Hey everybody! Thanks for watching this video on "Is TikTok Hurting the Music Industry?". I've addressed some of these concepts before, but I really wanted to have an entire video, solely dedicated to TikTok vs. Music. There's so much to talk about and I'm curious to see what you think. Is it okay that musicians are making music so that it sounds "like a TikTok song"? Are the smaller musicians going viral on the app going to be able to sustain their careers in music? Let me know.

completely get what everyone's saying about Jack Stauber. I wanted to include that song in the video but I just felt like he didn't belong in the BENEE/Doja/Megan/Weeknd/Drake/Bieber section. he's definitely more established than the musicians I lumped him in with, but I still think the ghost pictures/Oh Khlahoma trend is an odd thing within his career. and thanks for the love on the merch 💖 much appreciated

haha right it's so annoying, and then they think they are number one but really not many people outside their fandom care about the artist/song.
Also, really annoying how these artists / labels put out four "different" versions of the same album, the only difference is the coloring of the packaging so that the fans will buy all four versions to collect. This increases the chances of the album going number one...really pathetic cause like who cares if you debut at number 5 or 10 instead of 1. As an artist myself I have thought about this MANY times. Personally I don’t use TikTok I don’t get much enjoyment out of it but I was with my family around early September this year and I had released one of my songs recently. Then they started saying “oh you should make TikToks to get your name out there” and while yes it can be a place to help artists grow a following it can also put artists in a box. If you aren’t constantly making the type of songs that you blew off of people will start to move away from your music, and if you keep making the same songs every time it will come off as a rip off or gimmick. There’s some good that can come off of TikTok but there’s a lot of unspoken damage it causes that should also be addressed. Those are my thoughts, excellent video.

long answer: it's very similar to the ringtone rap era from the mid-late 00s (ex. hurricane chris, j-kwon, mims, jibbs), giving us nothing but trashy one hit wonders that i will guarantee will fade into obscurity 5 years from now. just look at all the artists who blew up because of tik tok. lil tecca recently flopped with his debut album virgo world, arizona zervas hasn't had a top ten song since roxanne and it's almost been a year since it blew up because of tik tok, bbno$ might have that memelord fanbase but he hasn't had a billboard entry since lalala and it's also been a year since it blew up on tik tok, i don't see saint jhn have a top ten song like roses did and while jack harlow has a hardcore fanbase, he hasn't had another successful billboard entry like what's poppin.

Yes it is. It's making peoples attention span even shorter. Some people only know a song but a 15 second hook and some dance associated with it.

  • @emranurrahman1359
    @emranurrahman1359 Год назад +4

Good music has been ruined by TikTok, as hearing the same 15 second snippets of the same track over and over again has made enjoying music unbearable.
Pretty much every genre of music from all over the world has been subject to this dancing trend.

From my own experiences in music, dating back to the 90s boom, you can just remove the word "tiktok" from this video, and everything said will still remain true.
Trends come, trends go. They always start out with the people deciding the trend, then the music industry exploiting it, then the people finding the next one.
It always pushes new talents to the top, then the music industry re-aims its current artists towards that same style, then that style dies down as people find new styles.
These waves go intermittently between each other, with styles switching more rapidly and trends a bit slower.
For a little while, you get diversity on the radio, then everything starts sounding the same, then a bit of diversity, then everything sounds the same.
Now it is TikTok driving it, a few years ago it was RUclips, then Spotify before that. In the late 90s it was radio driving it, in the early 00s it was home-hosted internet radio (which quickly got snapped up by the music industry to be industry-hosted internet radio).
It's just what happens in music.
And with every trend, it takes less and less time before the industry follows popularity and less and less time before people find the next trend. We're almost at the point where we get a new trend monthly now, compared to the 90s boom, where the trends switched about once a year, or the trends from a few decades before that, which took several years to switch.

Jack Stauber is seriously like one of my favorite musicians, he takes like typical sounds of indie and puts a dark twist on them. I’m glad he’s seeing TikTok success, but at the same time I don’t want him to become that pretentious edgy thing that a lot of darker TikTok songs end up being

the fact that so many tik tok audios are just songs that are completely or almost completely unaltered and have had their titles changed is frustrating. it doesn’t give credit to the actual song and artist.

My problem with TikTok is when a song gets popular it shows up in every single TikTok. Even if it doesn’t make sense to tl use the song. I can’t stand hearing Supalonely, Roses, and some of the other songs mentioned here because I’ve heard the same sound bite a million times. Obviously it helps the musicians get noticed but it’s so annoying.

I will never forgive TikTok for what they did for Black Dresses. I know that in that incident, it was just a couple of entitled kids to blame, but might reflect a bigger problem about the loss of a song's value that TikTok creates..
I dunno, it might be a generational thing, but I find it weird that some people can make a TikTok with an innocent song like Say So, followed by a TikTok with a Black Dresses song about the sexual abuse of children, and have them basically be the same video.

    • @CalebSM64

I am from the Dominican Republic. We have a guy there that seems to have found the "recipe" or current trend for TikTok. He connects song after song and they go viral on TikTok everytime. So much that some of his songs have been used on Superbowl performances, and his dance challenges performed on national TV by big celebrities like Jessica Alba and Ellen. His name is Nfasis. Its crazy how much he has accomplished with his simple songwriting but Im sure he puts a lot of thought into his writing even thou its very simple words.

It’s also interesting to see what the app’s doing for old music.
The most recent trend with the song Dreams by Fleetwood Mac reminded me how much I love the song and I’m so happy that more people young people are hearing it for the first time.
But also, is this what the song should be associated with? Does it matter if a classic song’s meaning is diluted by a meme, or is it just good that it’s getting traction?
    I’m not sure

The thing with TikTok is that it’s a double edged sword. It’s good for getting songs popular and getting people listening to it, but there’s a risk of it being over played. When a song gets over played it gets boring and then people just stop listening. It’s good for short term but in the long run it just won’t work.
