I have Asperger's Syndrome, too. When I first found out I had it I tried not to let affect me too much--"don't let it define you", we always tell ourselves. But like it or not, it's still a part of you, even though it isn't all of you, if you have it.
Having AS and being a Christian wasn't an issue, either, but recently I got this idea in my head that somehow the two were just completely incompatible. I thought I was at a crossroads in my life, but neither one of them seemed right.
I could either (I thought): Try and "cure" myself by forcing myself in social situations and be like everyone else at my church, or embrace my AS and find people that would accept me the way I was. But neither solution seemed to be ideal: If I chose to keep my faith, I reasoned, then I'd surround myself with people who were glad I was one of them--and yet I wouldn't really be one of them because I have Asperger's. My other option was to join "my own kind" somehow and assume that they'd welcome me, more so than my fellow Christians. But I know that they wouldn't have done that, either: Most people with AS aren't Christians for various reasons (a number of them outright hate it, in fact), and knowing that I couldn't simply give up my faith, I'd be ostracized from them as well, maybe because they'd think I was brainwashed just for being a Christian.
Either way, I thought, I'd be alone no matter which community I joined. One thing you should know about us Aspies is that we can be in a crowd of people, and yet still feel alone. I felt that no matter what choice I made, I would be denying an important part of myself--a part of me that perhaps God needed for something more important than my own petty life. He gave me AS for a reason, and it's not because it's some "curse" on my parents.
So even though I feel like my mind is more troubled than it used to be, I realized through people like Brant that you can be both. Just the fact that there were other Christians who just so happened to have Asperger's in existence was a relief. My Christian journey has lately been filled with doubts and depression, but God is pulling me back up everyday, even though I have yet to find out what His plan for me is.
Brant's honesty, by the way, is a unique trait of AS: Because we don't "get" social cues, we don't see any need to mince words or shower people with compliments when there is some sort of elephant in the room that needs to be said. The phrase "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all", is difficult for us to grasp. But that's not always a bad thing, as evidenced by this guy's long career in radio (which I unfortunately missed).
I'm saying this hoping that someone will read it because every Christian NEEDS to know about Asperger's. Churches tend to operate in specific ways, ways that draw many people in but alienate or confuse people with AS. I'm still awkward about being around so many people in church, not knowing or caring to know anyone, yet I go anyway because I know that I need to, although not for a sense of community or social interaction but to be fed spiritually by people who understand the Bible better than I do.
Having faith was difficult, too; I'd pray and then feel like God wasn't answering, or I wouldn't understand some theological viewpoint that everyone else around me seemed to accept without question, and to this day I'm still more comfortable conceiving my own answers for tough questions rather than asking for what I consider to be an opinion on some Bible-related thing. I can also identify with Brant's conversion experience--I became a Christian, or so I said, for the same Hell-related reason. But now that my faith has grown, I can see that I've really only been a genuine Christian for a few years, and I still have a lot of work to do.
Chances are, given the 21st century and whatnot, you could end up having a child with AS. And if you do, you must be very careful about how you help him or her get acquainted with Jesus Christ. If you're too harsh then he or she will see Christianity as an arm of oppression, and if you're too lenient, well...that one is obvious. If you just keep telling your child that "they just need more faith", then it won't work. You have to provide evidence for God's existence, and rationally explain why God does things the way He does.
I feel like my own reasons for keeping my faith when I felt like I "should have" become an agnostic was because I simply introduced to the basics, without feeling like I was being told what to think or what viewpoint to have. I read the Bible on my own, thinking through my own brain and rationally explaining to myself how God's plan works. In hindsight, I should have sought more help, but I was able to solve many tough faith-based questions on my own.
My point is that with some people, faith is emphasized in Christianity more than evidence and rationality. With Aspies, you NEED to make it go the other way around. An Aspie can't have faith without first being given good reasons to trust in God. We might start out as doubting Thomases, but when we get enough evidence to achieve faith we can go to places most other Christians wouldn't even consider. In Thomas' case, that was India, and in Brant's it was the people that listened to him on the radio. Personally, I would love to share the Gospel with so many of my fellow AS people--so many of "us" are lost and suffering in a world we don't understand. If more Aspies knew about Jesus than more of us would have much happier, more fulfilling lives. Some people with AS are able to "overcome" its bad aspects, but others don't, living alone, unproductive and miserable for their whole lives.
My newfound faith is helping me realize just how many people are suffering in the world that really need the Gospel. I feel like more Christians with AS are going to be needed in the future--and the Church really needs (in addition to rationality and proof for the faith) to show love and understanding for these people, rather than draw them away.
Or worse, assume that there's just something wrong with them that they "need to fix" or that "God will fix". Never have I prayed for God to "cure" me; I have things I can improve on, but my AS is sticking with me, and it gives me a unique way of looking at life and perceiving my faith. The Church needs to understand that although AS people are probably prone to certain sins, their condition (it's not a disability) isn't sinful in itself. As Brant has demonstrated, Christians with AS could be very vital parts of the Body of Christ.

      Spencer,
I'm just now seeing this. I was getting a link to the video to pass along to a mom of an Aspie, and happened to see your comment from two years ago.
THANK YOU for taking the time to write this. I know it's been a couple years, but this is so, so good. You've returned the favor and been a help to me.
As it turns out, I hand in the final manuscript in a couple hours for a book called "Blessed are the Misfits", and it's about this exact topic. Frankly, I should probably have just cut-and-pasted your response into the book. But that seems a violation of Fair Use Doctrine and a copyright infringement. :)
But thank you. You said it so well. Isn't that weird? I'm writing a book about how we're not alone in this, there are so many like us, and yet I still needed your comment was a confidence boost.
No, we're not alone. Not at all.

I understand about Asperger's Syndrome. Never been diagnosed, but after looking up what it's like, I have a VERY strong suspicion I have it. Which would explain all the social cues I tend to miss and how I tend to see the immensely differently. It also explains why so many have thought me to be weird- understanding what others thought too tricky to understand or seeing something hard what others saw as simplistic. It's a whole 'nother world to be autistic and understand it thoroughly.

my wife is borderline autistic. you can't possibly understand what it's like in his head. so the fact that he sees things different, and he's not naturally social, doesn't make him "hateful". he just has a different perspective than you. an just b/c someone works on a radio station that is faith based, doesn't make him perfect. also...these interviews are edited, so you can't vouch for how much glory he gave God. Lets stop hating each other, and Be thankful that God changes lives. Boom roasted!

If you don't like it, go listen to something else. You miss the point entirely. It is amazing how God can make someone, despite their apparent flaws and weaknesses, be a light to someone who is facing some dark times in their lives.
Sure, we may be stereotyped as nerds, dorks and Jesus freaks, but there is no reinforcement of stereotypes involved. It's the world that makes Christianity unpopular while those who are Christian walk everyday with Christ.
