I'm producing dashboards for Finance and tables are quite important still for visualisation for this group of stakeholders so this video is really good! Thanks for putting this up since 2014 and I think it was done by Andy Kiebrel who is a Tableau legend.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video and also linking to it in different places on the forums. I knew it was possible but totally forgot this approach. Even when I started working through the steps I really needed the hand holding even though some steps seem sort of obvious at this point. Thank you!
I have been looking for something like this for a while now and im glad i stumble over this vid, i wish i could give you a thousand likes, thankyou soo much :)

Great video is was very helpful. Is there anyway to right align the text within the dual axis? Usually financial numbers look better right aligned in a text table. Thanks!
Thanks for this video! New to Tableau and I thought it would be a little bit simpler to set up conditional formatting! Glad I have a way to accomplish my task now.
There is a problem with the heat map. Shipping Cost 41364 shows in red instead of green. When you Select Square and increase the size, the size increases with all dimensions, not only the length.
Can you please let me know how to get the alignment as right for the measure values in above kind of dual cross tab report? I went to format option for each measure and clicked right alignment, but it did not work.
Thanks for the upload - this is a very helpful work-around. I'm curious to know though if there's a way you could go about doing this while retaining the ability to sort by one of those columns?
Thank you very much. Thanks to this, I achieved something that others said was impossible :) There is only one thing: is it possible to give separate colors to the headers of these columns in a similar way?
Not exactly what I was trying to do, but still very handy! Thanks. (I was trying to set everything over 45 days to red and everything from 30-45 days to yellow, while still showing the number of days)
Good evening and thank you for a very good tutorial. Can you assist me with the following error message? Cannot mix aggregate and non-aggregate comparisons or results in an IF statement. The calculated field is as follows: IF [InReportMonth] THEN SAT% END The calculated field for SAT% is; AVG (IF [SAT] = "Yes" THEN 1 ELSE 0 end) One of the things I am trying to do display is SAT for both InReportMonth and InPriorMonth, but unfortunately the error comes up. Thank you for assistance. David
Hi, at 8:23 when you use square marks, some of the numbers which are in green gets converted into red which is wrong. For example, shipping cost $41k should be in green. Any idea how we can fix this.
Thank you for the informative video on conditional formatting. It was a a life saver. I was able to create the visualization using this trick but sone values show up indented to left while others are in the center. How can I fix this issue. Can you please help!
Hi! I'm so glad this video helped you so much 😊. About the indentation: have you changed the aggregation of the title measure to 'attribute' (meaning it's showing as 'attr' instead of 'sum' or 'avg', etc.)? If you have changed the measure to an 'attribute' then this changes how Tableau computes the 'sum' of it and will also change the text display position. Another place to check is the formatting of the text, see if they are all centre-aligned.
Good video, thanks for the workaround. Anyone know if excel-style conditional formatting has been added as a feature in the current version? I'm running v 2019.1. What an ordeal to accomplish something so simple.
How come when I hold down the control key and drag the second value on to my column shelf it does not do what yours did. Does it matter if the values I am working with are calculated fields?
I'm afraid that there is some issue in the final highlighted shipping cost column. As the legend shows on the left it changes from $450 to $41364 ranging from red to green. But in the worksheets the shading of the $41364 is red. Actually I figured out that the shading is not that size, they are VERY LARGE squares and they overlap with each other. So how to solve this problem, thanks.
Very handy, thanks. But, when I try to export the table as a CrossTab to Excel it takes a while to create the report and when the report is created the output does not resemble the crosstab view I have created in Tableau :-(
Hello, has anyone figured out how to change what data pops up when you hover over certain values in the worksheet? After completing everything shown in the video, I am now seeing every single column for the specific row instead of just the information for the specific cell I'm hovering over. Thanks!
One thing that I noticed was that the color scheme for Shipping Cost does not match the values within the box. The color legend for Shipping Cost has a range of $450
Can't get the separator lines for the rows to show in the pane. Is there any way around this? Tried formatting, but no luck in getting the lines or the grey white bars across the rows.
Great video.. But if you see the last few steps.. The Shipping cost formatting is messed up due to the square size ... The one highlighted in green wasn't supposed to be green at all.. That green belongs to "Chairs and Chairmats" .. Basically the color and Text aren't in sequence .. :(
You are absolutely right, well spotted. It looks like squares can't be used in the manner described in the video - we'll add some annotation to the video
Hi - I think the best approach is to follow similar to advice to that in the links below regarding using a calculation to check whether it is the Total row or not: www.theinformationlab.co.uk/%3F2014/10/27/HighT_HeatMap_TotalProblem drawingwithnumbers.artisart.org/customizing-grand-totals-part-2/
Video is awesome, but surely customer will come to me with a "but it's easier in MicroStrategy or Excel"... my face will go down. I'll have to be prepared. Thanks for the video anyway!
Great video. Thanks. But hopelessly complex to achieve a simple, common requirement. As every month goes by, Tableau is looking more like a dinosaur compared to PowerBI
It seriously is. In my previous job I used Power BI and had never used Tableau. I moved to a different job and was super excited to try out Tableau. It has been a pretty crappy experience. DAX is amazing, I miss being able to use ggplot2 R visuals, and Power Query is light years ahead of Tableau. I miss Power BI lol.
You need a lot of trickery to get this software to work. Seems like a new player can totally take over the market if they just make some software where everything is intuitive and this kind of stuff is not needed.
For those of you who only want to differentiate the metrics with specific color legends, maybe this video helps: ruclips.net/video/haBzKa1bPQw/видео.html
Kind of unbelievable that something so simple requires such an elaborate workaround. Thanks for sharing!
It blows my mind that it takes this much hacking to get such a simple feature. At any rate, this tutorial is hugely beneficial. Thank you!

This is exactly what I was looking for to complete my dashboard. Thank you!
great tip, but major fail for tableau. after 10 releases, still dont have this basic excel feature
Still here 2 years later with same issue.

Yo, THANK you. So glad I watched this. Great stuff here.
What if I need to have a row-wise conditional formatting? That is, different color ranges for different rows?
Simple and easy to understand. Thanks
Thanks a lot! I was trying to figure this since a while! Very easy but smart trick :)
Great video. It helped me finalize a viz they way I wanted. Thanks again!

I have 2 measures in the Attr(1) column. CAn i still bring coditional formatting for 2 different measures. ?

Step 1: change the field from "square" to "bar" -> Step 2: set the top axis from 0 to 1 -> Step 3: set bar size to max. Hope this helps!

Is it possible to get the grid lines as well?

Hi Wonderful Video, Can you please update how to conditionally format the background color of the column ?
This is an awesome video ! Thanks so much !
One thing that I noticed was that the color scheme for Shipping Cost does not match the values within the box. The color legend for Shipping Cost has a range of $450
Had the same issue, no fix afaik but to decrease the size, not as pretty but at least accurate
Can't get the separator lines for the rows to show in the pane. Is there any way around this? Tried formatting, but no luck in getting the lines or the grey white bars across the rows.
You have to do the formatting before you start this process. :)
Now, how could I sort by column?
Great video.. But if you see the last few steps.. The Shipping cost formatting is messed up due to the square size ... The one highlighted in green wasn't supposed to be green at all.. That green belongs to "Chairs and Chairmats" .. Basically the color and Text aren't in sequence .. :(

+Syed Ahmed +The Information Lab I used this video and instead used bars - worked for my setup, hopefully anyone else's too
So clutch! Thanks!
Thanks man! The Tableau forums are packed with some complex workarounds that are not as effective as your method.
Excellent Video. This helps :) thanks
How can I establish different width for columns?
hy,
when i do totals for the colums the tableau coloring my totals and putting also the bar graph on thr total.
can i cancel it?
Hi - I think the best approach is to follow similar to advice to that in the links below regarding using a calculation to check whether it is the Total row or not:
www.theinformationlab.co.uk/%3F2014/10/27/HighT_HeatMap_TotalProblem
drawingwithnumbers.artisart.org/customizing-grand-totals-part-2/
thanks man.... saved alot of head banging
why you changed to ATTR here ?
Good video, but the resolution makes it a little hard to make out exactly what you're doing.
hi, can you tell how to change color of sheet !!
thanks for this
Video is awesome, but surely customer will come to me with a "but it's easier in MicroStrategy or Excel"... my face will go down. I'll have to be prepared.
Thanks for the video anyway!
totally agree, Tableau should have those basic formatting build in which Excel already has, instead of embarrassing the users on "new" learning curve
NICE!!!
When you use the "square" mark, the squares overlap and therefore don't show the correct color to line up with each row...
Step 1: change the field from "square" to "bar" -> Step 2: set the top axis from 0 to 1 -> Step 3: set bar size to max. Hope this helps!
@@davidfeldman5649 Thanks man !

I'm finding if I try to sort any column it just sorts based on the values of the first - is anyone else having this issue?
That's expected..
Did you figure this out? How to sort in with this thecnique?
Nice Trick..

that player is called excel i think
