Flow is usually built with big manicured berms and smooth entries and run outs. I think Brendan wasn't able to flow as much as many of the others because of his less manicured and tighter raw lines. This all comes down to us, the viewers, wanting to see rugged raw freeride or smooth manicured slopestlye lines. There are enough slopestyle competitons so let's get Rampage back to it's freeride roots and get the smooth wide freeways off the mountain.
Totally agree, these two just ride the autobahn each year. 3 guys building an original line don't have the time to make it 3m wide all the way down so of course they'll be some stalling
I mentioned that before, pulling tricks is the part of rampage since first 360 has been done. It's more and less obvious, that what has been enough for last year wouldn't be enough today. It is what it is and for me it's still rampage, not that raw as on begging, but perhaps more exciting. And btw there is a big difference between pulling tailwhip on the slopestyle bike and full suspension
I fully agree. Brendogs line was raw and that is what people wanted to see! Can you imagine a backcountry snowboard line drop or chutes all manicured. I get in MTB there is a need but takes away from RAW sick line. Brendog all the way!
Some very good points here but I think it’s also really important to also remember that his line was almost totally unique and not shared by other riders and dig teams also they didn’t combine sand bags with other crews either…. Which should be part of the score and competition! Otherwise why not just have unlimited sand bags and as many people digging as you want…. And let’s face it Zink and Strait basically team up every year so they basically double there dog crew and sand bags which I think is a lot of fans big argument as to why Bren got screwed as almost the true spirit of rampage! It wasn’t a winning run though but he should have gotten a lot more points for actually creating the majority of his line with just his dig crew and limited sand bags….
i agree. his line was 100% unique with no shared features at all, whereas everyone else was sharing multiple parts of their run. kinda sucks that a freeride contest isn't rewarding freeriding
His line was creative but the way he rode it didn't stand out, Semenuk steezy style made him stand out more. You can see other athletes just rode their line with tricks or with difficulty, but Semenuk rode his line with style throwing dust and plowing dirt.
@brandonreimer184 I'm not talking about the tricks he did I'm talking about how he rode his way down, You got to be those type of person who only see tricks and features and not the whole riding.
Well I didn't tune in to see a slope style event but I got one. Brendogs run stood out because it was in the broad sense mountain biking and relatable.
Though I do believe his placement should have been higher than 11th. I do appreciate this in depth look and analysis. I see where Cam and Kyle are coming from when they are comparing runs. Cool to see what they are looking at from their abilities and experience
Totally. I definitely didn't feel he deserved the win, but 11th is just like, is it Big Mountain Freeride or Slopestyle? He gave a turd if it's Slopestyle, 11th makes sense. But Freeride? I'd put him maybe 5th. I'd have gived TVS the win, that frontie was massive.
This was probably the most objective breakdown of the run with some really cool rider insight. I feel he should have scored higher, and while I might not agree with a couple of the takes, I respect their position. They didn't sound condescending, and really tried to relate to the viewer experience too. Nicely done 🤘
I think the people are pissed because tech riding that isn’t perfectly smoothed out take offs and landings landscaped to perfection is a different game then crawling into raw loose marble rocks. We all know as mountain bikers that can be so difficult because one slip or pedal catch or rut catching a wheel is so much different then going off a smooth as silk lip or flat drop to smooth landing. The tech needs more respect at Rampage even though the audience of people who don’t ride love to see bar spins and backflips.
For me it depends on if it’s a slope style contest or gnarly free mountain riding - I like both I considered it free riding - up until this year which was more slope style imo I put Brendog around 5th
These guys are admitting you couldn't do those huge tricks without big manicured landings. But, a minute later saying Brendon was showing hesitation. His approaches and ladings were way sketchier than everyone else. He landed the back flip on the canyon gap which had the smallest landing of all the jumps that were back flipped that day. I know these tricks are super dangerous, but these guys will land these tricks all day. The only guy who was really pushing himself with tricks was Tom Isted, and he crashed multiple times that week and walked away fine. So are those tricks really that dangerous for these guys? The most dangerous trick in my opinion was the back flip over the canyon, if you don't make it you're finished. Also he never practised that, so according to these guys, the judges should score it higher because is was unexpected. Most people don't think he should have won. But he deserved better.
There were bigger canyon gaps that were also step downs, unless he completely mis judged his speed and came short it's basically a big table. Gravity on a step down drop puts way more force into the landing which means way more consequence when it goes wrong. Most of the big injuries at rampage have been on the big drops going wrong and hitting the ground with insane force. Overshooting Brens canyon is much less consequence than even slightly overshooting a step down or flat drop. Lad science will confirm this. Also he did practice flipping the canyon. They also worked on the hillside after the canyon to smooth it out incase he went big or needed it to slow and turn right. No one hates Bren he's a fan favorite for a reason. Completing rampage runs and racing world cups is something only a few have ever done!
Theres alot of comments touching on the fact it felt more slopestyle then freeride and i tend to agree all runs although different have a very similar feel and it was great to see bren do something different taking freeride back to some roots. People want to see 10 riders given a mountain and be told make your way down as creative as possible without sharing lines or having big manicured lips and berms we want raw lines. A group of riders working on a course happens in other comps it isnt needed here it takes away from the rawness that is rampage. Dont get me wrong huge props to all riders not a single line wasnt anything but epic but it just doesnt feel like rampage anymore
Nobody including Brendan and his diggers think he should've won. He was absolutely under scored though. Cam definitely couldn't bring himself to say that though. The discussion should've been was the run only a 76. In the end it would be so good if the other riders were stoked on someone doing something different, risky, hard to build and creative in a comp. So funny they said they could've basically ridden their lines when they got there. Brendan and his crew out there making features.
I liked hearing Zink and Strait's perspective. They both are seasoned very high level riders whom have a lot of experience and knowledge riding Rampage. Thank you for sharing
Sure. Let's all roll over to authority. That's what mountain biking is all about. He felt robbed to me and tens of thousands of other viewers, but what do we know.
Great to see Cam and Kyle (my son's favourite rider, he loves to wear his KS Dharco shirt) review Brendon's line. I think they're very fair and make good points. Would love to see them (or other riders) critiquing other Rampage lines and runs. I think Bren and his team get a lot of fan support because of their build videos. Fans are then disappointed because they see a low score for a lot of hard work and gnarly, dirty lines.
Well explained, and really appreciate their input. Given almost everyone is riding their same lines as previous years. I do find it peculiar that Brendog got a much higher score last year -- With a lessor version of this years line.
They missed the whole point that a lot of people don’t want to see it another slopestyle event! Cam and Kyle seem biased towards their own vision of Rampage.
Every Judge was from North American and mates of these pair! Also his helmet sponsor didn't fit the politics. 2.58 minutes for complete run and judges scores. Unlike everyone else who got at least 5 minutes
Pierre Edourd Ferry dude - check out some of his runs at past rampages you will be impressed. The list of non red bull winners is long also including the 2 guys in this video. Quit echoing stupid comments and look into things a bit
All the Rampage judges really need to do is make the whole thing transparent. Let people know what criteria they judge on and which citeria got which score (and why). People -myself included- don't understand how Brendog got 11th with a run like this and the audience seems to value different things than the judges. At which point we could also ask ourselves: Who is this event for? Is it for entertainment of us, the viewers? Or are we just bystanders?
At a certain point, when every rider’s lines are so similar, I don’t even want to tune in to the event - I’d rather just have a highlight reel. A ton of riders doing a top-to-bottom on day 1 or day 2 doesn’t seem too rampage to me. And the thought that flow is scored higher than technicality is backwards for me. If someone in this comp has to slow down for a feature it means it’s fkn gnarly
I just think the judges are judging based on criteria that aren't that important to the viewers. The judging should encourage lines like Brendan's, that's what we all want to see. You could judge based on the athlete's shoe size and that would be fair in the sense that it's an objective criterion to judge by, but nobody would watch it because nobody cares about that. We wanna see cool stuff and gnarly lines.
Ive seen the RedBull reps offer Max Fredrickson a Red Bull can , he just pointed at his helmet and shook his head, happens more often than you think/ also great pod, how is this the first time i have heard you? thanks from Adelaide

I think the thing that gets missed here is that Brendan's run is probably not a winner. 11th place may not be fair but that's not really the issue at hand. I think the issue is that people at home see what they interpret as riders building a massive slope style course and running it. Where 90% of their line appears tot be wide, smooth, manicured flow. Sure it has massive consequences and some of the biggest stuff definitely deserved to win. But I don't think the fans at home are as excited to watch a big slope style as they are to watch someone ride the face of a cliff. Also, the biggest stuff is so far beyond what most people watching can even comprehend that it loses effect. I think the event could also benefit from finding some way to film this stuff that puts it all into context because the current methods do it no justice.

People didn't even talked about having groomed jumps some people even said bring back wood features and now they shutting on having groomed jumps imagine that
Rampage needs to go back to the drawing board. Make it free ride again, no more 20 foot wide groomed lines with perfect takeoffs and landings. It shouldn’t be totally obvious where their lines are while watching.
Maybe the judges should just wait until everyone has riden then score , if you warch the pov of brendans run vs tyler mc caul vs reed boggs you know with doubt the scoring is terrible
I do think scoring should be clearer and it was a lower score than deserved, not winning but definitely low I want to see all the stuff and everyone be rewarded, clear sections for each points, and why wouldn’t the judges put something out to explain if people were booing? I’d like to see a public vote or the riders vote each other, no one would have a complaint if all the riders got together and voted for the best (not being able to vote for themselves)
Claw put out a video, did last year as well. Cool to see Zink and Strait giving there thoughts on all the runs. It would be cool if all the riders judged post event without being able to score themselves and see how it stacks up.
Hmm, don’t think they should be judging his run seems a bit disrespectful to Brendog! Are they going to judge every other rider, not really sure it’s the done thing? Don’t really know why I clicked on the video, I won’t be watching that shit again! I like Gypsy Tales, I meant Rampage!
Both of you are (turned into) slopestyle riders and Rampage was supposed to be a freeride event... would like to see you (and the juges) ride Brendogs line.
Rampage has gone too slopestyle for me. If the judging isn't taken back to actual freeride judging they will lose a lot of viewers. Only reason I watched was for the free ride lines, which there wasn't many, not a big slopestyle line like the majority of the riders had. It's getting ridiculous with how manicured the lines are, it's not free ride anymore.
If you'd read my comment correctly I was on about the manicured lines... That's simply not freeriding, I get building a kicker here and there throughout the line make it better, but when the majority of the line is as smooth as a slopestyle comp it's no longer freeride for me and many others I'd assume
Flow is usually built with big manicured berms and smooth entries and run outs. I think Brendan wasn't able to flow as much as many of the others because of his less manicured and tighter raw lines.
This is just part of a full video where they discuss other runs plus other stuff
TVS was robbed
This is great insight for us armchair watchers.
Brens was definitely better than Kyle’s, tommy g and storch that’s a no brainer
Rampage should be freeride, not just another slopestyle event
Crack on and let's see how good you'd go 😂 . Anyone could set there BUt try it and let's see how you get on 😂😊
Haterade much?
Both of you are (turned into) slopestyle riders and Rampage was supposed to be a freeride event... would like to see you (and the juges) ride Brendogs line.
Rampage has gone too slopestyle for me. If the judging isn't taken back to actual freeride judging they will lose a lot of viewers. Only reason I watched was for the free ride lines, which there wasn't many, not a big slopestyle line like the majority of the riders had. It's getting ridiculous with how manicured the lines are, it's not free ride anymore.
Yeah because backflips , frontflips and 360s off 50ft+ cliffs is slope style
Cmonn on not one thing slopestyle about it
If you'd read my comment correctly I was on about the manicured lines... That's simply not freeriding, I get building a kicker here and there throughout the line make it better, but when the majority of the line is as smooth as a slopestyle comp it's no longer freeride for me and many others I'd assume
Sponsored by AG1. Nearly as bad as the scoring
Slimmy justification, you got it wrong as usual, American event for Americans, world series that never leaves the states
Mi
on ya go then min ride his line if ya have the balls
Thank you. Should calm some fanboys, me included, down
@brendog1 got robbed again!!😾🙀👎🏻
Ask nicholi if this is crankworx.
