Greek and Moorish tortoises live at Moenchengladbach Zoo, also known as Odenkirchen Zoo. All European tortoises are protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Endangered Species (CITES) and are subject to labeling and reporting requirements.
To do this, they must be clearly identifiable. In Germany, identification through photo documentation is required to check identity. A microchip transponder is also possible if the tortoise's weight is 500g or more. This makes the animals much quicker and easier to identify. It also saves the effort of regularly updating the photo documentation.
When chipping, Dr. Johnen exercises extreme caution. Before this, the tortoises are weighed and photographed to ensure a seamless transition from the previous photo documentation. At the same time, the time is used to assess the overall condition of the animals.
The tortoises at Moenchengladbach Zoo are animals, which mostly came from poor husbandry. In Odenkirchen, they now have the chance to live in a way that respects animals. At the same time, the tortoises are also the starting point for educational offerings to provide information about how the animals should be kept humanely.
At Moenchengladbach Zoo, there are not only tortoises, but also turtles. » more: • Tiergarten Mönchenglad...
This shows once again how important modern zoological gardens are in the area of animal welfare. They provide long-term care for animals whose care has outgrown their previous owners. This is a very important contribution that Moenchengladbach Zoo contributes.
