I just finished Margaret the First and I LOVED it! So glad you had so many great books this year! Also, rewatching your tattoo video I just want to say that I have felt the same way exactly my whole life. There is a line in Margaret the First that sums it up for me... “I seem to live in the world but also outside of it.”
You are always so eloquent that you "convince" me to read all the books that you love! Wives and Daughters is one of my favourites books of all time. I love Loungbourn too. Happy New Year!
I was so happy to see you mentioned The Strays as one of your favorites. I just heard about this book this month and checked it out on Overdrive. I'm just getting started but looking forward to it even more now. I have The Night Watch selected as a favorite to buy on my Nook. I'll make sure it lands on my TBR for 2018!🤗
Hehe, thank you! I'm discovering more and more that you and I tend to have very similar taste in fiction. (Less so in nonfiction unless I can convince you to start picking up lots of books on BIRDS.)
Longbourn and If We Were Villains were already on my wish-list, but I added Margaret the First since I saw it on your channel and I just added Wives and Daughters!! Thanks for your videos, they are always great!! xx
It's settled i'm reading Longbourn in January and I added the Strays to my TBR so thanks for the rec! I want to read more Gaskell in 2018 (have only read North & South and loved it) so it makes me happy that Wives & Daughters was your #1. Great list!
Longbourn, loved that book. I too was a servant, we were called staff in the late 90's, spent 8 years with a wonderful family as a housekeeper. Jo Baker captured the relationships between servant and family so accurately. I actually read this before Pride and Prejudice and it gave my a different perspective. Started Margaret the First today. Thanks I enjoy your channel.
I hope you can create a recommendation vid of books with art in it or it as a central theme. Sort of the goldfinch-ish? Btw I just found your channel and so far I loved your reviews!
After you've spoken about all of these books I literally want to read them all.....to big of a TBR now. Thanks for sharing your favs! Think I'll pick up The Strays first :)
I looooove Sarah Waters but haven't read The Night Watch yet, must get to that one soon. The only other of hers I haven't read is Affinity. And I agree - we need MOAR BOOKS from her. I have Wives and Daughters on my TBR case solely because of your praise for it earlier this year. Now that I know it was your favorite book of the year, I'm definitely going to try to get it soon!
Yay! Probably my most anticipated video of yours! I bought Margaret the first after your tattoo video and I was absolutely blown away! And yes, Sarah Waters needs to publish more! I'm getting withdrawals :D The rest of your list has winged its way to the top of my tbr. Great list. Happy new year :)
I'm reading If We Were Villains right now and I LOVE it so far--I feel like it really hasn't gotten enough attention for how good it is. I also read Sweetbitter last year and loved it; I've seen so many negative reviews that it was nice to see someone else who was a fan. I've got The Strays on my TBR for 2018. Great video!
Oh my, I'd like to read all of these books now. I have Longbourne long neglected in my TBR, glad to hear such good things about it. I've heard of Wives and Daughters of course but it wasn't really on my radar, but now of course it must be.
Great list, Olive! I am actually starting “Fingersmith” today and it’s my first Sarah Waters, so your video made me really excited for it. I also have “The Strays” and “The Interestings” on my TBR and looking forward to them. OK WAIT A SECOND, Better than The Secret History? I need to pick that book up.
I loooved The Glorious Heresies, and the sequel, but both for different reasons which was fascinating for me. I'm glad to see it on your end-of-the-year list! I also have several of Sarah Water's books to read in 2018 too. I looove WW1/2 fiction, especially when it's more domestic in setting than military, and I've heard so many good things about her so I'm excited to read them. Hope you have a lovely New Year! :)
Great list and of course I'm adding that Elizabeth Gaskell to my 2018 TBR. I need to read more of the classics but also, your favorite book of the year is a must-read!
I've set it as a goal for myself to read all of Sarah Waters' novels this year (three left), so you might me really excited to get to the Night Watch first! And yes, I really want more books by her too! I also need to read Longbourn, because it sounds like I really need to have read a book like that, when also reading so many classics from only the higher classes' pov! Happy new year to you! I hope you'll find another favourite, like Gaskell's novel, in 2018!
Two of my favourite reads this year were recommended by you, The Tzar of Love and Tecno and City of Thieves, and I have high hopes for The Ecliptic that I saw once in you channel and I already bought, so I can't wait to get my hands on Tuesday Nights in 1980!
Oh that's so awesome! I'm thrilled you liked them. I hope you enjoy the other two - I was just recently trying to push my husband to read The Ecliptic. I think about that book all the time.
Note to self: Freaking read Gaskell and Waters in 2018, Gemma, why don't ya!? Great list, Olive ^^ Year-end lists are the best and I'm already sad for them to end.
Yes so hard to Wives and Daughters. I was blown over by that book and am seriously looking forward to rereading it in the future. So many books here I own and keep meaning to read so they’re definitely now on the top of my pile!
The Strays was one of my absolute favorite books from this year. I checked it out from the library solely based on the cover( it's so pretty!!!) and absolutely devoured it! My only complaint is that I wish it were longer!
I've heard good things about /If We Were Villains/ from numerous sources, and it seems like it'll go well with a few other Shakespeare-themed books I plan on reading together. Still gotta read Rabid first though, since I've had this hydrophobic dog juxtaposed with Dracula's castle on my shelf, both staring expectantly at me for some time now. (And as far as Marg I and "oddity is fodder for talk:" I can seriously sympathize with that statement's sentiment, and I hope I find some snippet as symbolic of my own sense of alienation to tattoo on myself someday)
Please tell me you've seen the BBC adaptation of Wives and Daughters from 1999?? It's SO GOOD. Also, thank you for gushing about Longbourn earlier this year - it was one of my favourites this year too!
Read longbourn love it very interesting I have wives and daughters had for along time havnt got around to reading but I watched the BBC series more haha!! I love your videos you made books sound good to read haha!!
I FUCKING LOVE THE GLORIOUS HERESIES OH MY GOD uggghhh I love ittttttt. It’s a book that definitely gets stuck in your head, as you said, and I love it more after having some distance to think about it. Screw the depiction of Ireland as this peaceful rolling green hill utopia, The Glorious Heresies is such an important part of contemporary Irish literature and it shows what a gritty and shitty place it can be. I’m really excited to get to the second book in 2018!
Pride and Prejudice was one of my favorite books this year. I will definitely have to check out Longborn. TYSM Olive.

Your taste is gold and I love the way you describe books. Thanks for another year of videos :)

I've put The Night watch to the top of my 2018 TBR pile - I have had it for ages but not got around to reading it - you've inspired me x
your taste in books are absolutely in line with mine. I love your content so much!
Same!
Thanks for the recs as always! Margaret the First is one of my favs of the year too :)

Excellent list! Wives and Daughters is a classic I have been wanting to read for awhile and your glowing review certainly moves it up the list for me.

Hadn't heard of before, and really interested in, "If We Were Villains" - sounds SO good! Loved hearing about your favorites!
I'm reading If We Were Villains right now and I LOVE it so far--I feel like it really hasn't gotten enough attention for how good it is. If We Were Villains definitely hasn't been hyped nearly enough. I'm so happy you're loving it! I had such an amazing time reading it.
Ooh, Margaret the First seems especially interesting, must read that. Many awesome sounding additions to my tbr, thank you!

Hello from Brazil! I really loved your list and took some notes for my tbr list :)
You have sold me on Tuesday Nights in 1980. I am fascinated by synesthesia and this sounds fantastic!
Well I just added most of these to my tbr, aha. I'm really looking forward to Longbourn in particular. Happy new year :)
I loooved The Glorious Heresies, and the sequel, but both for different reasons which was fascinating for me. I'm glad to see it on your end-of-the-year list! I also have several of Sarah Water's books to read in 2018 too. I cheered audibly when I heard your number one pick of the year 😄😄😄 I'm so so glad you enjoyed it!!
It's all thanks to you!! Thank you for singing her praises or else I don't know that I ever would have been inspired to pick up this wonderful book!
I've set it as a goal for myself to read all of Sarah Waters' novels this year (three left), so you might me really excited to get to the Night Watch first! And yes, I really want more books by her too!

Great wrap up. Love the new glasses

Great list, Olive ^^ Year-end lists are the best and I'm already sad for them to end.
I just love to hear you speak. Happy new year Olive💖
Yes so hard to Wives and Daughters. I was blown over by that book and am seriously looking forward to rereading it in the future. So many books here I own and keep meaning to read so they’re definitely now on the top of my pile!
Yay Wives and Daughters!!!! I love that book as well. If you're interested, BBC has a really nice adaptation. Great video! Happy New Year!
+Elemar Living I've watched it several times! I'm obsessed 😂
The Strays was one of my absolute favorite books from this year. I checked it out from the library solely based on the cover( it's so pretty!!!) and absolutely devoured it! My only complaint is that I wish it were longer!
I love your videos! I am definitely going to check these books out. Thank you!
Thank you! I hope you enjoy them :)
The Strays is beautiful. The Melbourne bohemian setting is delightful.
I can't believe I've still not read any Sarah Waters! 2018! I also really want to read The Glorius Heresies.
I got Tuesday Nights in 1980 because of you and cannot wait to read it!
+BetweenLinesAndLife Yay! I hope you enjoy it 😊
I bought If We Were Villains because of how much you loved it and I cannot wait to read it
I will be waiting next to my computer impatiently until you post a video talking about it.
hehe
Tuesday Nights in 1980 and Longbourn both sound like really interesting books I'll have to look into
I've heard good things about /If We Were Villains/ from numerous sources, and it seems like it'll go well with a few other Shakespeare-themed books I plan on reading together. You always speak so eloquently about the books you have read.
I agree, I also prefer If We Were Villains to The Secret History!
I FUCKING LOVE THE GLORIOUS HERESIES OH MY GOD uggghhh I love ittttttt. Screw the depiction of Ireland as this peaceful rolling green hill utopia, The Glorious Heresies is such an important part of contemporary Irish literature and it shows what a gritty and shitty place it can be. I’m really excited to get to the second book in 2018!
spotted; some Australian lit, but where is the Russian lit? :P
Again someone who loved The Mill on the Floss :'D Haha I hated that book. And find it interesting how many on book tube like it
I've never read Sarah Waters, I must read some in 2018...
I LOLed when you made an appeal to Sarah Waters XD
+annapotpot I mean...she's sure to see this plea & take action, right? RIGHT?! 😩😩😩
Wow! Margaret I is not your favorite book of 2017. That makes your favorite book even more compelling to me.
Last video?! No year-end book superlative tag this year?
