Probably the best music video that I've seen in years. Not a single bad moment in it. Ted, the Pharmacists, and Tom Scharpling killed it. All involved killed it, actually.
That moment when you're a big PFT fan and you were just watching this video to relax to some Ted Leo, and lo and behold, a surprise PFT literally bursts into the room.
Just saw on Earwolf that a new Comedy Bang Bang episode was released today starring Ted Leo and Paul F. Tompkins, but instead of listening I go on a Ted Leo binge instead....and in no time I'm seeing this vid for the first time. Ha! PFT is the best
People from Scharpling's "Best Show" or WFMU in the crowd: AP Mike (guy with all grey hair at 3:56), Terre T (woman wearing the black and white scarf at 4:34; notice AP Mike is also in the shot.) Did not spot Jon Wurster in the video.
paul f tompkins is always funny. love how he tries to get his point across by using a triple negative. and he messes it up too: "you cannot not not do it" means the same as "you cannot do it" no matter how much you waved your finger from left to right trying to follow your own line of thought :)
Of course this is great music, but I love the video. Paul F. Tompkins, Tom Scharpling, John Hodgman... I love how Ted is involved with the alt comedy scene. "He died because he didn't believe in the power of punk" haha. The end is great. I saw TL/RX last night and their performance is sorta similar to that musical.
And it's just now that I discover this video! Neat to see John Hodgeman in a cameo in this vid! Musicals and punk favorite things but what could go wrong? ;-)
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists,Tom Scharpling, Paul F. Tompkins, Julie Klausner, John Hodgman, Terre T, AP Mike, Therese, the guy from Titus Andronicus....am I missing someone?
The beach ball is pretty funny; I don't know if that's a thing, but the two Ted Leo shows I've been to both involved kids throwing beach balls on stage incessantly.
Um. WTF. How am I only JUST getting into these guys? I suck sometimes... I blame it on all the good music out there, it's hard to keep up sometimes. Good problem to have I suppose.
digthatfunk it's never too late. He just dropped a new record, which I sadly have not listened to yet. I was so saddened when he abruptly ended the pharmacists in 2010.
@ybrik222 No, the city. They played at this free concert the city hosts in the summer called "New Music Mondays", although this being in Chicago the musical would be fitting, no?
There is something about Reginald Van Vorst that reminds me of a certain wealthy lord of the London-based Lloyd-Webbers...but I cannot put my poor-person's thumb upon it.
@sewage666 I think he's not just targeting Green Day, but rather the whole movement of cheap Broadway shows in the vein of We Will Rock You, Rock of the Ages, and others that started with the lamentable Mamma Mia.
@sewage666 Did you just put "Ted" in quotations, as if to say, "If that IS your real name?!" Pretty awesome video. A good match with the Colleen video, making the 2nd video of the album absolutely and utterly ridiculous.
@amrichter357 the way GD made their money and money for Lookout seems more than fair. They honored a handshake deal and put up with years of, well, theft, basically. Livermore was gone in 97 i think and the label just kept screwing up until GD took their records back. This isn't at all like Butthole Surfers and Touch & GO or ....Trail of Dead and Merge. Lookout ran itself into the ground and screwed over all it's bands--just b/c GD could afford to let it happen doesn't make it okay.
@amrichter357 Lookout became a pretty poorly run label that wasn't paying its bands (Screeching Weasel, Avail, Neurosis, Pansy Division, Enemy You, Blatz, Filth, the Criminals, and the Riverdales all had problems getting royalty payments, too). Green Day had nothing to do with running Lookout into the ground... their music isn't something I'm interested in but they weren't responsible for keeping Lookout afloat.
"He died because he did't believe in the power of punk."
How many have we lost this way?
Cameo cut to a sobbing Patrick Stickles; priceless.
I have a screenshot of that scene as the background of my computer
Probably the best music video that I've seen in years. Not a single bad moment in it. Ted, the Pharmacists, and Tom Scharpling killed it. All involved killed it, actually.
a Tom Scharpling directed video making a joke about a snowboard musical years before Avalanche Bob. Incredible
Avalanche Bob RIP
That moment when you're a big PFT fan and you were just watching this video to relax to some Ted Leo, and lo and behold, a surprise PFT literally bursts into the room.
yea holy shit what the fuck
This was back in the day when PFT and Scharpling were friends.
The world really needs more Paul F. Tompkins.
This band deserves more recognition
im here cuz the seven universe movie sooo ig it got it lol
Well, having a flop on Broadway didn’t help things
This is the first music video I have watched in twenty years. Great job!
have you watched any in the past twelve since you've posted this comment? honestly curious
This song may stay with me my whole life.. I remember listening to Brutalist Bricks in Mexico and this song made sense
I love that QVC HD is on the TV in the background at the beginning.
Just saw on Earwolf that a new Comedy Bang Bang episode was released today starring Ted Leo and Paul F. Tompkins, but instead of listening I go on a Ted Leo binge instead....and in no time I'm seeing this vid for the first time. Ha! PFT is the best
"Take a whispering class!" PFT is the best!
I do believe that this is the coolest music video ever made. A very happy and fun video.
Thanks Mr. Leo and company.
Somehow I missed this in all it's amazingness. LOVE TED LEO!
TLRx were on Lookout when Green Day rescinded their rights to their debut album, forcing the label into bankruptcy. Nice, friendly dig.
Another cool song found through my love of Paul F. Tompkins. Awesome :)
This is great, especially having just seen Paul sing and do standup with Ted and Aimee Mann for their holiday show last week
They played this to perfection in Chicago last night!
this is the best video ever
Classic New Jersey era Best Show
Every part of this is great
Wasn't feeling this song when I first heard it but for some reason listening to it now makes me want to dance, lol
People from Scharpling's "Best Show" or WFMU in the crowd: AP Mike (guy with all grey hair at 3:56), Terre T (woman wearing the black and white scarf at 4:34; notice AP Mike is also in the shot.) Did not spot Jon Wurster in the video.
John Hodgman!
Such a good song.
Also, cameo from fellow NJan Patrick Stickles (Titus Andronicus) at 4:08, no?
just saw them tonight for the first time. truly mesmerising
Somehow missed this vid. Always happy to see PFT.
I need more music like this
paul f tompkins is always funny. love how he tries to get his point across by using a triple negative. and he messes it up too: "you cannot not not do it" means the same as "you cannot do it" no matter how much you waved your finger from left to right trying to follow your own line of thought :)
Paul F. Tompkins FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is that the guy from Titus Andronicus crying in the crowd at 4:07?
I think so
It definitely is.
It absolutely is
having loved this video for almost 10 years, I am only today realizing that the punk is wearing a cXa shirt. 💋👌
Lmao Patrick stickles crying in the crowd
Of course this is great music, but I love the video. Paul F. Tompkins, Tom Scharpling, John Hodgman... I love how Ted is involved with the alt comedy scene. @ultrashuai YES! Loved that!
An entire video taking the piss out of Green Day for killing Lookout! Records.
Love you boys.
I think he got an oscar for this performance.
Is it bad that the only reason I checked out this band was because I have a boss named Ted who happens to be a pharmacist? 😂
Omg! That is hilarious! I can't believe it. This is my favorite song of theirs. I hope you enjoyed it and told your boss about it!
I just said "Rich as Croesus! Like ancient Greece!" Then I showed this to my wife.
John Hodgman cameo! yay!
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists,Tom Scharpling, Paul F. Tompkins, Julie Klausner, John Hodgman, Terre T, AP Mike, Therese, the guy from Titus Andronicus....am I missing someone?
a) this is a total nod to yo la tengo's "sugarcube" video.
b) it f*cking rules.
such an underrated, under talked about band...
How did this become Ted Leo's most well known song? He has so many better ones
tuuuuuuune
I love green day but this is amazing
Simply, this song fucks!
Paul F. Tompkins? Didn't see that one coming.
The beach ball is pretty funny; I don't know if that's a thing, but the two Ted Leo shows I've been to both involved kids throwing beach balls on stage incessantly.
Take a whispering class!
that was fun, more, more...
Is that the guy from Titus Andronicus I see crying in the crowd?
Yes and his beard is even more fearsome in person
literally the last thing i was expecting was pft to open the door and then julie klausner shows up.
What are they watching on tv in the beginning?
4:02 😂😂😂😂
4:09 Patrick Stickles from Titus Andronicus :D
A parody of Green Day's broadway show, eh? lol :)
Um.
PC loves theatre.
this made me laugh soooo much. :D
@ybrik222 No, the city. They played at this free concert the city hosts in the summer called "New Music Mondays", although this being in Chicago the musical would be fitting, no?
paul f tompkins!
BLOOMFIELD REPRESENT!
GO BENGALS!
John Hodgman! And Patrick Stickles!
"whuu's thess guy?" TAKE A WHISPERING CLASS.
Wait... is that John Hodgman?
4:15 its Big D (Big D and the kids table)
Dear Paul F. Tompkins, lets make a music video together!!!
@GreatLakesDrifta
You mean the musical?
1:05 seems familiar
Is that Veronica Belmont at 3:16?
There is something about Reginald Van Vorst that reminds me of a certain wealthy lord of the London-based Lloyd-Webbers...but I cannot put my poor-person's thumb upon it.
He died because he didn't believe in the power of punk.
@sewage666 I think he's not just targeting Green Day, but rather the whole movement of cheap Broadway shows in the vein of We Will Rock You, Rock of the Ages, and others that started with the lamentable Mamma Mia.
@progmetalhead2112 yes it was
TAKE A WHISPERING CLASS
@ultrashuai I thought that's who that was!
Shallow
Didn't know Ted Leo owned an Alfa Romeo.
@sewage666
Did you just put "Ted" in quotations, as if to say, "If that IS your real name?!"
Pretty awesome video. A good match with the Colleen video, making the 2nd video of the album absolutely and utterly ridiculous.
Oh, man, you are so 100% right and it makes me sad. I try to spread the Ted Word but people just don't get it. Maybe it's "Intelligent People Music"?
@amrichter357 the way GD made their money and money for Lookout seems more than fair. They honored a handshake deal and put up with years of, well, theft, basically. Livermore was gone in 97 i think and the label just kept screwing up until GD took their records back. This isn't at all like Butthole Surfers and Touch & GO or ....Trail of Dead and Merge. Lookout ran itself into the ground and screwed over all it's bands--just b/c GD could afford to let it happen doesn't make it okay.
hahaha awesome
@GreatLakesDrifta
I meant the musical as in Ted Leo's musical. :P
this video basically insulted all types of people.
@progmetalhead2112 Yes.
damn i didn't know Chris Haslam was in a band
Chris haslem?? i found you!
...................my apartment doesn't smell
285 told the bartender they thought they were falling in love.
@sewage666 LA? This is entirely a New York deal.
he died because he didn't believe in the power of punk
NO WAY! CHRIS HASLAM!!!
Looking for A.P. Mike and Dudio. . . .
I found him!
Green Day satire.
just noticed the citizens arrest shirt

Paul F. Tompkins is God.
AWWW SHIT IT"S P. STICKS
