I'm 28, just bought a 2015 Yamaha FZ6R as my first bike! Definitely not the fastest but I thought it'd be one of the best "do it all" bikes to get. Loving it so far, have almost 600 miles on it in 2 weeks! 😏

2017 SV650 here... beast of a bike for a beginner. Just my opinion. All depends on the riders mindset though. I like to drive quick not fast and it does that perfectly. But not necessarily “safely”.
*Perfect fast beginner bike: CBR600RR* 599cc 4 cylinder 120 hp at the crank, 99 wheel 45lb/ft torque at the wheels 0-60 in 3 seconds 1/4 mile in 10.9 seconds Top speed 158mph Easy to ride Handles beautifully 430lb wet Won many awards Shredded in moto racing
@@ischwhit6747 The bike is great, but my point is that you won't do 0-60 in 3s and 1/4 mile in 10.9s. You need a lot of experience purely drag racing to achieve this.

I started on a sv650 and trust me you will smoke pretty much any car you will see off the line , it will do 0 to 100mph in less than 9 seconds, so it's up there with bmw m4, and rs3 in car terms. 40 to 80mph is around 4.5 seconds with is good too, but once u get to 100mph that where it struggles . But its such a fun bike , has real usable power , same with any of the 650 bikes really . I ride a R1 now and I still get back on the sv650 and it puts a smile on my face. You csn really push the bike to its limits. But it is plenty fast enough imo , I really wouldn't even say its just a beginer bike the 650 class, experienced riders love them too
Progressive charges a couple hundred bucks more than Geico for LESS coverage. Adding a 2nd bike w/ progressive cost about 50-60% the cost of the 1st bike's insurance (both bikes sub 400cc). Geico basically charges only the cost of 1 bike since realistically only one bike is on the road at one time. And more coverage. Recently switched from Prog.
The best way to choose a first bike is to try and ride or at least sit on those bikes. I started on a yamaha fz6 and I'm totally happy that i didn't get anything smaller. Come on, your bike will go as fast as you want it to go. A 600 won't kill you the moment you start it. Just be gentle with a throttle until you get comfortable with it. It is most likely an inline 4 engine that won't go fast at all until you reach 7-8k rpm.
Inline 4's are probably better than a thumper or a V twin....because they are gutless down low.. I had a GPZ 400 (US grey import) that was a joy to ride, because it didn't tear my arms off unless I wanted it too. Pity it died.
i thought i will regret my decision to start on cbr1000rr-r but doing better than I thought its a such a power machine i love it my friends love it too they are on r1 and s1000rr we always go on rides on weekends its so much fun
My first bike was a 2017 yamaha fz6r. Unfortunately that was the last year they made them. I have always wanted to see yammi's opinion of them, but since they are no longer in production it doesn't look like I will ever know.
I'm 52 and I'm getting a Yamaha FJR1300, first bike, ftw. I rode dirt bikes a few decades ago...I'll be fine. Ex Marine, just gotta use some discipline...is what I keep telling myself.😂
I have the baby GS, slightly heavier with the same engine, so slightly slower. I took a great 200 mile round trip ride to visit a friend a week ago. I always ride back roads. I programmed the OSMand+ navigation app to avoid highways. As I was leaving town, a Chrysler Pacifica minivan beat me off the line. Oh, the shame. Love my baby GS, though.
Be careful about inexpensive insurance. It's not like the companies or policies are bad; it's just what it covers. Cheap policies are generally liability only, it covers people or property that you damage, not collision or medical for the driver.
@Yammie Noob excited to hear your opinion on the R7 yes I know it’s a plastic MT-07 but I think the upgraded suspension and renovations might give it an edge. Had my eye on the boring Ninja 650 for over a year and then I started working at a motorcycle dealership. Yea I had people trying to convince me of just getting an R6 and leaving it in the beginner driver mode and fortunately I know too well that mode would be switched off in an instant. I guess that’s what happens when two days after your first time putting a leg over a bike you’re handed an R1M. I think the R7 would be just the slight punch to keep me happy but not bored walking into my first bike great video and can’t wait for a review!
@@victorionut9133 actually have had the R7 for a couple months now and love it, I wanted a beginner bike and the RS660 seemed like it was starting to go over that category in to more of an intermediate bike. My issue was also spending an extra $3k for technology that would be overwhelming and not something I could use to its potential and Italian bikes are a nightmare from what I hear to work on compared to their Japanese counterparts. Worry free when getting into a new thing was the goal and I am happy I sent it.
My first driven motorcycle was a Yamaha DT125. And I was just 14 back then. I needed a chair just to hop on the bike and it's not that hard to start it. I also need a fence or a wall when stopping to lean the bike and get down.
The power is measured what power is going to the wheels, rather than directly at the engine. Engines will always lose power once the power gets from the engine to the driveshaft to the chain to the wheels.
@@themogus Still all other bikes were shown with crank hp. :D Not too consistent. Btw the 2021 model gained a bit (0.5-1hp) at the crank compared to the 2019-20 models.
94 is the crank hp, 80 is the wheel hp. 94 is the official number since that's also what's being used for calculating it for detuning (in A2 license countries).
Started on an 83 magna. Yes, it's cruiser shape. Yes it's a 750. Yes it's as fast as a new V-rod. It's a great bike and plenty slow down low to learn and plants fast up high to fuck around. Sucks above 100 mph (even with upgraded suspension) but amazing for 0-100 (which I do often) and handles pretty well. It's interesting to see most of the newer motovloggers not talking about these irrelevant bikes, and I don't blame them -- but I am still in love with my vf750 and am having trouble finding an "upgrade" under 5 grand (it was $1500) Wat should I get ? St1300 might make sense but it's not much faster from 0-100 which is practically 100% of my driving :)
I have the fz07. With a tune and exhaust. Can say I went all out about 3 times. Twice on a drag strip. It has plenty of power. Will do a mid 12 pretty easy. As fast as a 50 mustang
I'm 16. I dont have any type of license. I'm probably not gonna get a bike till I'm in my late 20's. I will still watch every single one of these videos religiously.
Oh yammie be easy on they are yzf3 it’s a lot better when you don’t have huge canyons and a shorter rides, and when you have smaller inside streets that were designed back in the 1970s that just swoopp around your own little dragon tale on a flat ground short ground plane but i love how The gearing is on the r3 the exact same on my Infiniti G 35 coupe speed shifting So you’re running through the gears more times

So I’m trying to buy my first motorcycle next month. I’m trying to decide if a 400cc bike or 650 as a starter bike. Not trying to over think it either but wanna be sure I pick the right decision. Any words of wisdom?
Honestly your maturity and age make a difference but the sub 400cc bikes you will still love and get to use all the power. The 650s are alot for beginners that why he recommends like if you are almost 30 and can be mature enough to not kill yourself on the 650 you can start on one but he mostly recommends smaller bikes to learn on cause its safer and useable power and way cheaper used/new if you buy and insurance
Excluding the RS 660 from the list is a good choice. That is absolutely not beginner friendly. The absolute pile of RS 660s on Copart suggest a lot of people got in over their head.
We have the same CBR500R in the states. For some reason they over exaggerated its performance in this video. People forget that the CBR500R was originally designed to compete against the Ninja 300 in performance. A new 2021 CBR500R is still not any faster than a 2013 CBR500R.
Zero SR. 70 hp, 116 lb/ft torque. A smooth 0-60 in 3.3 seconds with a top speed of 102 mph. Beats all of these in everyday riding ... as long as you don't plan on riding more than an hour and a half.

2017 SV650 here... beast of a bike for a beginner. Just my opinion. All depends on the riders mindset though. I like to drive quick not fast and it does that perfectly. But not necessarily “safely”.
Hell yeah. 2017 390 duke. What I started on, and going on 2 years with it I still love zipping around through the city with it.
How's the reliability on those?
@@PumaM90 gen 1 had problems. Gen 2 is much more reliable but then again that is based on the owner, maintenance, and break in.

For a normie add 1 second this numbers.
@@Fearless154 I have less than a year of riding under my belt and I love this bike lol
@@ischwhit6747
The bike is great, but my point is that you won't do 0-60 in 3s and 1/4 mile in 10.9s.
You need a lot of experience purely drag racing to achieve this.
Buying one today!
@@monplatz good choice, boss
no matter what bike you get, if you got at least one brain cell you gonna be as fast as the speed limit, so fuck top speed and go for torque
Which one would you recommend for torque?
@@PumaM90 here's where i disagree with the yam team, since they reccomend single cylinders, i can't stand the sound of them it makes my head hurt, in my opinion most inline 4 are a waste of money, just look up bikes with twin engines and how they are tuned in the rpms and pick what you think looks cool
@@PumaM90 mt 07 has alot of torque you can wheelie it in like the first 3 gears lol but i love those bikes so i leaned towards them plus they ard really well priced and can sound amazing with exhaust
i bought a 2007 sv650s with a sports exhaust last week as my first bike :) i love it
Kawasaki 650 honestly is probably the best started bike its what im starting on rn and honestly I absolutely love that thing it has some of the pep of a sports bike that i wanted but not too much to where it will kill you you can have fun on it has the power for that but as long as you can control yourself and understand your limits you will be fine
So satisfying to see papa yams videos and have your bike on top of his list again 🥰
79$ a year....MEANWHILE IN CANADA its 79 a month for a 43 yr old with 20 yrs experience and no tickets
I know a guy who has a yzf r6 yammy and he only pays like just under 100 for the year for his bike its not full coverage and its not financed and under 10 years of riding also in canada
@@Mr_N0_0ne definitely Alberta. Its the wild west compared to Ontario.
@@mpmagnussen sounds like you guys over there are getting screwed lol at least you have nice lakes!. To be fair that is a bike that is already paid off and with the lowest insurance not full coverage or anything
But it is plenty fast enough imo , I really wouldn't even say its just a beginer bike the 650 class, experienced riders love them too
SUZUKI SV650..

😊👍🏻
Progressive charges a couple hundred bucks more than Geico for LESS coverage. Adding a 2nd bike w/ progressive cost about 50-60% the cost of the 1st bike's insurance (both bikes sub 400cc). Geico basically charges only the cost of 1 bike since realistically only one bike is on the road at one time. And more coverage. Recently switched from Prog.
Just bought my first bike, a '21 GSX-S750Z ABS. I absolutely love it and it is as slow or as fast as i want it to be.
You said 4.19 seconds, but put 4.9 seconds.... which is it????
i thought i will regret my decision to start on cbr1000rr-r but doing better than I thought its a such a power machine i love it my friends love it too they are on r1 and s1000rr we always go on rides on weekends its so much fun
Progressive isn’t the best insurance for motorcycles, but an ad is a ad. Lol get the 💰!
Put us on then
Geico 100%
Geico State Farm, just check policy coverage. Some don’t cover accidents with only you involved. It has to be another vehicle involved to cover it.

Just got the ninja 400 and all my squid buddies are jealous. Thanks, papa yams!
For the Duke 390 Yammi is saying 0-60 in 4.19 seconds, but the caption says 4.9 - who is right?
Well since the 401 did it in 4.15 I'm assuming the caption maker was asleep on the job.
I’m sure it’s 4.9...if that
I think it's also 4.9 as the ninja 400 is faster at around 4.5 seconds
Definitely 4.9
Also talking about 401 while showing 701.. inconsistency is consistent with this one ^^
Got a 2004 1150rs for my first bike two days ago. I'm hooked.
RC 390 ... 2022 model is gem .. 180kmph clocked on Rokbogoros
Started on a gsxs 750. Now 3 months later I'm ready for 1000
Picking my gsx s750 up next week. My first bike too.
I'm actually looking at a BMW G310R as a beginner bike. No, I'm not a future GS boi, I just think that the G310R is a cool little bike
@@Liberty4Ever we don't really have many Chrysler Pacificas where I live so I guess I don't have to worry about that lol
Be careful about inexpensive insurance. It's not like the companies or policies are bad; it's just what it covers. Cheap policies are generally liability only, it covers people or property that you damage, not collision or medical for the driver.
You know - if it wasn't for the crazy engine - the MT09 could easily be a great beginner bike - the ergos are so laid back.
Thats why they have a mt07
Bought my first bike, '86 VF500F Interceptor. Should be fun
Considered an Aprilia RS660?
@@victorionut9133 actually have had the R7 for a couple months now and love it, I wanted a beginner bike and the RS660 seemed like it was starting to go over that category in to more of an intermediate bike. My issue was also spending an extra $3k for technology that would be overwhelming and not something I could use to its potential and Italian bikes are a nightmare from what I hear to work on compared to their Japanese counterparts. Worry free when getting into a new thing was the goal and I am happy I sent it.
@@charliebrown5660 good to hear man, safe riding

*ride, lol
Dangerous for your bank account maybe.
*safely buy* meaning buying without regretting buying it.
2nd bike I'm going with a ZX-6R. Can't wait
My first driven motorcycle was a Yamaha DT125. And I was just 14 back then. I needed a chair just to hop on the bike and it's not that hard to start it. I also need a fence or a wall when stopping to lean the bike and get down.

Currently saving for the Duke 390 thanks yam
I bought one this year, finally, love it. FYI KTM is releasing a 490cc lineup next year. Rumored parallel twin w/ dual exhaust.
@@godinminaar9024 oh I can wait a bit for that
11:08 - everywhere I look it says CBR650R has 94 ponies inside, not 80.
To be fair, he used Cycle Worlds dyno numbers at 80hp at the wheel, Honda probably claims 94hp at the crank. Same thing just stated differently
The power is measured what power is going to the wheels, rather than directly at the engine. Engines will always lose power once the power gets from the engine to the driveshaft to the chain to the wheels.
@@themogus Still all other bikes were shown with crank hp. :D Not too consistent. Btw the 2021 model gained a bit (0.5-1hp) at the crank compared to the 2019-20 models.
actually has 100hp. the cb650r has 95 in order to make a L approved.
94 is the crank hp, 80 is the wheel hp. 94 is the official number since that's also what's being used for calculating it for detuning (in A2 license countries).
Meanwhile in Europe I was limited to 15 bhp

Really?
Started on an 83 magna. Yes, it's cruiser shape. Yes it's a 750. Yes it's as fast as a new V-rod. It's a great bike and plenty slow down low to learn and plants fast up high to fuck around. Sucks above 100 mph (even with upgraded suspension) but amazing for 0-100 (which I do often) and handles pretty well. It's interesting to see most of the newer motovloggers not talking about these irrelevant bikes, and I don't blame them -- but I am still in love with my vf750 and am having trouble finding an "upgrade" under 5 grand (it was $1500)
Wat should I get ? St1300 might make sense but it's not much faster from 0-100 which is practically 100% of my driving :)
Its a Miracle that Cbr made into the list 😂
I have the fz07. With a tune and exhaust. Can say I went all out about 3 times. Twice on a drag strip. It has plenty of power. Will do a mid 12 pretty easy. As fast as a 50 mustang

It's fine mate. Anyone who uses the metric system has good enough braincells to convert the units on the fly, at least roughly.
I live in Brazil rn and here, my very first motorcycle is a Honda CG Titan 160cc, very basic, naked like a newborn and uglier then any other thing o earth, well, it still does pretty nice wheelies and you can make it growl like a bulldog, but it doesn't go any faster than 70-mph. My will is to when I get to the U.S.A (I am an US citizen, only I've lived most of my life in Brazil) buy a GSX R600 or a ZX6R. It Might be a huge jump, but life isn't really great if you don't mess around a little bit.
If you starter bike isn't turbo busa with NoS injection, I won't even look in your direction
I do hope that Honda will make a more interesting 500cc bike in the next couple of years for when I start out
Im 6'1 wanting to get a sports bike I'm not interested in going to the track with the bike. I've been thinking about getting the ninja 650 because of the low end torc. I like the 600cc class bikes. Going to be commuting for work. What others would you recommend, in in California.
No love for the G310R? I love the channel, dont get we wrong... but I felt it should have a place
Still buying a RS660 as my first, so many safety features and if I truly didn't trust myself I could cut power back until I do and its gorgeous😍
If it was available in the U.S., the ZX-25R would probably make it to this list 😅

My ninja 650 was a perfect beginner bike. Not too much not too little.

Both of the ninja's have the naked z versions. I got the Z650 and it's been fine with everything I throw at it.
Good job Yammi !lol
I came here to have you tell me to get an RS660, and I’m leaving here with the impression you told me to get the RS660
Any machine that does under a 4 second 0-60 is NOT a suitable beginner machine, 2 or 4 wheels.
Ehh I learned to drive in a stang pushing 700 whp with a clutch that weighed as much as a cinder block 😭👍🏼
Ok but I did do my fundamentals in a 2008 Impala
So I’m trying to buy my first motorcycle next month. I’m trying to decide if a 400cc bike or 650 as a starter bike. Not trying to over think it either but wanna be sure I pick the right decision. Any words of wisdom?
Get the 400
Honestly your maturity and age make a difference but the sub 400cc bikes you will still love and get to use all the power. The 650s are alot for beginners that why he recommends like if you are almost 30 and can be mature enough to not kill yourself on the 650 you can start on one but he mostly recommends smaller bikes to learn on cause its safer and useable power and way cheaper used/new if you buy and insurance
Bro just hates the cbr500r
3 year old 650s are great buys
Got a vitpilen 401 hoping to graduate to the svart 701
I’m more of a kawi Z400 boo maself... baring in mind I live in the UK so will have to wait till I’m 19 😔
Excluding the RS 660 from the list is a good choice. That is absolutely not beginner friendly. The absolute pile of RS 660s on Copart suggest a lot of people got in over their head.
Maybe in us you have diferent cbr 500 in israel its 6.5 second to 60 its weights a lot i smoke this bike with my ninja 400
And it also 47hp
We have the same CBR500R in the states. For some reason they over exaggerated its performance in this video. People forget that the CBR500R was originally designed to compete against the Ninja 300 in performance. A new 2021 CBR500R is still not any faster than a 2013 CBR500R.
i kinda wanted to get an h2r for a beginner bike bc i dont want to keep buying a whole bunch of bikes
1 bike and 1 casket, you're set for life!
Zero SR. 70 hp, 116 lb/ft torque. A smooth 0-60 in 3.3 seconds with a top speed of 102 mph. Beats all of these in everyday riding ... as long as you don't plan on riding more than an hour and a half.
