2:25 The way those guitar riffs start depicting ambulance sirens as Adrianne reaches the climax of the car accident is one of the most poetic, subtextual bits i've ever heard in a song. Close second is the spacey synths in UFOF.
Remember Hendrix at Woodstock playing the Star Spangled Banner while inventing sounds of the Vietnam war on his guitar. Like nothing else to invoke the shame of that war.
She was a shark smile in a yellow van She came around and I stole a glance in my youth A vampire Evelyn shown quiet as roses sting It came over me at a bad time But who wouldn't ride on a moonlit line? Had her in my eye, 85 down the road of a dead end gleam And she said woo Baby, take me And I said woo Baby, take me too It came over her at a bad time Riding through Winona down the dotted line Held us gunning out Ninety miles down the road of a dead end dream She looked over with a part smile Caught up in the twinkle, it could take awhile And the money pile on the dashboard fluttering As she said woo Baby, take me And I said woo Baby, take me too Evelyn's kiss was oxygen I leaned over to take it in As we went howling through the edge of south Des Moines It came over me at a bad time She burned over the double line And she impaled as I reached my hand for the guardrail Ooh, the guardrail Ooh, the guardrail And she said woo Baby, take me And I said woo Baby, take me too She said woo Baby, take me And I said woo Baby, take me too
I instantly thought of Bruce Springsteen when I heard the haunting way Adrienne Lenker sings this song. Then did some research and read that the band was listening to Nebraska during the recording of Capacity. Adrienne confirmed that Springsteen was indeed a huge influence for Shark Smile.
Years later and I still love this song every-bit each and every time I hear it. Adrianne Lenker ... my goodness, I can’t put my finger on it but her voice and her unusual, casual style effortlessly heaves layers of emotion.
You lost me at comparing them to Mazzy Star. They sound nothing alike and I'm glad cause BG is by far a much better band, and Adrianne is a great singer.
There's something about how great songs, songs that you just LOVE, you don't pick them, they pick you. That is this song, it never gets old and I want to restart it as soon as it's over.
Alex G is definitely up there. Both of these artists have some really great songs but I would agree that Alex G is probably one of the best artists around at the moment. He's so creative and he's able to switch styles so easily.
I remember when Mythological Beauty was released as a single, I was suuper excited about the new record, but I thought "This song is great, but I know something better is approaching". THEN they released this masterpiece (no, not THAT masterpiece.. That's a great track/record too), and I thought "Here it is. Before they even release the rest of the record, I know now that there's no way I could like any other song more than this." Still holds true. Great track from a fantastic record.
Ohhh the cacophony Is madness baby But It's all mine Whipping around like a downed power line Tingling and lonely but alive Alive to make new and fine But chosing too Go back threw time Crossing that double yellow line Behind the wheel with a part shark smile Driving into the sun Crisis point Solar storm Bringing it all Back home On a dead end road Tonight PS (This was whispered into my ear after seeing a flying vision of that nite Above the oxygen Over and over Again and again)
I don't really follow newer music made by newer bands anymore, but I like this song. I haven't found anything else on youtube by this band that I like as much as this song, but I hope they have a few more songs this good coming.
Their album Masterpiece is a masterpiece, it took me few listens to really get into it but its incredibly vulnerable and captivating. One of my favorite albums now.
Nunca pensé que esta canción me trairía nostalgia, Santi. Nos encantaba cantarla y escucharla juntos! Universidad, calle, escaleras, donde quiera sonaba pero juntos.
hermosa melodía de guitarra en el segundo coro ,, Buck Meek eres un maestro,, y Adrianne Lenker una voz que transmite sentimiento en tiempo real // beautiful melody of guitar in second chorus,, Buck Meek you are a master,, and Adrianne Lenker a voice that transmit feeling in real time.
j m I’m assuming Iowa, because they’re signed to Saddle Creek, which is in Nebraska, right next to Iowa. They play Omaha a lot, so maybe they were driving through Des Moines toward Omaha when this was written. This is just speculation

Damn... that's a beautiful observation
Also reminds me of the way Kendrick Lamar ends his first 2 verses on Sing About Me, Dying of Thirst
Remember Hendrix at Woodstock playing the Star Spangled Banner while inventing sounds of the Vietnam war on his guitar.
Like nothing else to invoke the shame of that war.
@@karengrosh3806 his tune
Machine gun is
It's exactly what your saying and much more friend
Check out machine gun by hendrix
at 2:38 a voice whispers softly “I’ll always love you” on the left channel, just beautiful
Amazing ear, been listening to this song for years and just found that.
not me going through a breakup and this being my favorite song since the breakup and now learning this. universe is crazy man
She was a shark smile in a yellow van
She came around and I stole a glance in my youth
A vampire
Evelyn shown quiet as roses sting
It came over me at a bad time
But who wouldn't ride on a moonlit line?
Had her in my eye, 85 down the road of a dead end gleam
And she said woo
Baby, take me
And I said woo
Baby, take me too
It came over her at a bad time
Riding through Winona down the dotted line
Held us gunning out
Ninety miles down the road of a dead end dream
She looked over with a part smile
Caught up in the twinkle, it could take awhile
And the money pile on the dashboard fluttering
As she said woo
Baby, take me
And I said woo
Baby, take me too
Evelyn's kiss was oxygen
I leaned over to take it in
As we went howling through the edge of south Des Moines
It came over me at a bad time
She burned over the double line
And she impaled as I reached my hand for the guardrail
Ooh, the guardrail
Ooh, the guardrail
And she said woo
Baby, take me
And I said woo
Baby, take me too
She said woo
Baby, take me
And I said woo
Baby, take me too
Cheers mate for the lyrics!
Thank you super human with human like offerings,we need more humane humans

All great songs possess a sense of urgency, as if the story cannot not be said. This is one f them.
I love that.
this is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard
The way the meaning of the chorus shifts from beginning to end kills me. Beautiful song 💔
Brilliant tune this. Song of the summer. Played it over and over and its not dead yet.
Years later and I still love this song every-bit each and every time I hear it. Adrianne Lenker ... my goodness, I can’t put my finger on it but her voice and her unusual, casual style effortlessly heaves layers of emotion.
Reminds me of a combination of Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Nicks
this is the best song i have heard in years
Oh my god! The guitar piece of the second chorus! Never heard anything like it! WOW!
Tim Warwick You would love War on Drugs then 👍
Absolutely right!! TWOD's are incredible!!
Like Kurt vile too!
Just discovered this band. Love them already. 21 people need to have another listen to this. It's a masterpiece.
Roy Wayne shut the he'll up
One might say… you saw the masterpiece, and she looked a lot like you? Wrapping her left arm around your right, ready to walk you through the night?
Awesome album cover pic of the amazing singer as a baby, in the arms of her uncle :-)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... wondered about that. I thought it was some teenage dad showing his angst of being a teenage dad.
@@geekymatt1382 lol same bro
And here I was thinking that's the lead singer all this time.
@@geekymatt1382 Me too! :)
@@SkyColl mee too! :)
just found this band and I'm in love. Her voice reminds me a lot of mazzy star with a bit more swagger.
galbas78 reminds me Ángel Olsen
That's exactly what I thought too!
Yep!! I thought it was at first
haha right?! i totally see it!

That happened to me, I've been listening to this on repeat all day.
I want to thank my son for bringing me to this song...it shows there's still some great music being made today
That solo gives me shivers in my stomach ❤
God this song hurts my heart every time I listen to it. Ooo, baby..... take me, and I said oo, baby, take me too...
Modern country. My Mother loved country when she got older. She had the best taste in everything.
An instant classic
Hannah McIntosh A Masterpiece
It's aight.
Best band right now.
Alex G is definitely up there. Both of these artists have some really great songs but I would agree that Alex G is probably one of the best artists around at the moment. He's so creative and he's able to switch styles so easily.

Instant post-depression post-post-post-everything classic
Doja Cat said in her Instagram Live that she loves this song, so here I am
This is the definition of a song that “SLAPS”.
bruh I love when I find Great Timeless music- I know I needed it
This gives me a mix of velvet underground and sunflower bean vibes... great track.
Too bad they don't write more songs like this. So far it's the only song I like from them, and it's a great song.
Doja has really amazing music taste 👌 I am proud to be one of her fans 💃
Woah I grew up in Minnesota and this song brought me right there before I knew what it was about.
Y’all know that Midwest winter deep feels
A Peach Pit interview brought me here, Absolutely amazing. Gonna stream this whole album.
Fucking awesome
You win again Saddle Creek! Respect Big Thief.
The same saddle creek as bright Eyes!
Dear Ms. Big Thief, this is a masterpiece. Thank you.
How can such sad song have súch a groove
reuireuiop0 Groovy. It’s groooooooovy
Just like Bad Moon Rising from Creedence, dark lyrics, upbeat melody 😁
Another one came to mind, Alone Again by Gilbert O’Sullivan, depressing lyrics, happy melody.
I love this song, it puts you the saddest smile in the world
Goosebumps and relaxation in one go… this one makes me smile every time it comes along (on several selfmade lists)
2 years later and this song still slaps.
Still the best song this AND last year. Holds you and breaks you at the same time x
this song is great therapy. could listen 2 it all night long. that fender guitar riff sends goose bumps across my back.
I heard this song in doja cats live
Me too
She is so eclectic

This just rocked my sack clean off.
i heard this song on a winter in a bar, in love
Ohhh the cacophony
Is madness baby
But It's all mine
Whipping around like a downed power line
Tingling and lonely but alive
Alive to make new and fine
But chosing too
Go back threw time
Crossing that double yellow line
Behind the wheel with a part shark smile
Driving into the sun
Crisis point
Solar storm
Bringing it all
Back home
On a dead end road
Tonight

Try Fontaines DC
And they have….
My adopted daughter looked just like that. She still does. Connects me with this song!
The guitar reminds me a lot of Neil Young, especially his song Hurricane.

This is the comfiest music in existence.
Perfect soft but fast beat and haunting melody. Lesbian tragedy story for extra bonus (at least on the surface). What a great song.
