Marco (simply put) is an idealist, with great confidence, abilities and ambition which pours into the Charisma that make people want to follow him. He remains mission-orientated. I don't see him as a psychopath or sociopath that perhaps someone may assume he is at a cursory glance. In Nietzschean terms, he simply has a Will to Power and follows Master Morality. Yes, he will sacrifice everyone around him in order to achieve his goals, but that is the leader who is needed for such a revolution. If he did not have those traits, if he allowed himself to be gripped by pre-logical emotion, or bounded by common morality than he would never have achieved the position that he has and this revolution would never have happened. I believe he does "Love" his son, and his team which is why they are loyal to him. His leadership style is to build a "cult of personality" which is why he can't be undermined by his son or anyone else in public, which is why he reacts so irately. This is why the character is written well, he is that One in a Billion chance of character traits that all perfectly come together to make him who he is. And quite frankly, even if he is killed, he will already have been successful because he brought the Inners and Martians together to see the danger of the Belts continual neglect and will force them to change. Indeed, even if he loses, the Belters will still win and all of his sacrafices will benefit 5 generations from that point who will likely thank him. Also as a side note - Hurling asteroids towards Earth likely means nothing to him other than seeing his plan succeed and his enemies suffer, we can't forget that he does not identify "Earth" or "Earthers" as being like himself, in the same way that the Allies did not see the Japanese as human. It is necessary to dehumanize your enemies so you can carry out strategy.

      @@mikaelbrresen983 You're very welcome! I will miss The Expanse. I'll be 68 years old in February. It's one of the very best shows I've ever had the pleasure to watch. The characters - so human, so perfect and flawed at the same time. I will miss them. I'll miss the fearsome beauty of space. The Expanse reveals how it can be done. The right story, the right actors, writers, artists of all kinds. What else can I say?

    As if the budget of a show is even noticiable to a multibillionaire. But you know, if he was like acutally I'm using all my money to mitigate climate change, I can't give this show the full season it needs, I would be like " fair" but he's still just hoarding all of our labor and revenue

    can only 6 episodes be considered a season?

      What else would you call it? The only other word I can think of that comes close is "mini-series," but that doesn't work because there have already been 5 seasons before this.

      @@swozzares the structure of a film is very different though. This does not feel like one film that was split into six pieces. It feels like six episodes, where each episode introduces new problems and resolves them while the greater season arc connects them.

    Am I the only one that finds the couch setting awkward and distracting? Ty's nervous fidgeting gives me anxiety. I wish they had filmed these sitting at a table. I know it's not that important but I needed to share.

    • @eme.261

      My legs fidget very similarly to Ty's, especially when I'm exited or hyper focused. For me, seeing Ty's legs behave as mine do is very endearing. I'm not disregarding your perspective, but I am pointing out that it's relative and there's likely less people bothered by the arrangement than you'd imagine.

    • @wavion2
      @wavion2 2 года назад +2

      Nah, you're not the only one, I completely agree. It makes it awkward for both the on-screen people and the audience; you really don't need waist-down for an interview/discussion. Moot point though, because I'm pretty sure they filmed these back-to-back. Cara Gee (Drummer) walked in at the end of the Marco episode, which made me think she was off-camera waiting to film her episode. Plus, Ty and Wes are always in the same black shirt and jeans.
