Because of the heat I would go with the taupe color back. It would make the interior brighter as well as cooler. The headliner failed not because of bad glue but rather the intermediate foam layer degraded and the glue no longer had anything to stick to. Be sure to scrutinize your sunroof drain hoses as this would be the best time for replacing them due to drying out and cracking in the future. Seen too many people make this mistake over the years with restorations. You remind me of me at your age. At 62 still have my day job working on cars even though I don't have to anymore.
Brilliant comment, thanks, Dons! Great points on the headliner and drain holes, I'll make sure I don't forget. I love that you're still working on cars even though you don't have to. I'll be the same I'm sure. Thanks again.

Glad you're back Steve! For color, I would definitely stay original. Black would make for a very dark look to the interior as well as likely trap more heat. Seems like the original gray was a shade or two lighter underneath the grab handle mounts. Suppose that could be due to dirt, time and sun.

The best channel for car restoration is back! Hello Roman, I’m very glad to see you, good luck with your new project, I’m looking forward to the next video. With respect and best wishes Alexey 👍
Hi! I was so happy when I saw that you’d uploaded a new video! I absolutely love watching your amazing restorations. Your meticulous approach and your attention to detail is wonderful to see. This may sound strange but watching your videos are like therapy for me, they reduce my stress levels considerably. I suffer a bit from OCD so watching you work really helps with that. I especially love the videos of you restoring cars. Have you ever seen a RUclips channel called ‘Cortina City’? If you enjoy car restorations then I highly recommend it. Anyway thanks for all you do in making these videos, they make me (and I’m sure many others) very happy! All the best Howard.

I'm also glad you enjoy the car stuff especially, because there's going to be a lot of it coming your way. I haven't heard of that channel, but I'll be sure to check them out. Stay with the OEM colour unless you are changing the seats, trim, door cards and carpet. Awesome content btw I wish you were making these videos when I owned my E30, E28 and Volvo 240 every job you are showing us how to do was a job that at least one of my cars needed doing. I just had too much going on and the Haynes manuals were only getting me so far. I had to get rid of all of them in the end 😢. Keep making these videos you are an invaluable asset to the E30 community.
Just made the decision to go black on my headliner for my SAAB 900 resto. My headliner material is paperboard and unfortunately it cracked due to stress at the skinny bits when removing. I went with black specifically to better hide the fixes I made as, although the fixes are pretty decent, they may be seen with a lighter material. I have biege trim (handles, sun shades, and sunroof trim) similar to you have and I will admit, I'm anxious to see the final result. I'm just finishing up final body work and paint, and haven't re-installed anything just yet. I have a feeling that the black will make the cabin of my SAAB feel smaller, but hopefully more cozy. We'll see...
Hi Steve, you probably know already, but just in case, I have replaced 3 headlinings now and have used Martrim for the fabrics and glue. They are really helpful and nice people to deal with. Always nice to see a new video.
I'd have to redo the whole interior in black leather, and black carpet, but thats me. What I did with the A4 I'm restoring. I HATE headliner work. Removed it and reinstalled myself, and that was not easy. Yours went pretty smooth.
Black headlning is nice (the headlining on my Mercedes W204 is black) but I think it would be best to keep it the original colour. It is obvious that the foam has just disintegrated.
Yay ,good to see you back working on the Touring. I’d say stick to the original colour, yes i like the idea of black, but having followed you for what seems like years now, and knowing your attention to detail, i think you wouldn’t be able to leave it at that, and sun visors and other bits of trim would have to be changed as well. Given that you’re going to sell, i would do the minimum amount of required jobs, but with your usual best work. Just my thoughts. Steve
Chose the color you like or think others will like in case you decide to sell it. Just make sure and remove all the old foam before you try to adhere a new cloth in or it will fail in no time. Tips a soft wire brush with light pressure makes fast work of it.
When it comes to the color .... definitely sticking to the original. That silver already wasn't so often sold compared to the red and black ones back in the days (at least here in Bavaria), so it's beginning to become somewhat exotic, and I like that decent, elegant color on the otherwise a bit .... uhm, "rural" E30s ... Was going to post exactly that. It is the foam that fails, and is the curse of a vast number of 1990s vehicles. The problem is similar to the failure of the foam rings that were used on stereo speakers, generally woofers, in years past. As for the repairs, I have never seen one where the new fabric fits as smoothly as the original.

Thanks, Simon. Yes, choosing the colour is one thing, finding it is another. The sunroof panel is a surprisingly great condition, as is the rest of the roof.
My personal opinion on the headliner is do what you think looks best which I'm guessing is black since you brought it up. Either way with you doing the restore I'm sure it will look nice
I've only bought it up as two people have mentioned it to me as if it's the normal thing to do in this situation. But I'm leaning more towards the factory colour, as I usually would.
I’d leave the original color the darker colors tend make the interior hotter in the summer months anyway
Good thinking, Paul. Thanks again!
I'd say keep the grey headliner. Black would suit the Sport better.
Cheers for the feedback, Maddox!
Perhaps a previuos owner have filled the blinker fluid in the wrong place?
I think so... easy mistake, haha.
