Ben Schmidt I doubt his wife and loved ones are complaining he's still here. The poor guy's gonna reach his centenarian this year. He's definitely lived a good, full life and will eventually go of natural causes. Which I'm sure is the way he and his family would like him to go.
Oh wow, he did really?. Funny, some actors and actresses are forever connected to some roles in which the real ife is totally different to their roles.
Kirk Douglas, died today at the age of 103. He will never be forgotten. His classic, films such as "Spartacus" "The Champion " "Gunfight At The O.K.Corall ", to name a few will live on forever.
You have a point. And of course there are also the children among the slaves plus Spartacus' son in this scene. As for the credited cast, John Gavin - who played Iulius Caesar - died this year. Apart from Kirk Douglas, only actress Joanna Barnes lives. - she had a minor role as one of the guests in the gladiator room, escorted by Peter Ustinov.
What an ending this is so heart wrenching and the music is incredible with this last scene, where Varina tells her lover Spartacus, that their child will know what a hero his father was (sigh)
There movies today with ton of flashy cgi effects and no souls that are forgotten six months after their release. And then you have very old movies built with talent and passion that generations admire 60 years after. R.I.P Kubrick, Douglas, Olivier, Trumbo, and all those i can't remember the names. You're still with us.
Arguably one of the best movies ever. The greatest love story ever (The chemistry between Jean Simmons and Kirk Douglas is electric). Great political drama (Dalton Trumbo was writing dialogue relevant to the McCarthy era that was persecuting him) Great action movie. Great characters that were so real and multi dimensional. It stands up to multiple viewings and just keeps growing in stature as it ages.
Such great actors. The love these 2 characters had was so real. This whole film was so wonderfully made. Peter Ustinov describing the 2 awful snake women who choose the person they want to see fight each other for their entertainment is hilarious. I could not agree more. Jean Simmons could make any man fall in love with each character she played.
The music also just immediately grabs you and never let's go. This is one of the main things we're missing nowadays I think. Great works of art like this seem much rarer nowadays.
The really sad part was that him and another rebel that was like a son to him were forced to fight each other. They each want to bring a sudden swift end to each other because who ever wins the duel gets crucified. The kid was not willing to see him his father figure hero and leader proped up as some trophy.Spartacus knowing how slow Crucifixion is does not want the kid to die like that.
Fun Fact: *Though this scene was dramatized for symbolism; Spartacus’ body was never found or identified whereas denying the Romans the satisfaction of either crucifying him or putting his head on a pike*
One of the best endings in any movie. I saw this film as a boy and now nearly 50 years later I still rate it as one of the greatest films of all time. Brilliant cast, genius script and the soundtrack by Alex North is breathtaking. As I have said elsewhere on RUclips commenting on other films it can be the soundtrack that makes a movie a great movie as it cements all the other elements together. North's score is wonderful.
This is one of the greatest scenes in cinema. Jean Simmons such great work in this and films like this, and such great films like Elmer Ganry. I have no idea why she went ahead and did "Thornbirds."
“I’ll tell him who his father was and what he dreamed of” is one of the best lines in the whole film. That pushed me over the edge and made me start getting all crying and emotional.
Watching this very sad ending.. With crucified gladiators and this brave man dying twist my heart forever... Rest in peace Mr Douglas.. There will be not another Spartacus as real as you...
*Rest in Paradise* , Spartacus... I came here to get link of Kirk's most famous movie to post in my *Movies'group* on FB, in memoriam. 103 years old, what an achievement... You left a great legacy! LPM 💙☮️🎵
One of the most emotionnal ending movies. Spartacus died but the world will never forget his bravery, his fight for freedom and his legend ! Great heroes die but their legend is eternal.
Ohhhh my god I saw this movie when I was really young, maybe 5 or 6. I haven’t seen it since but I remember being really captivated by it and I always remembered two lines: “a baby in spring” and “goodbye my love, my life”. This is my first time rewatching this particular scene and it’s just like how I remembered 😭
Jean Simmons.... Such an exquisitely beautiful woman.... Just gorgeous 😍..... Effortlessly stunning... Magnificent movie... Mr Douglas.... Via con dios...
RIP Mr Kirk Douglas. Along with 6000 other crucified slaves it is definitely a memorable role on screen. This film get me started on loving classical history back in the early 1980s when it was first shown on tv when I was just 10 years old. The screen was small then and the picture quality is fuzzy analogue but today I can watch it on hi-def blu-ray anytime on a 65 inch digital wide-screen tv.
Always remember this people U want change than u have to stand up Change can never be brought just by whining, only great people bring change and change can only and ONLY be brought by violence, never simply by words coz the powerful understands only the language of fists, be it govt, be it dictators To all the freedom fighters everywhere around the globe who brought change and freedom Respect 🚩
Freedom, for me, is when I am away from civilization, where money is worthless, where the internet does not reach, where there is no sound of machinery or electronics, and no one telling me what I can and cannot do.
I have loved this movie since I was a teenager...the love story and Instrumental theme is magnificent! This and the Thornbirds are my all time favorites!!
This scene didn't make me cry but water was building up in my eyes, seeing how Varinia and Spartacus meet each other for the last time to say their final goodbyes and what Varinia said on how she was going to tell their son about Spartacus and his determination to free many slavers from the Roman Empire.
still one of the greatest movies ever made... a true epic with a breathtaking human quotient. I remember watching with mu father. Never saw him cry before. But that ending....
I think a good case can be made that, based on objective criteria, Alex North's music is the best original film score ever composed. And I say that as a big fan of composers like Herrmann, Korngold, and Rosza.
I don't know how historically accurate this movie was, but it left me wanting more ! And the soundtrack was so awesome , no words do it justice ! Laurence Olivier, Jean Simmons, Peter Ustinov, Charles Laughton and Tony Curtis as Antoninus .......... what a priceless classic !
I wished Kirk could have said something down to Jean, but I could see his smile acknowledge his son's freedom. Read a bit about the crucifixion death penalty, and it really was horrible. The Romans just left you there to rot. Rest in Peace Kirk Douglas. :)
it's hard to breath, let alone speak. Another reason why when Jesus was crucified, the crowd was amazed he could yell before he died on the cross. He should have died before being crucified given how many times He was whipped. But His spirit is stronger than His flesh. The Son has His glory in the Father's kingdom.
Came to see this after hearing the news: he lived over 100 years and touched our hearts! Rest easy now Kirk Douglas

Spartacus was a better film than Ben Hur. Robbed of Oscars.

My favorite movie ever! Jean Simmons was such a beautiful and talented woman!
absolutly agree!!
I've just watched the the end of Spartacus and it still bring tears what a magnificent film one of the best fils ever 👍👍
The Baby is my half brother what a heartwarming scene
Really? What's his name, if I might ask?
Nsme of the movie?
So Sad😢. Magnificent performances.
A film which was made 56 years ago. Kirk Douglas is 100 years old now! He is nearly the only one from the cast who is still alive.
You have a point. And of course there are also the children among the slaves plus Spartacus' son in this scene.

Take care Kirk. We will never forget you as Spartacus, as Van Gogh, and all of the great characters you played. We love you very much. Thank you
He was brilliant in VAN GOUGH, even looked like him played the tormented scenes amazingly, what a miss..

HackneyShark: Spartacus wasn't executed. His body was never found by the Romans, and most historians agree he died during the last battle
One of the best films ever made.
As a dad I can imagine that is about the only possible news that would ease the agony of dying by crucifixion if only slightly.
Without question the finest piece of acting that contained no dialogue of all time. Unforgettable!
Even many years later, this scene has me in tears
Rest in Peace.. SPARTACUS :( 2020
My heart bust at this ending and the "I am spatacus" scene!!!!!!!!
One of the greatest films of all time. And Jean Simmons was perfectly cast.

Yes we’re in a very cynical age. No wonder mental illness is soaring.
This movie always makes me cry. One of my all time favorite old movies.
I was about to say, why does she want him to die, and then I was like, oh, crucifixion is slow
Crucifixion is a 60 hour work week
Unless you work for pop telecom, then it feel much worse and much longer.
So he can die happy with the memory of his son and the woman he loves in his mind until the end.
