  • The Arch of Septimius Severus was constructed to commemorate two conflicts waged against Parthia in the 190s. But why is there a hole in it, and who put it there?

It's where the rope goes through that the Annunaki carried the thing with.

It's agreed then: it's a Tartarian power generator where the Anunaki recharged their purses. I think we've found the theory that makes the fewest assumptions!

The curve on the top of the opening looks like it was sawn down from a corner. With 4 rooms inside I wouldn't be surprised if a squatter wanted a window.

    Good video.
Oh, and the hole was to watch out for UFO's, or maybe Godzilla. (snickers)

Actually looks like where the ridge beam was incorporated into the end of the new structure.

Some sort of ordinance from a weapon strike?

Maybe a statue or head of some type fitted (anchored)into the slot?
    Looking down, over the entryway.

Wasnt there some kind of religious cult that decided to build huts and live on top of arches and columns for some reason?

The Stylites, of whom Simeon was the most (in)famous. But they were in Syria and the eastern Mediterranean, not Rome.

(sorry, completely off-topic for the video) ... but, I hope you read these comments, please can you point me to the (or a) video of yours which explains how political strategy of alliances tends to result in the famed checker-board of alternating friend/foe realms, or if it was not one of your own, can you suggest or make one? thx in advance

It’s a gap for pigeons to use. These are very common in buildings of this type

Commodus wasn't killed by the Praetorian guard, he was strangled by a wrestler named Narcissus, at the behest of others. You must be thinking of Caligula.

When Christianity took hold, Roman buildings were deliberately allowed to fall into disrepair or were destroyed because they were ‘pagan’.
The hole could be the result of this.
Or worse, ‘ROME’ was used as a ‘quarry’ to build churches. St Peter's Basilica was even partly built from Roman marble.
What was left of the Roman splendour in the Renaissance period was removed and built upon. Today, only the bare walls of the meagre remains can be seen.
You have to imagine it like today, when the Taliban and the ISS destroyed what was pre-Islamic

The two sides of the arch are quite similar and the text is identical on both. The south face does not have a hole in it. Canaletto is not a good source, unless it can be shown that his painting shows the north face of the arch. (E: the facing of the arch is more like east-west, so north means northeast and south means southwest)
My guess is, that it is a military hole from the time of Italian unification wars.

As a medievalist, I find it so sad that the obsession with antiquity led to the destruction of so many early christian structures and castles build incorporating ancient structures like the arenas of Nimes, the Parthenon, or this.
