  • Thanks for watching our video highlights of the Kerry Way. We completed this hike in May of 2023. We stayed in Bed and Breakfast accommodations each evening and had our luggage transferred to the next accommodation each morning.
    We arranged the Kerry Way hike through a company called Ireland Walk Bike Hike. The company is local to the Kerry Peninsula area of south-west Ireland and they made all the lodging and luggage transfer arrangements for us. In addition to quite detailed printed maps and guides, they also provided us with a custom smartphone application containing our daily walking routes and GPX track files for me to import to my preferred AllTrails application.
    We enthusiastically recommend Ireland Walk Bike Hike. They were very responsive to a multitude of questions we had in the months before the hike, and they worked with us to modify their typical agenda to add an extra day at the beginning of the hike and a zero day in Caherciveen. A company representative personally met with us at our B&B at the beginning of the trip to answer any questions we might have and he encouraged us to call or text during the hike if there were any issues. We took them up on that offer a few times when we opted to shorten our hike for the day by requesting a taxi transfer.
    As with many multi-day trekking hikes like the Kerry Way, we met many friendly locals; as well as other hikers from all over the world.
    Our accommodation list

    Nice to see you enjoy the Kerry Way. I start walking in about two weeks. This is almost the way I will walk and planned it too.

    Thank you for sharing this impressive Kerry-video! We're looking forward to walk the Kerry Way Spring '24... One question: how does the boat connection back to Killarney work??

    • @mywifemakesmetravel
      @mywifemakesmetravel  9 месяцев назад

      It is possible to get a one-way ticket on the boat that travels between Lord Brandon's Cottage (misidentified as Lord Byron's Cottage in the video - my apologies) and Ross Castle in Killarney. Please note that the boat departs Lord Brandon's Cottage around 2pm so our walk from Kenmare was shortened to 7.7 miles by taking a taxi transfer out of Kenmare. This ensured we didn't miss the boat. I believe you can see the boat operator's web site at gapofdunloetraditionalboattours.com/boat-tours/. They advertise the round-trip option but will accommodate one-way trips like ours. Be sure and have an Irish coffee and scone at Lord Brandon's cottage while you wait for you boat - yummy!

    I plan on doing the same trip this May. I just started watching your video and one question came up. Since your luggage is transferred for you, why the full backpack? I plan on traveling with the Osprey Farpoint 55. My expectation is to use the main backpack as luggage and the daypack for hiking.

      Good question. Both our packs were 50L Ospreys. We definitely didn't fill them to their capacity. We like to carry extra items so we're never in an uncomfortable situation. For the expected rain in Ireland we obviously packed rain gear. In addition to that, we weren't quite sure what the temperatures would be like. We packed a few options for lightweight jackets as well as gloves and hats. In addition, I carried a gimble and my DJI drone inside the pack. The extra room allowed us to then carry packed lunches with us without having to cram everything in. In the end, we got lucky with the weather and experienced only 1 day of any significant rain (coming out of the Black Valley.) Good luck with your trip!

      @@mywifemakesmetravel Thanks. What extra clothing items would you definitely bring/not bring for a return trip in May? Iphone is my only equipment, so very light in that department.

      I would still bring my full rain gear on another Ireland hike. The weather is just too unpredictable. Besides that, I always pack a compressible, lightweight down jacket. It's there for emergencies and also works great in the evenings when walking around towns, etc. I carry a lightweight pair of 'runners' gloves, which I would bring again, as well as a wool beanie. I think I had a heavier pair of gloves as well that I would probably ditch on a future Ireland hike in the April or May timeframe. Don't underestimate the need for waterproof footwear. The ground can be quite wet in many areas and its firmness is often misleading. I often found myself stepping onto what I thought was solid ground, only to sink inches deep into a soft, wet, spongy mess. You'll quickly learn what you can safely step on!

    I have another question for you. Do you think the boat trip was worth it? We are trying to decide if we should skip a majority of the Torq Waterfall to Black Valley and take the boat trip to Lord Brandon’s cottage. Thx!

      That's a tough question. We really enjoyed the hike from Torc Waterfall to Black Valley, which was day 1 of our Kerry Way hike. The boat trip was conscious decision on the LAST day of the hike - which would otherwise have been mostly a duplicate of day 1. If you are not doing the full Kerry Way (i.e. Killarney to Black Valley, all the way around the peninsula, and then back to Killarney) then I would personally opt for the hike from Torc Waterfall to Black Valley over the boat. If you are starting your hike from Killarney, and want to shorten that a bit, you can always hike to Muckross House and take a horse drawn carriage from there to Torc Waterfall. They charge as a round trip, but we had them simply drop us off at the Torc Waterfall trailhead. It was a bit of extra cost, but part of the whole experience! Having said that... my wife really enjoyed the boat trip (we had an excellent captain) and would choose that option.

    Hi: How far is it from Lough Acoose House to the Climbers Inn in Glencar? We are trying to decide how to shorten this day's hike a little. Thanks!

    • @mywifemakesmetravel
      @mywifemakesmetravel  8 месяцев назад

      It is 3.8 miles from Lough Acoose House to the Climbers Inn if you walk along the main road - which we did. Otherwise we would have circled around the south end of Lough Acoose to get to Climbers Inn, and that is about 5.8 miles. We tried to avoid long stretches of road walking, but decided to do it that day to make the day shorter. Our overall mileage for that day, was 11.86 miles. You can find our route that day at www.alltrails.com/explore/recording/glencar-to-glenbeigh-a368b0d

    Hi: I have another question for you. I am trying to figure out the best hiking app and it looks like you used All Trails and were able to insert pictures. Did you buy the pro version? What app did Ireland Walk Bike Hike give you and did it integrate into All Trails? I'm IT challenged, so any advice you can give me is appreciated. Thanks, Linda

    • @mywifemakesmetravel

      I have purchased the AllTrails yearly subscription (Pro) for the last several years as we use it extensively here in the US for all our hikes around home. I use it primarily for its offline maps (for when we have no cell service) as well as the ability to create my own maps. I'm sure there are other differences between the Pro and free versions, but I don't use many of the other features. As for the app from Ireland Walk, Bike and Hike... they gave maps that were pretty comprehensive and had waypoint descriptions for things along the route. I was able to get the GPX tracks from Ireland Walk, Bike and Hike and then uploaded those into my AllTrails application. However, we still referenced the maps and descriptions from them.
