Chain Smoke was my favourite MTB movie for so long . Watched every day got me so pumped to ride. I still ride today listening to some of the tracks on the movie. 👊👊👊👊
When I got into MTB like in 2007 the cloth were so ugly. Everything was like full of skulls and "Ride or die" kind of stuff. Today everything is more subtle and feels really evolved. After all clothing is still fashion in my mind. No matter the sport
On that note, in my opinion Syndicate had the best looking kit this past season and they kept switching it up, which I like. Yet, without looking at the bike, you would still always know there is a Syndicate rider coming by, because it had that specific style just with different colors and wild patterns. 🌈
It’s all subjective. Frankly, the last couple points matter. Designs need to develop MASS APPEAL. That’s where the real cash is (though that comes with risk) Lifestyle brand elevation. I’m surprised Fox hasn’t tried its hand on this, especially with its elevated pricing. Could fit a collection/series alongside mid-premium or luxury brands with some big designers coming aboard.
Safety equipment is generally a good idea. But you don’t need motocross inspired race jerseys that are covered in ostentatious designs and logos to enjoy mountain biking, just clothes that are comfortable enough to ride
looking good = feeling good and I believe it translates to performance. Maybe be a mental thing, but the mental game is real, as well as physical health of course.
Fox kit has slipped a lot, poor quality, excessively high prices and terrible colour combinations, all of which looks 💩 on a wet and windy trail in Yorkshire.
I've been MTBing since 1990 at 14 years old . I still own a 1992 Kona Hei Hei Titanium bike and a 1998 Specialized M4 S-Works. Both of these bikes are top speced for the time period, but as soon as I bought my first 29er , I wanted nothing to do with them. They now both have non aggressive tires on them as I use them for city/rail trail riding on a rare occasion. The Kona Hei Hei , ironically, is worth $1800-$2200 as it's a rare and collectible bike.
We need to bring back the moto gear, I still wear old fox racing moto gear when I ride and feel super comfortable in it, most importantly though I think it just looks way better.
All the younger guys on my trail spot wear kneepads, jeans and a hoody and helmet, some with chest and back protector and I kinda like it cuz it looks more casual not as serious as a full kit
Interesting. In the early 1970's we were riding steep technical trails on our Schwinn Varsity's with the handlebars turned up.......Not sure they had even invented bike helmets, let alone knee or elbow pads.
@@ernestfrigelj2876 I was just remembering how crazy we were. I absolutely advocate for people to wear full gear every time out. Myself - elbows, knees, gloves and full-face helmet along with goggles. Thanks for the opportunity to clarify.
I agree. I don’t like the skinny jean style pants they wear and tight jerseys. Basically just one step from Lycra. They need to bring back the old moto style, the aerodynamics really don’t make a big difference in their times. There are much bigger factors that contribute to their times than what they wear. I think that’s just an excuse because they like wearing tight clothes now
@@MTNMAX88 slim fitting kits do make a difference for racers. I believe GMBN did a video with a windtunnel a couple months back, go give it a watch might change your mind. I mean us average joe don't need it but who doesn't want to go faster downhill?? you don't have to buy mtb specific clothing but slimmer fitting generic brand outdoor kit can get it done.
hoped that I would see a better timeline of how was our sport changing, but skipping about 10 years of evolution makes me sad. But it was good advert to new comfortable protections.
Not into the skin tight kit. Give me loose and comfy. I like some Fox gear but their prices are insane, quality and sizing so so and their return policy is horrible. Buying end of season sale through other online sources is the way.
What have I been doing? I don’t wear any pads and the only protection used is a helmet and sunscreen. If you’re wearing all that shit you had better be sending it to the moon.
This is far from the standard I would like to see a Pinkbike Original content. It is just a Fox advertising. And as such it is bitter and sad to see, how less Fox take care of the own history and the sports history and the great athlets, that used Fox or other MX kits way before 1996. For exampe in 1994 raced Jake Watson from Team Marin in full Fox MX gear. Not only once. He did at the first Grundig World Cup and other occasions. He was a well published rider and role model for DH in the US. Some print magezine, what was the most influential media back then, made a how to ride downhill doubble page showing him in Fox MX gera. As far as I could find out, Fox was a supporter or sponsor of Jake. That Palmer changed Peatys mind about his dress code is a fine story. That Napalm changed a sport forever but we are going back ist an oximoron. Its not forever. And it was far from changing the whole sport. The sport changed Palmer. At his last World Champs in Are Sweden, he ended on the floor in the very last corner. Just meters away from the finish line. The iconic photos of that moment showing him in wearing lycra.
What is this nonsense? If there is anything that makes mountain biking look tacky and chavvy, it’s the clothing sold by Fox and Troy Lee Designs, as well as the energy drink logos. The motocross kit at 1:30 looks absolutely ridiculous, more so than the kit at 0:18. Anyway, you could have made a video about the importance of safety equipment without trying to pretend it’s alternative and “cool”. 🤦♂️
That was the style back then. The palm and missy brought corporate sponsors and the big money to the industry. The true rock stars of the sport. Everyone racing had fox kit in the late 90s. Then sombrio and other brands started to take over. TLD is still one of my favorite kits
I don't wear moto gear except boot and full face, on the nastiest of enduro rides, I meant on my motorcycle. Find me gear you don't feel I'll buy it. 😂

I’m old. Lightweight cargo shorts and a t shirt. All the pads, knee, elbow, chest protector. Gloves. All of it.
43 year old here , last month i went down at a hairpin switchback downhill , knee first into a rock while wearing poc vpd 2.0 ....i felt nothing

Ofc but thats the history of the DH and gravity mtb and it should be respected as in any other sport

It would of been dope to have had a Shaun Palmer interview in this set.
Presumably not sponsored by Fox
David Hasselhoff reunited Europe in 1995?!?!?!

Same here. I lend my Canondale to tight fisted newbs. I’m so impressed they can ride gnarly trails on it. I do not want to at all

Gee, I really enjoyed this one! Super interesting with super cool people. Nice job!!
Awesome bit of cool info!!! Great job
Fox should just start making more understated gear if they want to appeal to a wider customer base
Should have had Cathro on to talk about THAT skin suit at Fort William!

Exactly. And that’s what this video is intended to combat, although in an awkward way that will probably have the opposite effect
Amazing respect of Peaty to get "Palmer" tattooed across his guts

No mention of Ben Cathro in the skin suit? Shame. 😂
Wade Simmons and Josh Bender changed mtb more than racers. Redbull Rampage is still the most viewed event in mtb 20+ years later.

No one thinks that tight kits look undifferentiated from xc
No. I do not think long sleeve / pant kits over pads look the same as XC racers in shorts and short sleeve shirts

I’m not into the tight clothes they wear now, they look like hell. They’re not going fast enough for the aerodynamics to make a marketable difference.
