I reject the notion that pleasure and pain are universally good and bad respectively. There are excesses of pleasure which should be avoided and some painful experiences which should nonetheless be sought.

Apologies if that came across as my argument. What I was saying is that pain and pleasure are at least universal experiences, in a way that things like modesty are not. Pain and pleasure are not really socially constructed. Virtues seem to be.

Carneades.org I was more objecting to the epicurean/hedonist/utilitarian position that pleasure and pain are the only measures of good and bad or that they are even universally good and bad respectively.

Seth Apex I fail to see how this goes against what Epicurus thought? "Sometimes we accept a pain, for a later pleasure and sometimes we forgo pleasure if greater nuisance arises later because of it"

because i see other things as greater goods than pleasure itself. freedom for one is a greater good in my view. i would rather be free to choose for myself and suffer for my decisions than to have conditions calculated to maximize my pleasure forced upon me. there are even times when my suffering can itself be considered a good in this respect, if it increases my freedom. Existence itself might also be considered a greater good by some. In fact, the epicurean notion tends toward an anti-existentialist notion that it might be better to not have lived or to commit suicide since we would not experience suffering.

Hmm...So you do accept it then ? - For what is 'excess' but that which is bad ?

Virtue = having balance in life
Excess of anything is dangerous same things have been discussed in taoism and vedic religion (ati sarvatra varjayte)

Excellent theme... "The virtues and attributes pertaining unto God are all evident and manifest, and have been mentioned and described in all the heavenly Books. Among them are trustworthiness, truthfulness, purity of heart while communing with God, forbearance, resignation to whatever the Almighty hath decreed, contentment with the things His Will hath provided, patience, nay, thankfulness in the midst of tribulation, and complete reliance, in all circumstances, upon Him." ~ Baha'u'llah, Baha'i Faith

You can be virtuous without God. I can do anything a Theist can do except go to heaven. Believing in Allah does not prevent you committing vices. Being a Bahai does not protect you from Muslim oppressions

In stoic philosophy, isn't virtue tied in with man fulfilling his "nature" or specific role in nature? If human nature in this context were defined logically it would resolve the cultural relativism problem. Alternately you could create a cultural virtue system which defines what makes a culture virtuous or not, and allow for limited relativism within those bounds.

I'm not an expert in stoic philosophy, but from my understanding the majority of stoics believe that virtue is necessary and sufficient for eudaimonia or a good life. This means that you don't need anything else. You can have a good life on the rack if you are virtuous. But some stoics might disagree with this and add other criteria. What philosopher are you thinking of with the idea of fulfilling nature?

Can you eventually do an episode on “Kettle Logic”? Just came across the term and thought it might make for an interesting video.
    Thanks!

this is so new to me, i always thought virtue meant finding the midway between being multimilionaire and filthy-rich, advocating for the midway between ultra-far-right economics and social aynwinism, and mixing some truth and lots of lies in the "perfect" proportion to push the right clown in office. /sarcasm
    Hehe :)

Haha. There is a case that has been made by some philosophers that virtue ethics is uniquely positioned to resolve modern political differences since it attempts to find compromises, it attempts to find the mean. However as you rightly point out, that only works if everyone agrees as to the two ends of the spectrum. If you are isolated enough in your own world or culture, your mean may be very far away from someone else's mean.

This one might do more harm than good. For instance, all cultures value modesty, however, they do so to VERY different degrees. Saying the most debauched cultures do not value modesty is simply wrong. And, since the root of this video is based on the DEGREES of things... it's a rather bad error.

I'm sure you don't have to explain every single fucking virtue jesus I'm already annoyed by having to read book 3 :(

    • @CarneadesOfCyrene
      @CarneadesOfCyrene  6 лет назад +1

I sometimes try to over-explain some of these topics as I am quite aware anyone that understands quickly can skip ahead or simply turn on the 1.5x or 2x feature. The hope is that more examples help to make clear the range of places this theory can be implemented, and make it clear for someone that doe snot understand.
