  • And now I honor, perhaps my all time favorite villain, that genocidal gargoyle, the crazy red-head herself... Demona!
She is just such a well developed character. Well rounded, tragic, and downright Shakespearian. Great design, and Marina Sirtis was perfectly cast in the role... just as well cast as Mark Hamill was as the Joker.

"What have I... What have THEY done!"
That line pretty much sums up a large part of her character. She likes to see herself as a Magneto-like figure, but almost everything bad that has happened to her is completely her own fault, but she will never take responsibility for her actions, preferring to blame everyone else around her, especially humanity (a Shakespearean-esque fatal flaw).

She knows what she did was wrong to her clan. Notice how she almost said, "what have I done" and how quickly she said "what have they done". She feels guilty but rather than face it, she shifts the blame to humans. The humans may have swung the mace, but she gave them the opportunity.

+Mirnum007-She never told the clan there was a planned sack on the castle to where they went to sleep not knowing what was even going to happen. She had a chance to at least warn Coldstone/Othello and Desdemona but she refused to tell them anything. Perhaps because she felt they would side with Goliath on this and try to stop her if they knew. She believed this was the best course of action for everyone, damn if they agree or not. She and their human ally didn't realize they were going to be betrayed by the Vikings as badly as they were, but she had a feeling it could happen. And didn't do anything to prevent it except to save herself.
She was the one who created the original Hunter and created the Duncan/Canmore family line of Hunters who continued to hunt and kill several more gargoyles. Her betrayal of MacBeth cost the gargoyles who followed her their lives. And her actions helped create Jon Castaway who created the Quarrymen, even more militant figures dedicated to eradicating all gargoyles.
She has caused so much suffering to many gargoyles and humans. She destroyed MacBeth's entire life just for knowing her and aiding her. Her actions led to most of her clan getting slaughtered. And she can't accept the responsibility for it in any way, always shifting the blame to someone else, anyone else. Most of the time it's humans but she's willing to blame gargoyles for her own actions. She can't accept that she is the same monster she claims to be fighting against and never will accept it.

The tragedy of Demona is that she cannot let go of her hatred of humanity, because it is her coping mechanism for dealing with her grief and regret. Letting go of that hate would be the same as admitting that she was the one responsible for everything that happened. Doing so would destroy her, emotionally.

    • @feraflauna3238
      @feraflauna3238 4 года назад +56

She has lived most of her life hating humans. Even before the betrayal where most of the Scottish clan was slaughtered, she had an immense hatred and distrust of humans. Where she was never able to completely trust anyone outside of maybe Goliath. And even then, she had a hard time understanding, let alone accepting his decisions as a leader.
She has lived that way for so long, consumed by that hatred and misery that she has inflicted, that that is all she knows. She doesn't know to live any other way. To where all attempts to get her to acknowledge and come face to face with herself has failed. "What have I. . .what have THEY done to you?"
The Weird Sisters' curse on her only allows her to forever live that same life of hatred and misery without any release of mortality to stop her. Puck cursed her to be human during the day, knowing it would be the very thing she despised, and maybe, he hoped it would get her to realize what being human was like. All it did was make Demona despise humans even more. Because changing her into a human during the day only changes her appearance. It does nothing to change the "person" she is inside.
Even when she meets her own daughter, and her daughter wants to have a relationship with her, she can't let go of her immense hatred even for her daughter. Even when Angela explains Katherine, The Magus, and Tom saved her and the rest of the hatchlings' lives. And Angela wouldn't be alive if not for them. She wants her daughter to join her, to feel every bit of hatred that she does, and all it does is drive Angela further away from her. Demona will probably never know or have a relationship with her grandchildren-Angela and Broadway's children-because she can't, will not let go of the same thing she has lived for most of her life.
And unlike MacBeth, she can't accept that there is something better. When MacBeth met Goliath again, Goliath encouraged him that MacBeth can be happy again if he wants to be. He can have a life worth living again, rather than always seeking to die. Demona is permanently trapped by her own hatred to where she will not want to live any other way.

@@jalenikezeue4114 Magneto is a bit more compassionate and has more of a heart. And I think Magneto is more sad and broken. He witnessed some of the worst atrocities humankind has ever inflicted on each other. He lost his entire family. He barely survived the Holocaust.
And unlike Demona, he actually did try to live among regular humans after that. Encouraged by Xavier, he really wanted to believe that there was a best in humanity he wasn't seeing. He truly wanted to see what Xavier saw.
But the regular humans he met repeatedly failed him. He didn't see humanity as getting better and more accepting. To where over time, he just. . .gave up. He didn't see a way for regular humans and mutants to co-exist and in fact, several humans kept on "proving" to him that there wasn't a chance of true co-existence and peace. Xavier kept asking him, pleading with him to keep giving humanity a chance, give them more time, and Magneto finally asked, "Well, WHEN is that time going to happen?" And not even Xavier could answer that.
Magneto is more of a "good guy playing for the wrong side." He means well, and he cares very deeply about his followers usually, but he just goes about things entirely the wrong way. Demona is too selfish and completely self motivated. And one major thing is that Magneto went to extremes only after he was pushed that far and felt he had no other way to achieve peace for mutants. Demona always looked for the extremes, always looked for a reason to betray humans, always looked for a reason to validate why she never trusted anyone.

@@Blueman2018 Maybe or maybe not. Angela did reveal to Demona that Katherine, The Magus, and Tom scurried them to safety where the humans raised her and the other gargoyle children like their own, and Demona dismissed it. She was still beyond furious that her own child was raised by humans, and I don't think Demona would've ever accepted it that a human would've taken in a clan like that. It was always too unthinkable for her.
Demona always hated humans and had an immense distrust of them. She wanted to attack Katherine when Katherine openly insulted the clan in their presence and it was only Goliath that held her back. Goliath was the one who was always willing to co-exist with humans, even if it was just for a mutual survival among the races, but Goliath hoped for even better where gargoyles and humans could live together.
I'm not sure how Hudson really felt about that prospect but he trusted and understood Goliath's judgment. The "kids" were afraid of humans but didn't really hate them. Demona did and she didn't understand why Goliath was willing to live with humans like this. She only agreed to honor his decision because he was the clan's leader and her love.
Demona always had a disdain for humans, so much so she agreed to sack the castle. She was a part of that plan. She didn't go back at sunrise because she didn't even trust that human ally enough. So when the sack went bad and most of the clan was decimated and wiped out, with Goliath and the others trapped in an eternal stone sleep, it shattered whatever good heart she still had.
To her, it confirmed every worse thing she ever believed about humans. Refusing to acknowledge her responsibility in what happened. If Demona had known Katherine, the Magus, and Tom were planning on escaping with the eggs to safety, she would've slaughtered them and took the eggs for herself. Where they would be raised to hate humans just as much as she does. And they may have been killed like the rest of Demona's second clan when she turned against MacBeth.

+DawCawAnalyst-This is the only true time I legitimately feel sorry for Demona. And I think it's a too brief glimpse into the "humanity" she actually hides inside. She sacrificed everything for her blood feud with humans, she lost everyone that ever mattered to her. Goliath is very much her heart and with him gone, I think that's a big reason why she became so monstrous. Where she turned even against him-he didn't change. She did. Losing him broke her. It made her lose what compassion and heart she ever did have.
She dedicated her life to destroying humans, never even completely trusting MacBeth, her closest human ally, because she always suspected he would turn against her too eventually. And when it looked even remotely like MacBeth did, even though he never did, Demona was willing to severe their alliance completely.
Demona can't trust anyone. She loves no one anymore. And her endless need for vengeance has left her with no one and nothing where she is all alone. And deep down, she acknowledges that is all she ever has. This is the one of the only few times in the series she is willing to cry openly.
The Weird Sisters only show her, remind her of what she already knows. They probably had their own motivation for doing so, they probably needed to break her enough so they could take over her mind. But they definitely knew where to hit and hit in the heart of what Demona truly knows. What she usually refuses to admit and accept. Because after the spell is lifted, she shrugs this off that she was just under a spell, nothing more. She will never let go of her hate as long as she lives. And as long as the Weird Sisters curse is in effect, she can live forever that way, miserable and always alone.

She can never get past the idea that she knows more than anyone else, we saw that in the flashback for the Archmage where she kept trying to convince Goliath to take command from Hudson, it's always about what she wants and what she thinks she deserves, we saw this even more when she had the chance to warn some of her clan about the viking attack during the day but instead she did nothing.

She has to believe that what she has done led to something better, even if she has been left with no one and nothing. Where she can't even have a relationship with her daughter because of who she is.
Demona hates everyone but she hates herself even more deep down. She can't live with herself and yet, due to the curse, she has to, forever, or until MacBeth finally kills her to release them both from the curse. And she has too much pride to want to die at the hands of a sworn enemy.
Demona was always a flawed individual. Self motivated, selfish, willing to butt heads, shirks against authority, and doesn't allow herself to trust anyone, human or gargoyle. She was going to attack Katherine when Katherine openly insulted the gargoyles and would've if Goliath didn't hold her back. She kept on coaxing Goliath to take over from Hudson because she saw him as too old and too unfit for leadership. And she was probably always like that even before Goliath met her.
When she knew Goliath and she loved him, where they saw each other as eternal soulmates, it was really Goliath that allowed her to share her heart more to where she was a little bit more compassionate and considerate. And when Goliath was stuck in a permanent stone sleep until the spell was lifted, that was really when Demona lost all of that heart and compassion.
Because when Demona went back in time to encourage her younger self to join her in her vengeance, the younger Demona couldn't do it. Even when Demona proved what was going to happen, her younger self refused to join her, because Goliath showed her even the potential of something better. She believed in better with Goliath and was a better individual because of Goliath. It was her love for him once where she was willing to try to be better.
But all of that is gone now. Demona is no longer even the woman Goliath loved once. Where she hates even him because she changed. He didn't. He's still a good individual. She is not.

+Mrthe jayvion-It is very well established she always had a tenuous agreement with MacBeth to where she never entirely trusted him. She was always looking for any reason to sever their alliance, anything out of place, any wrong move, she was ready to betray him.
With that fragile of an alliance, her cooperation with the MacBeth family would never have lasted. If MacBeth's son had assumed the throne if everything went to plan, I don't think Demona would've taken too kindly to that. She had a tenuous trust of MacBeth but she clearly didn't hold any love or recognition for MacBeth's wife and son.
MacBeth's son would've assumed the throne when he was still relatively young. MacBeth probably would've asked Demona to respect him and honor him. But Demona would dismiss him as a nobody not worthy of respect and recognition. He wouldn't have what it would take to be a leader in her eyes. She would see him as unfit.
And MacBeth's family wasn't on the best terms with Demona and the gargoyles either where they didn't entirely trust her. They just respected MacBeth's decision on the matter. But once MacBeth stepped down from leadership, I don't think his son would've been as thrilled to keep up the alliance with the gargoyles.
And due to being young and not trusting the gargoyles, he would be too brash, too openly brazen around Demona. Try to show her who was boss, and she. . .wouldn't take kindly to that. Even if he was MacBeth's son. I think their alliance would've eventually shattered one way or another, because Demona wasn't willing to fully ever trust anyone.

This is perhaps the only villain in animation, that I actually feel really sympathetic to.
In her mind, she is doing the right thing for her and her clan. (Vader anyone) She lives in this "Half Truth" existence. Things have happened, by her hand or not, that has turned her eyes to this direction. There are several episodes that show this to be true. Then there is her own need to seek vengeance for what has happened to her in the past, as well as what has happened from her own hand. Honestly though, when one looks at several of the points where she is faulted (Destruction of her clan) she is only half to blame. Had she NOT conspired with the captain, they may have lived, or they might all be dust. No one would have survived.
With Macbeth, given her history, hearing that he would actually consider turning her over, is what put her over the edge into desertion and betrayal.
It is hard not to see her as anything more than a tragic character....whether by her doing or not.

If there was a trope that would accurately describe Demona, it would be the one: "Never My Fault" mixed with a *LOT* of "Fantastic Racism".
She blames Humanity for her own problems because of the overwhelming guilt and shame she would feel if she were to admit that her pride and mistrust caused the downfall of their race.
And her bitterness is the natural way vengeance goes after all: An endless cycle of hatred and misery, nothing more.
It's doubly ironic because she ends up becoming the very thing she despises: Human.

Luna Mai/ Mr Robin if u were to ask me there are no good or bad guys. It all depends on perspective, the situation, and what you believe to be right or wrong. In Demora's case she was more misguided than anything else. All she wanted was to help her kind but she just made things worse with her efforts. I don't blame her for that. No one can see the future. Her only problem is that she blames humans instead of owning up to her actions. Also if u ask me the best characters are the ones made out to be villains. They are the ones with he vision and dreams and don't give a damn about what people think about them. Then they act on those dreams. What people hate them for is killing and manipulating people but lets be honest everyone is going to die eventually. Those that fight for what they believe in and work to achieve their goals in a short life earn my respect

I always loved watching Demona carry out her painfully petty short sighted revenge plots that would always end up tanking her over arching goals. Part of me was always amazed my her strengths and the other part felt pity for her as her character flaws never allowed her to see the error of her ways. Then again if you betrayed the trust of your family and ended up killing them, would you come to terms with that? Her actions doomed her to a life without redemption. She should team up with Kratos! He knows a thing or two about short sighted revenge and screwing things up for everyone else.

What about Coldstone and Coldfire getting to meet their son, Gabriel, on Avalon? And I always pictured Coldsteel finding, and falling in love with his own new gargoyle love (if a female gargoyle would accept and love a robot, with a gargoyle soul, and yet, still the ability to heal himself, like as if her were flesh and blood, and he changed his attitude of aggession a bit). Then maybe he'd leave Colstone and Coldfire alone. But, correct me if I'm wrong, but, I once read information that said that, as Iago, (before he was shattered by the vikings) Coldsteel was banished from Goliath's clan for a while, but was later allowed back into the clan, so...was Coldsteel forgiven for something he did wrong in the past, as Iago? And is that why he was with the clan, when they were shattered? Because if Coldsteel would have been permanently banished from the clan, as a rogue gargoyle, on his own, you'd think he might have survived the massacre of the clan, and may have even met up with Demona again, later on, as Iago, and they might have even become a couple, due to both being fairly villain-like, although I don't think Colsteel was anywhere near as bad as Demona, although, he did try to help Demona and MacBeth destroy Goliath's clan, when he took control of Coldstone's body. By the way, was Coldsteel ever going to possibly be redeemed in the future? As I did see him pictured with the group, knowns as the "Redemption Squad" which consisted of Fang, Coldsteel, Dingo, Mattrix, and some other villains (hoping to see Demona in the group, which sadly, she was not)

If i have had a life like demona i had probably turned out the same way, i really feel sorry for her, she is filt whit anger and sorrow and guilt and that have darkened her soul. what sems like evil for other is justice for her. in a war the other side is alway the bad guy while their own side is the good one. its all upp to the perspective you look at it and what side have what you want or need and what youre goals are. If any one had hurt or mistreaded a clan i have been in or even killed them off i would want revenge to, for a gargoyl a clan is family so yust think on it would u ignore it if someone yust killed youre family or in her case it was more like her family got slaughtered unable to defend themself. And she also did know she would not be able to defend them. Even if she had warned them when she noticed it was to late for them to fly off and hide. i would guess it was her way to let them die in peace instead of in fear or in terror.

There are times that things don't go as planned. Neither she nor the captain of the guards knew that Hakon would destroy the other gargoyles while they were stone but I think that Demona did have a feeling something would happen so she hid herself on the beach away from the castle when the vikings attacked. It was partly her fault that both her clans was destroyed and even if her plan had worked, Goliath would have gone to rescue the humans anyway.

  • @arsas4556
    @arsas4556 8 лет назад +26

well to be fair, demona is right, humans did cause her suffering, had it not been for the way humans had treated her and other gargoyles, there is a good possibility that demona would not have gone down the path she went, yeah she did betray the castle to the vikings, but what motivated her to do it, the cruelty of humans, the creation of the hunter was unintentional, she was stealing food to survive, and humans were already persecuting gargoyles, had it not been for unjust persecution by humans, she would never had needed to steal and go into hiding, yeah she betrayed macbeth to canmor, but macbeth had presumably been considering to betray the gargoyles, when he said he considers all options, demona and other gargoyles were being persecuted and hunted by humans, had it not been for this persecution she would never had needed to betray macbeth and she betrayed him partly out of fear for herself and her new clan.
demona may have done terrible things that unintentionally harmed her, but she is not really entirely to blame. And she is right not just in her own mind, but right, somewhat in general, when you also consider her situation

Magneto ain't right, though, man. Prejudice will always exist, and combating it with more prejudice and violence doesn't solve anything. If mutants were the dominant species, the humans would be in the same boat the mutants are. Magneto fails to understand that we are all the same, and fall prey to the same demons. Look back at the LA riots. Because of the actions of one man (albeit a sign of a greater prejudice), the black community stuck out in hatred, and numerous innocents were needlessly and brutally murdered.
      Also, Mutants have superpowers.

You realize that Demona was alone for a bit after Goliath and co were frozen, hooked up with another clan, then screwed that up and was completely alone for almost 900 years.
