  • Boris Berezovsky performs Rachmaninov's last prelude (op. 32 no. 13) in D flat major. This prelude is not very popular but still one of my favorite because I think, he concludes the set with the best way with his cyclic form!
    "The slow final prelude is a glorious hymn-like peroration and a total transformation of mood of the very first of these pieces, with wich, significantly it shares the same tonic." Peter Donohoe

    It was his final prelude, and it sure sounds like it. He ends his preludes on the triumphant key of Db Major. It also seems like he is tying ideas and themes from earlier preludes into this piece. Truly astounding!

    Rachmaninov at his best. I think I was 10-11 y.o. when I first listened to somebody mentioning Rachmaninov, or saw that family name written somewhere, and I imagined he would be the author of something like this prelude. Of course I did not imagine this prelude, but later, when I listened to other pieces by Rachmaninov, it was as if I were a bit disappointed, as if I thought: "-No, no, this is not what I expected…" I even suspected that I was wrong, that perhaps I had imagined something that was not what Rachmaninov had to tell me, and that I had to listen to his music for what it is, not for what I imagined it to be. But when I listened to this prelude, I thought: "-At last! This was it". So thank you for sharing!

    Like you say: A perfect conclusions of the set of preludes. One of the post powerful, yet complex preludes of them all. A pleasure to listen to something like this!

    THIS PIECE HAS BEWITCHED ME. So magical. It being the last one, you can hear the finale of a long long play, curtains fallin close..

    My mother used to play this! It’s one of my favorite classical pieces!

    My favorite interpretation. Boris plays it at a perfect tempo (others seem to play faster.) He also has such a free sound that I feel Rachmaninoff tried to implement, like the music is blowing you away with the wind.

    To play the final chord, I recommend splitting it between the hands similarly to how the ending of the C#m prelude is played: LH takes the lower 4 notes, while RH takes the top 3.

    It is a magnificent prelude. Very reminiscent I think of his writing in the 3rd piano concerto, especially when the first theme comes around for the second time in it's full majestic setting. Very powerful performance as well.

    yes he does! check the version of ashkenazy to see how he brings out the chords not at once, a special effect wich is not so bad!

    The ff part in Db major reminds me of his 3rd piano concerto

    This is a very straightforward interpretation, very good, but of all those on YT perhaps Audrey Gugnin (Russian, of course) is the best - spectacular, triumphant bravura playing. This prelude is so perfect on so many levels it's truly a joy to play and hear. Without a doubt, the best summation of a set of preludes every written.

    In those final 3 measures, is he actually playing those full chords at once?! Wow.

    One needs to hear the recording my Michael Ponti on this one to really compare renditions of this marvellous (and perhaps greatest) Prelude.

    Rach, kind of pushes the envelope of his technique and style in this one, more than in any of his other preludes. Probably fitting it is the finale.

    im a guitar player and i was just wondering if you could reccommend some composers of piano..who apply the use of full chords and half chords together in sort of a "strumming" fashion for lack of a better term..i get great inspiration for guitar from chopin and rachmaninoff..but am limited in my knowledge..thx in advance!

    Like it but he completely blew off the tempo designation for the last measures. It has a totally different effect if he adhered to it. He's a little loose with the dynamics elsewhere.

    OverMADE version for me. It is spontaneous emotion that faults for me. This music starts to die while passed through the mind not through the heart. Sorry, dear Boris. :)

  • @rpatricknabors
    @rpatricknabors 10 лет назад

    Extremely weak performance and lacks the total range of dynamics. After all the dynamics range from ppp to fff in the score. The tempo marking at the start is "grave" and in this performance I would say it was played rather fast at the start.

    • @rpatricknabors
      @rpatricknabors 10 лет назад

      Also at the "allegro" he is not up to tempo. More attention is needed to the indications Rachmaninoff provided.

      This prelude is a really touchy one. Out of all the interpretations I have heard so far, Santiago Rodriguez's hits the mark. I really suggest checking him out.
      I am not trying to poo-poo the other performers' interpretations, this piece is a very difficult beast to tackle emotionally and technically.

      The final grave is way slower than the starting tempo, which is completely opposite of the way the piece should build.

      It's perfectly fine to give constructive critisicm to someone, while not actually being able to play it for yourself.
