28 years ago I was a new immigrant in a tiny moshav in Israel. There were three more Russian speaking families. It was someone's birthday and we went to the only grocery shop to get vodka. The only spirit they had though was Araq. Well, we saw "40%'" and bought a bottle. We couldn't drink it though. It was a m3affan, sober birthday party! Araq with anis tasted like a medicine to us, the Soviets. Exactly like some disgusting cough medicine they forced us to drink as kids . A year or so passed a Yemeni friend invited me for a shabbat lunch. And for the first time i tried ja7nun with grated tomato and 7amin eggs and ... Araq with a cube of ice. Now the araq made sense! It's not a drink to go with borsch or plov :) Since then i love Yemeni food. God bless your hands!
ShirEats thanks! You - and your mom - made it so easy to prepare. How about some other Yemeni Jewish dishes, like Malawach, Schoug, Zelabiya, and Lchouch? Do you have any videos for these?!?! I’d love to impress my girlfriend with any or all of them! 😆
hmm, not the direction of this dish, also the dough is super thin so i think the nuts will break it pretty easily, but if this recipe takes you there, then fly ;)
My grandmother who was born in Yemen used to add honey in the cooking process. Makes the dough a bit sweet. But not too much. you still eat with tomato and schoog
Hey Moran, thank you for watching! My grandparents, as I mentioned in the video, are also from Yemen and this is what works for us :) I'm sure every family has their own tweak. I'd love to try your grandma's recipe!
This looks incredible. Gonna give it a go this week. Hugs from Kansas, USA
oh, thank you! I hope you'd like it🙏🏼
Great video Shir! I used to eat jahhnun a lot as a kid, I unfold and wrip it as well - much better for dipping!
oh thank you! i agree! always fun to run into someone that shares a way of eating 🙃
This is going on my list for Shabbat. Something to look forward to Saturday morning.
Sounds great! Did you had the chance to make it?
@@ShirEats I made the purchase of Frozen Jachnun, and put it in the oven before Shabbat with some eggs! Was delish! Def need to try from scratch. :)

@@bdtroutman Not anytime soon, sorry. For schhoug, check out Shino Eat, she has a schoug recipe that her Yemen friend taught her how to make :)
ShirEats will do! Thanks!
oh I could see adding ground nut (walnut, pecan, etc) meal along with a sprinkle of sugar before you do the first fold.

Hi One Question...add the water in a cup in the oven or add into the jachnun??
Inside the pot, the Jachnuns soak this up and it prevents them from getting dry.
@@ShirEats Thanks 😊
Do you use baking powder? If yes, how much?
I don’t
Lukewarm water

@@ShirEats try to eat the jachnun with sugar its really good
@@Max-sl8df Yes, I oil my working surface of course. What do you mean by the Jewish names of things? And why is it funny? I am Jewish, after all.
