Two Tribes - How To Play That Bass Riff! (tabs and tutorial)

- This week we’re going to look at an incredibly famous bass line that’s not actually played on a bass! It’s the main riff from the song Two Tribes by Frankie Goes To Hollywood.
There’s a huge amount of mythology surrounding this bass line with rumours that Norman Watt Roy was brought into play it but then sampled for the Fairlight by Trevor Horn and there’s also a rumour that it was written long before Trevor Horn’s involvement. Whatever, it’s a wicked bass line that can be pretty hard to play so let’s have a look.
We'll be looking at how to play it using a pick and slap technique in an effort to mimic that choppy sequenced feel.

Mark O’Toole plays this live perfectly
the problem with this song is that by about 3 minutes in, your right hand is entirely numb
and there is 2 more minutes to go
and they say girls love bassits...
You can also play the riff high on the G and D strings and use an octaver pedal to give you the bottom end sound of the original.
That’s a thumbs up for even thinking of making a video on this 👍
The bass tone in the single / video versions is such a monster sound. The bass line during the verse is also pretty cool.
Love this video. I have a 9:00 remix that’s got even more creative bass parts on it. Don’t know where I got this mix but it isn’t on any streaming service, I looked. It’s everything you played but tons of fills and slides that aren’t on the radio edit, which I can barely listen to now. Glad someone finally showcased this iconic riff.
Are you referring to Two Tribes (Annihilation)? (This mix: ruclips.net/video/XHFPuH5iEww/видео.html)
Yep, it was written before Horn signed them to ZTT. O'Toole is more than capable of playing this bassline and many others. The record sounds more like a DX7 or similar. Watt-Roy was directly involved in Relax but not in Two Tribes. Two Tribes the record was mainly Horn, Steve Lipson and Andy Richards, the session keyboardist..
Fantastic site!! I've got to utilize your lessons more!! What a great lesson above! I never could seem to figure out how to get 'faster on my bass lines'! PERFECT. You are awesome!!! And thanks a lot.
The double thumb method definitely sounded way more authentic Mark, though you’re right about the original using samples sequenced. 80’s music was awesome compared to the dross of today.
Yes, becauise today we don't use samplers or sequencers eh?`^^
@@spaggtrait1608 No, just because people are lazy. They use loops and little imagination. That’s why modern pop is crap.
Watch Trevor Horn play this, The Producers playing live; he does it so effortlessly it's ridiculous; the clip is superb
great tute. Iconic 80's bass
I heard it from Norman, it was part of a session. He also played the Relax bass line in the same session.
YES!!! Some Frankie!! Awesome choice of song, Mark, and as always, a great video tutorial.
Great lesson Mark. Haven't heard that song in a long time. Cheers.

Cool
Great lesson, Mark! Btw you are a mean double-thumber 😀 👍🏿👍🏿
Excellent lesson.Thank you.
Great lesson as always Mark
Very cool. I had no idea that line was in Two Tribes.
You should do a the police bass lesson
I need a lesson on Tuesdays gone!!!
This song sounds so much better with a real bass guitar. That synth bass was the bane of many 80s tracks.
The original way was the best and was played that way for a reason. No one gives a shit about the millennial’s obsessive need to hear a bass sound like a trebled out thin piano wire. There’s a reason the 80’s had the best music of any other decade.
You’re playing this with way too much much treble. Mark O’toole had a deep rich 70’s bass tone. That thin trebled out piano wire shit tone didn’t start till the 90’s when all music began to totally suck!
great. ty
You could also incorporate fingers with the thumb in the slap style it makes more sens3
Who's playing bass on "A Good Heart" by Feargal Sharkey?
Album credits name two bassist, Nathan East and Dean Garcia, but don't mention who plays on what track.
Hi Mark, I’m having trouble with my bass amp at the moment. It keeps making a crackling sound and the sound keeps cutting out suddenly. Not really sure what it could be but was wondering if you had any idea? Thanks 👍
Check your cable first. Always check your connections before blaming the gear.
@@SeanVedell Thank you
Also, if it crackles when you turn the knobs, your pots are cacked up. Mine got so bad eventually no sound was coming out of the amp!
The story I heard was the only original part of the recording to make the was the splash of the group jumping into a swimming pool, but as many have said: if it's a choice between the truth and the myth, always go with the myth.
The splashing in the pool was actually used in Relax.
@@glengreenman3921 indeed, I am not so up on the Franky stuff as to me it was just 80s tripe that I wasn't into...
I’ll bust that myth - the Relax “splash” was a Roland Jupiter 8.
Yes, yes, but how about Relax. I want to learn that.
Horn replaced O'Toole purely to get unnatural computer precise rhythm.......not only does he smash this bassline out of the park live.....the complicated mallet and piccolo bit in the middle is taken from the bass solo.....which he plays live too. Certainly they needed a bit of help live to play all of Jeczalik etc's wagnerian fairlight madness, but take it all away and the lads were tight as hell.
Where’s the chorus?
It sounds like three on the D, not 2 on the D, at the beginning.
My bass is always tuned in D (not drop D). Sounds much better and easier to play
13 likes before it's even been released!
Trevor Horn and The Producers played it on five-string. Not easy.
hard to relax playing this
Not even the best FGTH bass line… that would be welcome to the pleasure dome. Now that’s fun to play.
Who said anything about better or best?
@@talkingbasslessons you missed the point. Whilst this is a great line for those who enjoyed it and don’t know of the band they should try the line from pleasuredome that’s less rock and more funk driven. I wonder how many knew that Holly was also a bass player before FGTH in Big in Japan with Budgie from Siouxie and the banshees.
@@GrimmmReaperz Yep Two Tribes is great but I also love playing along to Welcome To the Pleasure Dome!
Or the bass solo on born to run IMO better than the original.
No rumor about it either, that entire song m, it’s bass line and it’s musical motifs all existed long before Trevor Horn.
