A great man, he may rest in peace
I’m happy to be an individual… I am proud of who I am - the thought that I am supposedly an extension of others , considering what I have observed, no I am me !
I rather argue the physical world is itself an illusion. Reality is a dream and we are one consciousness fragmented, spinning the story that has become "reality." Once you see past the veil, there is no going back.
Then what are we? Dangerous.
Woah edgy
Where is this material that makes up the nervous system? Is it the gluons and if so, what are they made of? Please, locate this material, and then Dennet (RIP) we will take this attitude of yours to work. Until then, this material reality you posit remains theoretical.
Are you implying that conciseness does not reside in the central nervous system? Do you posit that consciousness is, or resides in, a nonmaterial ghost such as an Atman or soul? Can you devise a way to test your theory?
There is plenty of evidence that consciousness is a product of the nervous system. Do a little searching and read results from respected institutions.
Did you mean to say neurons? Because the nervous system is made of neurons 😂
Hume and Dennett make it seem like it took western philosophy 2,000 extra years to catch up to Buddhism.
Has nothing to do with buddhism or any spiritual crap
@@thenacregod I’m not talking about the religious aspects. Dennett, in another interview says that his ideas on the self - no Cartesian theatre, the illusion of consciousness etc. match up with the philosophical Buddhism. That’s like their main thing they got right. Western philosophy took literal ages to catch up.
Edit: thx for the uploads btw.
@@thenacregodThe type of Buddhism called Zen or Chan is neither spiritual nor crap. Some other forms vary from spiritual crap to religious nonsensical super crap.
I like the summary of Buddhism which goes "Sit Down and Shut Up." That is to say it is something to be done and experienced, not a set of dogmatic beliefs.
Zen Buddhism agrees with what the late, great Mr Dennit is saying here.
Dennett is a tragicomic figure in my opinion.
He took materialism as far as one can, ie too far - to the point of transparent absurdity (objects without a subject); all while maintaining a monstrously incoherent notion of neuropsychological “free-will”.
He was on the latter side of the old idealism(consciousness) versus materialism debate, and didn’t say anything deeply new.
Both philosophies are just the two poles of Realism (our instinctive intellectual error) and are subsumed by Transcendental Idealism.
The tragicomedy is similar to how Bryan Magee described Bertrand Russell as having exhausted his life’s work by arriving at the erroneous end of Empiricism, which is the mere starting point of Kant’s corrective work, which was completed 200 years prior.
🤦♂️
So you're saying if another man punches me in the gut . . . that's not real pain I'm feeling ????? OK then. What's the magic trick i'm missing out on. Bad example ??? Maybe i said something that ticked him off. My fault. OK Let's say i'm walking on the street in a bustling USA city. Someone jumps me from behind. Knocks me down. And takes my wallet. Oh another bad example ???? What did i do to deserve that ????????? That's not MY experience ????? I'm simply living it all in my head. Interesting. I must be one of the world's losers then. No fixing that . . . eh ????
Correct.
@@jessewallace12able who the f*ck are you ??? A comedian ???
If I am not me then what am I ….. no I stand by me !
I think he's a bit off but not completely, being a pessimist, determinist and antinatalist myself. In SOME way the pain is real, but the feeling of "self" and "identity" are only there because of the survival instinct. You (and me) are only meat that *thinks* that it is an individual.
@@francisdec1615 so you are not you … you a slave to a system which dictates everything even if it challenges you very ethical and moral compass… sounds life control through fear.
No one thinks that..😂
Not referring to retards like yourself
