Backpacking for a year. When I was 18/19 back in 1973, I lived out of my backpack for almost a year in Europe. I hitchhiked and rode trains all over Germany, France, Austria, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal, Canary Islands, and Madeira. I also worked 3 different jobs, 2 in Germany and 1 in Switzerland. I slept in many hostels, in homes of people I met, on many trains, in a bus, on the beach, in a cave, in a castle, in a row boat on the beach, in a barn, in an airport, on a "slow" boat, and on a plane. After 11 months, I was worn out and homesick. I met many great people, and many people who were very kind to me. One couple even "adopted" me. Initially, I went to Germany to become fluent in German, which never happened. I took German in high school and college, and really improved after working and living in Germany. But, I was burned out and needed to be stationary again. But, 2 years later and a girlfriend (now my wife), I/we went back to Europe, hitchhiking/backpacking and wandering and sleeping on trains and in hostels for 3 months in the wintertime (bad idea). After that, I really needed to be in a permanent location again. In 2000, with just a daypack, my wife and I spent a month in Switzerland, Spain, Portugal and the Azores, traveling by train, boat, bus, plane, and "a little" hitchhiking. When our kids were in elementary school, we moved to the Big Island in Hawaii for a year. We also lived in Iowa for 3"+ years, 7 months in Lake Placid, and several years all over rural, northern California. Again, it's great to have a homebase. Now, as we are close to 70, we are preparing to vagabond in our vehicle for "brief periods", regularly returning to our permanent homebase. John, California
sounds like you've lived an incredibly fun and exciting and full life! your life is my dream life. i have done a lot of travel but ive never lived overseas before which is something id love to do.
Bondi boy here, Ive been living in Chiang Mai for over 5 years, been riding motorbikes for 50 plus years, trust me, riding bikes here, sooner or later you are going to come unglued, so PLEASE at LEAST wear some boots....... Ive been cleaned up twice here in serious bike accidents, both times just tootling along and got wiped off the road by drunk drivers, BUT a lesson I learned 50 years ago, NEVER RIDE WITHOUT PROTECTION, in both ""accidents"" here I hit the tarmac and rolled numerous times and got up with sore bones BUT ALL MY SKIN IN TACT cause i ALWAYS wear boots jeans jacket gloves FULL FACE HELMET,.......... I shudder when I see people riding in shorts and thongs......... you go down wearing thongs and shorts tshirts you are going to have months of PAINFUL RECOVERY.......... JUST DONT DO IT IF YOU LIKE YOUR BODY/SKIN THE WAY IT IS........... just sayin......... enjoy Hua Hin......... like you said...... focusing on health and wellbeing.......
Same,i follow the “all the gear all the time” rule when on my bike in Chiang Mai…it’s hot but I’d rather sweat than be flayed or get badly injured or dead…
Yeah, I saw those flip flops he had on, and was like, ugh, no. It’s tough in the hot humid climates, but it’s only a matter of time until you meet the pavement.
As a Thai person who was born in the south, used to live in BKK, Phuket, Koh Samui, Chiang Mai and now living oversea. Hua Hin is still the best place for me compared to those touristic places. It's not too crowed, very close to Bangkok and very convenience to get around Thailand. Congrats!
Beautiful Thailand makes you feel like it's home where the heart is. I found myself here and don't want to ever leave.....happy life full of new adventures.
I'm so glad to hear that you are settling down and moving into a new chapter of your life. It's important to listen to your heart and follow what feels right for you. Change can be scary, but it can also lead to great growth and opportunities. Wishing you both all the best in this next adventure!
Happy for you Lloyd & Mandy. Hua Hin is on my radar as well as a place to move to (from Alberta, Canada). Your decision to have a home base while continuing a travel lifestyle also appeals to me. Wishing you both much happiness & fulfillment!
Hua Hin is a quiet beach town. It's easy to get to from Bangkok - about 3 hours by train South West. Not much action... a bit boring. The island of Koh Samet is about a similar distance. It's about 3 hours bus shuttle South East of Bangkok plus a ferry ride. Being a small island, Koh Samet has more beautiful beaches and all the action because it's close to BKK and Pattaya. Koh Samet is more friendly and less touristy than Phuket or Koh Samui.
I have been enjoying your vlog for years. My husband, son and I have been to SE Asia 8 times and have spent several months at a time, but haven't been able to make the leap of moving. I am drawn to Hua Hin, even though we have so many friends and spent so much time in Bali. Long story short, that is amazing to hear your dog was in Sicamous. That is where I lived for many years. Small world! We are still in BC with our dog and that has been another big thing holding has back from the move. Anyways, loving hearing your experience on Hua Hin, seems like it ticks a lot of boxes.
Fantastic news for you all.Its a beautiful area. Relax and start living the life you want. Bear is so much part of your family. As you know, we have 3 black Labradors, which we can't live without. Have just returned from Singapore, and we had a young couple house sit with the oldest, the other 2 went to a pet care home, but truly it was very expensive. It was difficult to find anyone to sit with the 3 of them. I cried when I saw Bear. Love , peace and goodluck.x
Great to see guys. I'm a digital nomad myself and have been living in Thailand in Phuket for 18 months and now moving to HUA HIN next week actually. Hope to connect when im there.
a good choice for a base. I too live HH. I tried Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Bkk, East Side Pattaya, Jomtien, but kept coming back to HH, so now, its my for ever home. Great place and easy for travel, as you say. Enjoy.
Welcome back and great choice! I've recently moved back to Hua Hin & luvvin it. Perfect base to live and to do sidetrips from, near or far, always a pleasure to return and enjoy. Seen you guys around and looking fwd to seeing Bear in the sidecar, will say hi next time. Cheers, STL
Hua hin is famous among Thai people . Vintage environment , peaceful . Affordable.. At the same time, they have convenient life good mall , supermarket, many new condominiums . Ours kings liked to relax here since king Rama 6 till king Rama 9 , you can see few beachfronts palace in this province.
I’m Aussie and my partner and I have been doing the Digital Nomad thing for the past couple of years also, but we do the long-travel where we stay 1-3 months in one place, gosh moving every week would be a nightmare for us! We definitely love Thailand also, we’ve just spent 3 month in Chiang Mai & loved every moment. We also went down to Hua Hin for a week, we thought it was OK…We are currently in Da Nang, have you guys been here yet?
We really can’t believe this! We’ve been following you (not literally) for a while now and you’ve decided to settle in our next holiday destination! Yes, we’ll be in Hua Hin in only 2 weeks time! 🇹🇭
Hey guys, I think you have made the right decision for sure. Your travel vlogs are awesome and stuffed packed full of great info and advice and I hope you keep that up for as long as you want to. I have stayed in Hua Hin 3 times and it was great each time, hence the reason for returning. It just has everything other places don't have. So I fully understand why you moved there. Thanks, guys and I did order the AG1 so hopefully it will be the thing I am looking for. Peace
Its great seeing you all back together again. I love Hua Hin I think its a great place for a base for all the reasons you mentioned. Cant wait to see more ❤
Good choice you landed on HH. Loads of activities to do, easy travel for a change at nearby towns, lots of national parks in a couple of hours range to visit, Airasia's direct flights to Chiang Mai if you miss cool weather. All in all it's perfect. So happy for you three!
This is so funny... my wife and I have been following you guys while we're been on a similar mission. Our trip took us also to USA and Latin America. My wife being Brazilian made us stay a longer time in Brazil. However we're not settled in.... tada... Hua Hin 😁 Hua Hin is not a place I would go to for a holiday. However for residency this is a great place and we already have a network here. We're a bit outside the city toward Khao Tao. Would be fun to bump into you guys one day
Awesome news for the three of you, reunited! And congrats ion Hua Hin and your home base. It’s so important. I’ve chosen Da Nang for myself after a full year of travelling and can’t wait to settle here and have some stuff and comfort and take it from there. It’s important. And so much healthier to not be in Bangkok. Mandy, you’re looking really well again and you both look happy. Keep it up!
Wow, congrats for finding a place that works for you. Have been looking at Hua Hin for a bit as a place to spend some of my retirement time. Good to see Bear. Thanks for sharing.
Great video, Lloyd and Mandy, good to see you healthy and that you found a very nice pot o' gold at the end of that one of your many travel rainbows. I loved that you got your precious pooch down there as well. Thailand for 3 to 5 months is on my bucket list. You mentioned that you spent some time in Mexico, and you liked many aspects of your stay there, but you had concerns about your safety. In been to Mexico 4 times, mostly on the the Caribbean Coast, but my dream is to spend sometime at several Central and west coast Mexico cities, San Miguel, Mexico City, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta, with the hope of learning the language, possible do some long-term stays and establish residency. Mexico City has 124 museums, which really appeals to me. Mexico is THE most popular country for ex pat Americans as well as Canadians and thousands of Europeans as well. People love the climate, the great food, the cost of living and the culture. Most of of the people I know that reside there, say that the petty and sometimes serious crime that occurs in Mexico is no doubt real, but it's not common everywhere, which is the case in nearly every popular country that deals with transplanted citizens, certain areas are safer than others. I respect your sense of adventure and I was wondering what cities did you experience in Mexico and what were your trepidations as far as safety? Best wishes in your new abode!
In Thailand people leave helmets on their bikes and go shopping. People don't lock bicycles. While I wouldn't say theft is unheard of, it's pretty rare. There's security at all the condos, but nothing ever happens. In 30 years, I've never been ripped off, and I haven't heard many stories (unless you are involved with prostitutes or drugs of course). Thai people are welcoming and friendly, and it's just a more developed, more secure, more convenient, better organized, cleaner country at less than half the price. You can get a great massage for less than $10 US.
Great decision guys and my wife and I are very excited Bear has joined you. We have watched you from the beginning and wish you well on this next chapter. Cheers!!!
Welcome to Hua Hin... I had the same idea when I chose Hua Hin to be my home town... There are many more to discover in Hua Hin and nearby cities like Cha-Am, Petchaburi, Prachaub Kirikhan and many more...
Hua Hin is definitely a good choice: home to the primary summer royal residence of the late King Rama IX. It's also not as rainy as in the other parts of Thailand during the Monsoon season.
OMG!!! I’m so glad I found a RUclipsr from Thailand who knows what is it mean healthy lifestyle. I love fasting and many different vitamins minerals, etc. I watched your videos because we gonna go to Thailand(Bangkok, Phuket, Koh Samui) on this Friday for 2 weeks from the USA. We are so excited. Thanks for your awesome videos. 🤩🫶🤗
Congrats you two!! I have been to Hua Hin several times and plan on coming back in 2026 I find it a quiet relaxed town and always enjoy my visits. Keep doing what you’re doing all the best!!
Wonderful news!! and Bear looks so happy! Because of your journeys and the wonders of modern youtube, I have also become captivated with the area of HuaHin and Thailand in general, so I bought a condo to make sure I would return 555. Thank you for all you have done for casual travelers like me and the millions who don't know they are travelers yet. If we ever cross paths, I owe you a couple dozen travel tips lol. Be safe!
It's been a little while since I caught up with you two, I think it was Mexico, not that it means much to you, but it was great watching this video and catching up. So happy for the two of you and Bear finding that comfort place.
Hi from nz we first stayed in hua hin about 30 plus years ago. Still quite like it but really loved it when it was just a fishing village and few travelers were there. Was really unknown to most people back then.
Congratulations on your decision! I was there just a month ago and had same kind of thought process you mentioned in the video. I can't wait for your next video that goes more into the details of your decision making. I'm still thinking about settling in that general area. I also found another remote place near Chiang Mai. Somehow it felt just like home when I was there. While the beach has a special pull, this other place captivated me much more with its unique laid back ambiance and surroundings. Back to the viewpoint: They really need to post some signs, or post a security guard to warn the tourist about the monkeys. This huge male monkey aggressively attacked my scooter trying to steel the bag of coconuts that were hanging on the scooter. He just would not let go. I managed to fight him off eventually. But when I came back from the viewpoint I found scooter seat ripped. There were some granola bars locked under the seat. Needless to say, this cost me some money when I returned the scooter. Then I was at another viewpoint, about an hour south of Hua Hin. As I entered the parking lot, out of nowhere a big monkey jumped all over me, it was as if he was waiting for me to enter the parking lot. I think he was hiding in a tree overhead. So thing to remember is not to have any food items on you or in the scooter. But don't let that scare you, it's nuisance, mainly in the mountain areas.
Hua Hun was King Rama IX residence. It's laid back, safe, close to BKK, plenty of great food, world class hospital and shopping, night market, close to beach, waterfall, boat to Koh Tao, Kui Buri Elephant safari, etc.
Fasting, meaning all day or intermittent fasting where you don’t eat certain hours within the day? For example, only eat from 13:00-19:00 (1:00-7:00 pm)??
I love all your videos and you both look great. It is nice to see that you have both found a place to settle down yet still have options to travel. Your backyard looks beautiful and the pool so inviting. i just knew Bear would be back with both of you. It would be heartbreaking to leave him behind.
I am really happy that you finally settled and find it in Thailand and especially with the dog! We also have 2 dogs and looking for some opportunities to travel with them.
Congratulations on your new home and having bear rejoin you. I have been to Hua Hun twice once in 2006 and once last year. I completely understand why you love it as I do to. I’m hoping to head back that way sometime this year on my travels to. I have been full time traveling since November 2023 🥰
Happy for you three! I am waiting to retire there from California, a few more years (I was born in Thailand). My top 3 are Chiang Mai, Hua Hin, and Krabi. I'm with Mandy and not a city person and can do without all the noise and comotion. I waver between Hua Hin and Chiang Mai. I love Chiang Mai when I was there. Hua Hin has been making the rounds in different magazines like Forbes as best place (top 3) to retire for expats. I hear there is a large community of expats there. Waiting to see you and Bear around town.
Lloyd, yes it really is always best (smart!) to assume that wild animals are rabid. Also, please never show any animal fear, because they will pick up on it and take advantage of your fear. Lovely to see Bear living with and loving up on his Mum and Dad. He must have missed you so!
Oh,, I m Thai and be your follower for awhile, I m so happy that you chose Huahin, I m based in Bkk and just bought my second house in Huahin last 3 months too, trying to spend time there more often,, Huahin is really lovely place,,, wish to see you guys there sometime ... Congratulations 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you guys for sharing and it helps me a lot, since I am concidering on moving to south east Asia. My first thoughts were moving to Hua Hin actually, because of the I heard from other RUclipsrs. Then my wife was more focussed going to Bali. In the end we will do vacations in both locations and decide after that. Considering that we have 2 small children that need to go to school, we have to find the perfect spot for all of us. Thanks again, your video helps a lot. ❤
Awesome to see you've found a place that makes you happy. Again, thanks for inspiring us to start our own channel. We'll be in Hua Hin ourselves soon! Maybe we'll bump into you there! ❤
Oh my Gawd! Hua Hin! I have been following you guys since Bali and I have been coming to Hua Hin for ten years now. My son lives and works in Bangkok so the proximity for us is NB. I am actually in Hua Hin right now! Leaving at the end of the month to visit friends in Koh Samui then back home to Canada for the summer. Will be back next year. Looking forward to hearing more about why you chose this place as home base. Now that I am retired am thinking about the same thing. Cheers
Glad you found a home base and brought Bear over. Weirdly, of the 3 channels I'm watching who were all living in Play last year, you're now all in Thailand.
Well well, I have been following you since your Bali days so quite fun to see you choosing Hua Hin as I have been living here for 30 years now. If you make a meet up at some point I would like to join, maybe I can give some advice or ideas about the city and Thailand overall as I worked as a tourguide here for the same 30 years.
Hi, Lloyd & Mandy. Good for you that now you have a fixed base to rest & recharge. And with your beloved dog by your side. Happy for you all! Admired your carefree lifestyle. Some day, I gonna do it! Craving for a total makeover of my life! Thanks for your sharing. 🙂
Hi guys, congrats for the growth of the channel and yours life. U know that it's not very difficult to move on three cats to Australia from Spain ? U know the important to stay together with our pets. Thanks guys, ❤
I’m really surprised. I was in Hua Hin last week and was not impressed. I guess I must have missed something. I did find that the expats seemed to be on the REALLY old side. I’m sixty and most expats looked like they had 20 years on me.
OMW!!!! BEAR is back with you again!!! 🙌🏼❤🙌🏼❤🙌🏼❤ My tears are flowing with happiness. Amazing human parents reuniting with your fur-baby, where he belongs. Your family is complete again. Wishing you SOOOO much joy, love & happiness in your new home-base ❤❤❤
Khao Takiab Monkey Mountain is my favourite viewpoint in Hua Hin. Also has a really lovely and inexpensive restaurant half way up the hill. I always approach it from the beach side. Hua Hin is my go to place. Close enough to BKK if I need to go shopping or the big city experience. Hopefully see you around the place when I'm back there in April.

Wow we are so excited for you Guys here in South Afri🇿🇦 We are so happy that Bear is back. We are looking forward to the next episode🥂🍾💕
So happy for the two of you and Bear finding that comfort place.
also, not travel vlog stays the same for long. This feels like a change is coming for the better for you two!
Great to see you two settled and with your doggo! ❤ Well done!
I have visited there, as i had family there and it is a lovely place. Enjoy building your new life there, roll on the next adventure 🎉
So happy you’ve been able to get Bear “home”, I had tears in my eyes. 😊 awesome vlog guys, much ❤ from Auckland New Zealand 🇳🇿
Welcome to Hua Hin, I’ve lived here for 3 years and love it! I’m so glad more people under 60 are also moving here 🎉
Hua Hun was King Rama IX residence.
I love Bear so much 🥰!!!!!!
The right choise guys, send you a big hug 🤗😍😘
Well done you two! Glad to see Bear back and I can imagine how good it is for you to settle down.
Oh gosh..I cried when you brang Bear out.... he looks so good too.
I'm glad that you chose my country as your home based. Thank you.😊
Thank you guys for sharing and it helps me a lot, since I am concidering on moving to south east Asia.
Welcome home, exactly why we've retired to Hua Hin too.
Oh my Gawd! Cheers
Very happy you have found your ‘home’. However I think I was happier when Bear appeared. Now waiting to see the 3 of you travelling on the bike. 😀
My comp went funny you have Bear made me cry I so agree we have a doggie he is family and for life so happy Bear is apart your family Hug xoxo
Congratulations 🎉 so happy your babies back home with you guys, I'd love a villa tour and like cost of living where you are per month etc 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Glad you have found a place you feel comfortable to make a home for a good while. Looks like a great lifestyle.
Bill from Shakti (in the states a few states a few more days), but anxious to congratulate you in person! WooHaa!!
So happy for you both!! I’ve followed all of your epic videos and we are actually looking at Hua Hin for this year!!
Glad you found a home base and brought Bear over. Weirdly, of the 3 channels I'm watching who were all living in Play last year, you're now all in Thailand.
At Hua hin, we might get passenger ship (boat) to Pattaya. Thai government set fast train project from Bangkok to Hua Hin, Pra-Juab Kirikhan province.
She’s so utterly beautiful, and he’s so utterly unbreakable
I felt that energy on your last video, great for you guys 🙏✨
Yeah I came here a few weeks ago, I was only planning on staying 3 days, ....I'm still here 😁
Well well, I have been following you since your Bali days so quite fun to see you choosing Hua Hin as I have been living here for 30 years now. If you make a meet up at some point I would like to join, maybe I can give some advice or ideas about the city and Thailand overall as I worked as a tourguide here for the same 30 years.
So happy for you both and sooooo happy for Bear!!!!
I hope you will be happy there.I think Hua Hin is one of the best place in Thailand.
I'm an Australian that was just recently at Ko Kood. If you haven't been there I suggest you go for a week or 3... Serenity central...
Hi guys, congrats for the growth of the channel and yours life. U know that it's not very difficult to move on three cats to Australia from Spain ? U know the important to stay together with our pets.
Thanks guys,
❤
I’m really surprised. I was in Hua Hin last week and was not impressed. I guess I must have missed something. I did find that the expats seemed to be on the REALLY old side. I’m sixty and most expats looked like they had 20 years on me.
Great choice to live in Hua Hin, awesome, wish u all the best guys 🙏😊
Great choice! Best kept unsecret town in Thailand!
Awesome to see you both so happy Guy's. Wishing you x3 all the very Best 👍
I don’t watch your videos all the time, but you guys seem peaceful.
Bear❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
So happy you 3 have been reunited.looking forward to watching all your adventures from hereon.
Aww that's awesome guys..Happy you found your home. How does it work with the visa situation? How can you stay long term?
Omg I am so happy for you both, and Kimberly a bit. Jealous. Who knows? Maybe we will be never soon😊
