- Father of Rock and Roll & The best guitarist of his time ! ❥ Charles Edward Anderson "Chuck" Berry (October 18, 1926 - March 18, 2017). Emergency responders summoned to Berry's residence by his caretaker about 12:40 p.m. found him unresponsive, police in Missouri's St. Charles County said in a statement. Attempts to revive Berry failed, and he was pronounced dead shortly before 1:30 p.m., police said.
Berry's core repertoire was some three dozen songs, his influence incalculable, from the Beatles and the Rolling Stones to virtually any group from garage band to arena act that called itself rock 'n roll.

Robbie Robertson - legendary guitarist of The Hawks[later renamed 'The Band'] 1961-1964 Ronnie Hawkins & The Hawks(which includes Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson) toured in the U.S. and Canada and are included in performance packages with such acts as Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins and Jackie Wilson.

And his music was both exciting and positive. Often, it celebrated life, and love; meeting a girl, wanting to know a girl, loving rock n roll, admiring the girl’s beauty, admiring a new car, driving and enjoying a car. Enjoying dancing. Going to school. Drinking in the beauty of an evening with his date.
Chuck put the youth’s thoughts and feelings in a joyous, upbeat, new music! He became a living legend.
I'm just grateful I was born in a time and place that I would end up seeing this video. Thank you, God.
Chuck was quintessential cool, and all class. I love this video, and his brilliant presence.

Fascinating man. Little glimpses of things, you wouldn't have fucked with him. The night he died, a band announced it in the pub I was in (Leeds, England) and everybody took a heavy sigh. One of the greats.
Only man, musician or not, that I've ever seen put both Robbie Robertson and Keith Richards in their places when they tried to interrupt him or ask him a question he didn't like. More so with Keith, and there's definitely video of it -- I remember it from some documentary I used to see on VH1 all the time years ago. But anyway, Keith interrupts Mr. Berry or says something he doesn't like, or something along those lines... and he just gets chastised like a little school boy, and all he can do is green sheepishly and shut his mouth. Because he knew the Professor was teaching! The man commanded respect, and for good reason.

I guess I never heard him speak before. He had such a strong and powerful singing voice. And here he's talking so soft and gentle, I could listen to him for hours

Im glad to have met him once. I knew he left out the back door of his venues by himself. At about age 20, I stood by the door and startled him. He signed an album and went his way

Great writer, lyrics that fit very well together and you knew what he was saying because you had been there. Lots of words , well explained ideas, what a vocabulary he had. Not to mention his guitar playing.
And besides, he spoke as clearly as he wrote, no mumbling or fumbling over words and much motorvating creativity.
Robbie is so darn COOL.

I read that Robbie Robertson was going to be the musical director of the “Hail, Hail Rock n Roll” film but had to drop out and Keith Richards took it over.

Great interview! Chuck Berry clearly got on with Robbie Robertson a lot better than he did Keith Richards. Just a natural, relaxed conversation between two friends with some very insightful questions and intelligent answers from Mr. Berry. He was such an intuitive guitar player. The King.

Two of the real greatest rock'n'roll song creators ever, musing about the era that turned the world onto the best music radio ever played. My only disappontment is that Robbie didn't include Chuck in the Last Waltz performance.

As i may have mentioned several times before, myself and two lifelong friends went to see chuck berry at the rainbow theatre, finsbury park, north london, in 1975. BEAT THAT.

Pretty good interview until Robbie keeps harping on why Chuck didn't keep producing more new hits. Chuck pretty much invented Rock N Roll, so it was like asking the Wright brothers why they did not go on to invent teleportation. Chuck shows great patience with him. I saw Chuck perform many times over the years, and he rarely played a song the exact same way twice, and it always rocked.
Nice of Robbie to do this with him. I danced with Chuck and got Robbie's autograph. Two of the greats!
Wow....just looking for good stuff on Chuck Berry amd I was not convinced that this interview would reveal much, but Berry has a way to make you understand that the myth is only as real as you want it to be....he comes across as someone that doesn't hold a beef against anybody or anything, even the changing times (60's). He just rolled with the changes and just never stopped being Chuck Berry. He stated he never left. Performer, song writer, personality, lover, financier and businessman and king of Rock-n-Roll!!! Hail hail rock-n-roll!!

really i thought robbinson was awful. he had his own perception and not a good listener. or just because chuck mentioned classical musicians he is some kind of intellectual? wtf? and poetry was associated with tough rebels in the 50s

Can you imagine a world where the likes of Elvis, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and all those who started before 1955 would not have done so? I read people all the time arguing about who is the "king of rock and roll" , that answer is quite simple, Elvis Presley is the king, now before you disagree with me hear me out!!!!
I just watched an interview with Carl Perkins and he was asked about all those guys and how the music got going and how it took over the world. Mr. Perkins said something very interesting, he said that no matter how good Jerry Lee was or how good Carl Perkins was or how great and mean Chuck Berry's guitar was, there was only one person who "had it all in one package" to quote Mr. Perkins. He said that it was Elvis that really caused the most stir and everyone else road on Elvis's coat tails and had successful careers because Elvis had something extra special that people connected to.
If you think about that and then look how even in 2019 Elvis is still so deeply embedded in our minds and in the very soul of this country. Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis had law troubles and it's because of that why they don't connect with so many people. But Elvis, he remained the "good" boy with that southern charm he could turn on and be this shy country boy who turned into a god when he touched the stage. In the end that's what it boils down to, who reached the most people and who the people most wanted to see, that was Elvis from 1954 and it still continues to this day. I love Chuck Berry and as a guitar player of 54 years old I can say that it was Chuck Berry who kicked out the "rockabilly" stuff and ushered in a completely new way of looking at the guitar. Nobody was playing the kind of guitar that Chuck Berry was playing, NOBODY! But, people don't connect to a guitar, they connect to a person and to charisma. No matter how good Chuck was on the guitar, he never touched the hearts of people quite the same way as Elvis did, no one else has ever done it either!! How many other artists have you seen the President of the United States address the nation when that person has passed on? Not even Frank Sinatra had that. When you throw in Chuck's legal troubles and his somewhat angry racist attitude, people could see that and like Jerry Lee Lewis people might have liked their music, but they didn't like the person so much, but everybody loves Elvis!

When one compares the amount of hits, the influences he generated and the worldwide larger than anyone else in history fan base that Elvis Presley still has today, no one else is more deserving of being called "the King" than Elvis. Had it not been for Elvis and his charisma and raw talent that early rock and roll would not have become as popular as it did and as quickly as it did. I have heard many of those old pioneers of Rock say exactly that, Had it not been for Elvis, most of them would have never really been heard on the radio.

He did a few covers - "Route 66," "Rip It Up," "Ain't That Just Like A Woman," and "Crazy Arms" come to mind. He did each in his own style! He also did a great version of BB King's "Sweet Sixteen."
Further proof, as if any more was needed, that people are dumb as shit. They go "crazy" over THAT song and pretty much ignore his huge body of amazing tunes - not to mention his guitar playing on those recordings. He doesn't even really play on Ding-a-Ling.
I'm a Robbie Robertson fan, but not even he would claim to be the "best" guitarist of his time.

Obviously this was *not* supposed to be a "professional" interview for Rolling Stone Magazine, but rather a conversation between two guys sifting through a scrapbook and bouncing off each other.

few know this but, Robbie is related to a Toronto Jewish gangster by the name of Nate Klegerman. Nate was an active member of mobster Paul Volpe's gang who were active in Toronto in the 50's, 60's and 70's. Paul was big time with casinos in Havana and many other cash operations. eventually Paul was murdered and left in the trunk of his BMW at Pearson international airport in the early 80's. Toronto forever EH????!!!

What/who is he referring to when he says “When I went away with that Indian girl ...”
In 1959 Chuck was arrested under the Mann Act and was charged with “transporting a 14 year old girl across state lines for immoral purposes”. He ended up spending 20 months in federal prison between 1960 and 1963. I’m assuming the “Indian girl” he speaks of is that 14 year old girl.

Robbie thinks a lot of himself.. and often seems to never have thought very deeply about much else....he isnt a professional interviewer..so we can cut him some slack. However, it is painfully clear he doesn't know much about chuck berry, and hasn't done any homework before doing this interview. Chuck was married 60 years.. so the "who's that" question is pretty dumb. Worse is being a total bone head about poetry...and it's relationship to song writing.. This is the classic ignorance of a guitar player.. who isn't much of anything else. Holy Crap. Chuck Berry wrote literature in the same way Bob Dylan did. it's Poetry start to finish. Wrote timeless stories everyone can recite in the dark. An 'ol Robbie is Clueless !
