Do you see the difference between this Kata (sword movement exercise) and the one he was doing while being trained? In his first Kata the sword had Conan under it’s control - Conan was performing his movements but his moves were raw, unpolished and crude. At the end of the Kata Conan looked at the sword since he thought the sword was the answer to the “Riddle-of-Steel.” Here, as he is healing, Conan has the sword completely under control. His movements are quick and concise, powerful and controlled. He looks at his hand at the completion of his Kata. Like Thulsa Doom he has come to believe that it is his flesh, his hand which is holding and controlling the sword, which is the answer to the “Riddle-of-Steel.” It is not. It is Valeria, who twice saves his life (and not the other way around), who will finally give him the answer. When she saves his life the second time she does so by coming back from Valhalla in Spirit - thus keeping her word - to stop Rexor’s blade and momentarily blinds Rexor thus giving Conan time to retrieve his sword and recover. It is NOT the steel in the sword, it is NOT the flesh which wields the sword but the SPIRIT, the WILL, the FIGHTING HEART, which animates the flesh that is the answer to the riddle. You need a fighting spirit to animate the hand which wields the sword. That is the final answer to the “Riddle-of-Steel.”

I own an Albion Armorers Atlantean Sword personally sharpened by Jody Samson before his death. At almost 8 lbs. and as easily as sharp my best katana, it's a beast just to hold. As Jody was precise in his recreation of his original creation then Arnold is swinging exactly the same 8 or so lbs. As a lifelong martial artist and general sword lover...I have, on occasion, paid tribute to Arnold's 41-second kata...Not an easy task and a bit dangerous due to its weight; I body build but a 'lightweight' compared to Arnold. The shear force needed to snap out 8 lbs without drifting is tough. epic. I still watch this scene and get this big grin.
I envy you, seriously, congrats! I always wanted this sword. Good to know it weighs out at 8 lbs also, I was always wondering how much the weight was. Yes, I can imagine a full 41 second kata would be pretty brutal, haha! @@MrDibara A Zweihänder (not "zwaihander") is a German two-handed sword betwen 1.5 and 2 meters long and weighting 2 to 4 Kg (the 4 Kg ones were largely ceremonial, the real battle ones were around 3 Kg), often with large Parierhaken ("parrying hooks") near the hilt and/or ringed hilts, that were handled like polearms rather than as swords. Conan's "Atlantean sword", designed specifically for the movie, is a fantasy design that weighted _FIVE_ Kg (no typo) and was 1 meter long. It was indeed crafted from carbon steel, but was not a sword, just a sword-shaped object, far too heavy to wield. And yes, ARNOLD (in his prime) complained of the weight.

Fun fact: this scene was inspired by a scene in the classic 1961 western movie, "One-Eyed Jacks" where Brando's character is relearning how to use guns upon recovering from his injuries
From the time I saw this as a kid until now, at age 46, you give me any kind of sword and this is how I'm swinging it. It's practically muscle memory for me at this point.
That's not a dummy sword either, that's a fully functional steel sword. You can tell that when he swings it and brings it to a stop that his body moves the right way and it's taking effort for him to do this, plus remember at the time, he was the world's strongest man.
@cid76 Yup in the 80's swords fights scenes are made with REAL weapons, even if the blade is dulled to avoid serious injury's,you could still be badly hurt, having broken bones or even an eye been gouge out.
My favorite scene as well. I was 10 year old when I watched (for the first time) movie and then tried with a wooden stick. Sadly but they don't make movies like that anymore. Peace and love to all from Croatia

"What is the sword compared to the hand that wields it?"
One of the very rare examples where music and pictures are perfectly entangled together. And both are at the very top.
Conan is full of those moments, it makes it a unforgetable movie.
Arnold Schwarzenegger's great character Conan. A great interpretation.
This is my favourite scene from this movie! The lighting, the music, the pathos and the action all come together with extraordinary power.
Fun fact: this scene was inspired by a scene in the classic 1961 western movie, "One-Eyed Jacks" where Brando's character is relearning how to use guns upon recovering from his injuries
Dont forget, the man was crucified, the wounds on his hands healed.
pretty cool when actors take time to learn skills like this makes the movie that much better
i do this with my plunger after successfully unclogging the toilet.
Everything about this scene is remarkable.
No hay película de este género mejor q está de principio a fin saludos
From the time I saw this as a kid until now, at age 46, you give me any kind of sword and this is how I'm swinging it. It's practically muscle memory for me at this point.
The most epic scene of any film in history.
when you take the red pill you feel like a king and you can take whats yours
Pure poetry...
old but gold.
Conam o bárbaro tem uma das trilhas sonoras mais espetaculares do cinema!
Eu concordo. Bjs.
This is it! John and Arnold’s triumph.
That's not a dummy sword either, that's a fully functional steel sword. You can tell that when he swings it and brings it to a stop that his body moves the right way and it's taking effort for him to do this, plus remember at the time, he was the world's strongest man.
But you can see the blade wobble independently of the handle when he stops.
Was not even the strongest man in the film. That goes to Franco Columbu!
@@seansack609 legendary bromance!
This classic scene of Conan,it would be very empty without the fantastic epic music
this scense make me be more strong and make me remember what i am made,
Hermaphrodite Community great scene. Hope you will get stronger.
@cid76 Yup in the 80's swords fights scenes are made with REAL weapons, even if the blade is dulled to avoid serious injury's,you could still be badly hurt, having broken bones or even an eye been gouge out.
0:48 "Shit! I cut myself"
My favorite scene as well. I was 10 year old when I watched (for the first time) movie and then tried with a wooden stick. Sadly but they don't make movies like that anymore.
Peace and love to all from Croatia
Glorious~
I saw this.. and I cry! Best movie ever!
Twenty two need to learn the Riddle of Steel.
Goosebumps and 🥲
"What is steel, compared to the hand, that wields it?!"
this scene showed me : discipline , honor and the most important .... peace in spirit
I imagine when he looks at his hand he is remembering the words of Thulsa Doom: Steel isn't strong. Flesh is. A sword is nothing compared to the hand that wields it.
Great music + sheer presence of Arnold + warlike expressions = THE MOST EPIC SCENE EVER
