      Roddick had to face a prime Federer, where on hard courts Roger was almost unbeatable as he was on grass from 2004 to 2007. That's four prime years that Andy had as well. There are a lot of talented players that could of won more titles, just that Roger was there. Think of Hewitt, Safin, Coria, Nalbandian, even Agassi probably could of won another title in that span, but Roger was just too good. Sometimes the timing is right, and sometimes it isn't.

      A treat to teenagers maybe. Nadal was only 18 here and thus a teenager by definition. The sole reason why Roddick won here is because Nadal was a teenager and had not yet reached his prime. After this win, Roddick never beat again Nadal at Slams. In fact, check it out the USO 2011 QF, where Nadal destroyed peak 29 years old Roddick. Nadal owns the H2H over Roddick 7-3 (70% of victories).

    I think Federer screwed up Roddick's game. This style right here is very effective against Nadal, but against Federer Roddick would lose big playing like this, so he adapted to try to beat Federer, but in the process his style was also no longer effective against Nadal.

    • @corymajor7811

      Most of their future matches were on clay ironically enough and no version of Roddick is ever going to beat Nadal on clay. Nadal also was not in his prime in this match, he wasn't even top 20 ranked, but Roddick also declined bigtime when he fired Gilbert, a huge mistake.

    • @erintoney7137
      @erintoney7137 2 года назад +1

      Not really. Rafa’s game evolved over time as well. By 2009, none of the big hitters like Roddick, Gonzalez, or Blake were beating him like they used to. He turned all of the H2Hs around. Rafa also got better at neutralizing big servers, hence why Karlovic and Isner have never beaten him.

    Roddick's serve was amazing at this time. Nadal is one of the best return of servers of all time and Roddick makes him look silly at 3:55 with a 142 mph serve down the T that Nadal doesn't even have time to react to it, to the serve at 4:17 at 152 mph were Nadal swings and misses about 60 seconds after the ball blew by him.

    • @steeltrap3800
      @steeltrap3800 4 года назад

      Roger and particularly Novak are brilliant returners, too, obviously, with Novak arguably the greatest at it, but I suspect there's a speed at which it no longer matters, human reaction limits DO exist. Of course those radars measure the speed at the point they've just been hit, not when they reach the opponent, but even so it's kind of moot.

    • @davidevans1611
      @davidevans1611 3 месяца назад

      @@steeltrap3800 You are correct about the serve speed being measured at the point it leaves the racquet and human reaction limits. A Roddick serve hit at 140 mph on a hard court would still be traveling about 105-110 mph when it reached the server. A ball traveling at that speed goes about 160 feet per second. The distance from the serve line to the base line is 18 feet. If the returner was 10 feet beyond the base line he would have about 1/10 of a second to respond. Virtually impossible for a human even if the serve was hit close to the returner.

      @steeltrap3800 3 месяца назад

      @@davidevans1611 Yes, it's remarkable how effective Roger was at reducing the significance of Andy's serve.
      Obviously he didn't negate it, but frequently he limited it to a level where his dominance in pretty much every other aspect would see him defeat Andy on nearly every occasion.
      I haven't looked up their head to head but I bet it's painful for Andy; he'd CERTAINLY have won more slams were it not for Roger.
      While plenty of players can say that, from memory Andy stands out as one of those whose record suffered particularly.
      It reminds me of test level batsmen facing seriously fast bowlers; their available times for reactions are very low, and it's obviously instinctive to a considerable degree, too.

      You cannot mean Roger's generation is half as tough as Rafa, no way. Djokovic and Murray are more or less Nadal's age, the best Federer's age player are Rodick, Nabaldian and Ferrer...

    • @corymajor7811
      @corymajor7811 4 года назад +5

      LOL Nadal was not even ranked in the top 20 yet and nowhere near his prime level. And of course Nadal's greatness is mostly on clay and Roddick would get humiliated anytime they played there, probably even vs baby Nadal. I never thought Federer played in a weak era but that is a poor example.
