As a painter a great tip would be to use a mini roller. If something cannot be sprayed the next best thing is to always use a mini roller. Doesn't matter what it is. Could be kitchen cabinets, trim or doors, anything at all. Better quality finish everytime as well as a much more even coat of paint.
Just some helpful tips: 1.Make sure your surface area is clean. Prep is EVERYTHING when painting. 2.Sand down the surface with a 220-400 grit sand paper to promote bonding for the paint. 3. Use a tack clothing to pick up any little particles that might still be around. 4. The little bubbles are called fish eyes and can be caused by multiple things ex:incorrect prep/the way the product is made or the chemical process between the paint and the tubs material. 5. Ventilation saves lives. Do it, wear a mask and don't think twice about it. These paints are strong and not good for your lungs. 6. Most importantly! Have fun and enjoy the process 😊
Great video. We are a professional refinishing company. When using these products, a ducted exhaust fan is recommended. We have tried almost all of the diy kits on the market to see how the hold up and what is needed to remove them. The finish used at the factory on fiberglass tubs and surrounds is a 2 part urethane topcoat, crosslink primer and expoxy primer. We end using $250+ just in materials to refinish a tub. The right product and correct tools are needed for a finish to last and not yellow over time. Refinishing is way less expensive than replacing a tub, but most diy kits will fail and yellow. If a professional refinisher is used, the life span is the same as a new tub at a fraction of the cost of replacement. We see a lot of diy tubs we have to correct and end spending more money in the long run. If you have the money to spend, use a professional on this to save money and also cut down on the risk of breathing toxic chemicals. Most professionals today use low voc materials for refinishing. The product does cost more, but safety is key. Again great video, just read msds sheets on these products. They are harmful. If you are trying to buy 6 months to 1 year on your tub then use the kits.
yep, most all of the diy videos that get updated by the channel report that they quickly yellowed and cost way more to correct the problem than if they had just hired a professional to do the job.
I've watched at least a dozen videos on how to do this (refinish) and no one ever considers the tools needed (sander, etc) and go into terminology that I end up having to Google; but your vid got right down to it and explained it nicely for someone who has never done it before.
I've not refinished a tub/surround before, but I've done cleanup/renewal. Here are a few tips (some of which have been mentioned): - Ventilate the area via the bathroom ceiling fan, box fans, air filtration cleaners. Wear a ventilator mask. - Allow extended time for this project: there are no ways to do this correctly quickly. This should not be done while the unit is inhabited. - Remove the fixtures (stopper, drain shoe, overflow plate, etc.), prior to the job. Tape off the exposed openings. - Fully clean all surfaces that are to be painted. Paint will not fully adhere to unclean surfaces. It may take several hours for solvents to remove stains and gunk. - Sand the surfaces prior to painting. You should use a mechanical sanding tool for this step. - Remove the grit and fine dust with a vacuum and dustless detailing cloths. - You may need to allow a minimum or 16 hours for the steps listed above. - Apply single coats of paint using a small, short-nap smooth rollers. Allow the coats to fully dry (at least two hours for each of three coats). - Do not use the tub for at least 72 hours. Replace or re-install the fixtures. The real takeaway from this is that the "money-saving" aspect of this operation is only derived by allowing plenty of time ...

A few tips, cuz I just used this stuff today, you want to sand your tub and tile for better durability, use a quality respirator, feather edges if your going to stop in-between, and a dense foam roller pack with foam brushes. If you plan to do this again :)
@@heidih3048 the tub I refinished was in a complete fixer upper and the tub was horrible and cast iron so I started with 60 grit and worked my way down to 120. If your tile is a harder you could do the same but if you have a "softer" tile I'd start with like an 80 and work down. But the easiest would be to just get a pack of mixed grit sandpaper and see how the tile you have reacts to it as you go. You essentially want to just remove the shine from your tile without being able to see any scratches. If that makes sense.:)
Whichever roller you decide to do should be dense, thin nap (1/16inch) , and have a SOLVENT RESISTANT CORE. This will ensure your roller will put a smooth even coat on your surface without breaking down or falling apart

I'm a professional bathtub refinisher for the past 10 years. Not here to judge anyone just give you all an advice with rustoleum. This stuff yellows pretty quickly if you use some abrasive cleaners. Just stay with any eco friendly cleaners, dish soap, and the best is actually car wash soap. You should be ok for 2-4 years. Also that bath math if it has cup suctions is a no no, every time you pull it, you forcing the paint to come off. The paint will come off there, the question is when. I will suggest to put something permanent like an antislip stickers. Or even a math, something that stays permanent.

I did this today to my shower. It looks pretty good, one thing I'd note is that it's not really like painting. Both the smell and consistency (as she said, kind of milky) remind me more of staining than painting. Also, had the same issue using a foam roller as she mentioned, it started to fall apart and I had to pick little foam bits out and finish with the brush. Even if it goes on thin and milky it becomes VERY sticky which was what was causing the foam to pull away after a while.

How is this tub holding up now? 2 years later? I've seen a few people saying it doesn't last longer than a year and makes things worse in the long run?
Hello! So you didn’t sand the bathtub nor the tile, have you had any problems with the paint yet, like the paint coming off or chips?? Thank you in advance
I’ve done this a couple times and a goo investment is in a professional cleaning chemical and liquid sanding product, soap and water just want provided lasting finish, secondly when using a roller do not use any kind of roller with nap, no matter the quality that will lift paint and your tub will feel like 80 grit sandpaper when it drys, I use the very small (3/4 in diameter x6” long) that are almost smooth -0- nap. Brush’s no matter how good you are leave some brush marks, the no nap rollers live the tub smooth as new. The hard work in cleaning, sanding and cleaning again is where your effort pays off. Good luck.
@kgkendrew1 Yes you can roll but the roller head needs to be one that is about 3/4 to 1 inch around and smooth like used for decorative work, not wall painting. Clean very good before sanding with 320 grit wet sand paper. Sanding wet cleans up good and reduces the risk of dust in your job. I used the Rust-o- product the last time and it went on great and self smoothed out nicely. Spend the extra time at the drain area cleaning and sanding and insuring the area is very dry. Good luck.
OMG! This is awesome! I colored a dress black in my tub back in April. Unfortunately my tub has not recovered like I thought it would now being October. I’d like to see if they have in the brown family. Thanks so much!
It was bubbling up because you didnt sand the tub. For any of these products, you have to sand the tub with a finer sand paper to rough up the surface and remove the gloss from the factory coating. They also recommend using a foam mini roller, then the tub wont look like its been painted...
good job, i too have used this product. same problems with damaging my cheap roller but end result was terrific. i have used many chemicals in my life my father was a mechanic, exposed to many toxic materials and i have to say nothing scrambled my brains like this product. instructions tell you to paint 5 minutes then get fresh air for 5 then repeat. trust me listen to instructions. i had a box fan in window, the central air on, fabricated a mask tube hooked up to air away from bathroom and it still rocked my brains. i am goin to repoxy tub again but will use my brother to work 5 mins in between to be safe.
Thanks for this video. I just put the first coat on and you saved me a lot of anguish. The sticky paint on your hands comes off easily with cooking oil. Rub it all over your hands, then wash them in soap and water.
Nice video... Plenty of before and after info.... thinking of doing the same...I just did tile the other day... Now tub looks horrible....lol ... nice video..... Semper Fi Blake
I'm thrilled to find this video. I had repairs done on my tub and who knows what paint was used? It all wore off and is unsightly. Does anyone know how long this paint will last?
Looks great. You could have bought or rented a paint sprayer and saved yourself hours of brushing...and your knees. Also, you may be able to go back over the tile with some beige grout for contrast...but not sure if it will stick. You didn't say whether you sanded the tub before painting, so I'm curious if it will peel - please update us on how it holds up in 6 months or so..
I am so glad I went thru reading the comments. I was wondering if you could use a paint sprayer. I just got 1 from HSN and I am going to try it this weekend!!! TY for your video post and Thanks to all that comment!!! It all helps!!!
True but spraying is an art form. Much like doing drywall or taping and mudding. Someone who doesn't do it very often is going to end up with a horrendous result trying to spray if they don't do it on a regular basis...
Great advice. I’ve got mine ready to go. I just have to figure out my shower situation. I think you’re 100% right about the heavy water areas. Great video
@@Thesmallerhalf do you think this will be plenty thick/strong for areas of peeling? I plan on getting off all lose and then sand it down a bit, give it a good clean and scrub and go to town. You gave me some much needed confidence here. 🤜🏼💥
To clarify, how many kits were required for this bathroom transformation? Did I understand you when you said you purchased 2 for the tiles and 1 more to do the tub? 3 kits in total? I’m trying to judge how many I’ll need.
Does this hold up - or does it stain easily, how will it handle hard water and hard water cleaners/basic shower cleaners? Looks good originally how’s the long haul?
I just bought my first home, the tub and shower are yellow, but same size as the one in this video. How many kits do i need to purchase? How did it last? Wbat prep work is required besides cleaning, removing caulk and sanding? Thank you
As a painter a mini roller works wonders on these projects and u can literally just pour little puddles into the bottom of tub and rub it out so to speak push it around don’t roll like u would a wall but a mini rolller is def the way to go and by keeping the product in the tub pouring little puddles and pushing around at the same depth will save the amount of product you use/time and the roller is given lol just a smooth sleeve. Them cheap brushes leave brush strokes and strings from the brush will rip off and stick to the tub. Hope that helps
Thanks it's wonderful what a good video that's going to save me so much money by the way what was that you had mounted on the back of the tub on the wall?
The mask you were using is a particulate version only good for when you are sanding "dust only"! While painting you need a vapor mask designed for the fumes! Usually 2 part paints "using an activator" have extreme health issues so the proper respirator is a must!!!!! 50 years in a body shop wise! 👍
Hi and thanks for the video ! I know this is an old post but wondering if you could kindly provide some advice . I live in the uk and I have an acrylic/hard plastic white bath tub and want to change the inside colour to blue . I know about the product you mentioned but it’s not available in the uk and it only comes in white. The surface condition is brand new already and is very smooth but clean . Wondering if you can suggest a paint I could use and if I need a primer or any overcoat to go with it - obviously it has to withstand water and heat without flaking etc You’d think there would be loads of varieties of paints available but doing some research online the only innediate paints I can find that might do the job even though I’m not too sure is either plastikot or rustolium all purpose outdoor paint - and rustolium crystal clear gloss laquer as an overcoat protector perhaps ? Not sure if perhaps hottub paint might do as they tend to be made from fibreglass ? I’d appreciate any info you could provide ? And also as the tub is brand new will I still need to do all the preparation you mentioned other than just a quick clean ? Cheers
I think even if it is new you would still need some prep work to sand off the finish before applying the paint. Try searching online for a product that is for bathtubs. I’m not sure if just any old paint would work. The Rustoleum product mixes paint with apoxy. Good luck!
I’m doing this project. My apartment tub is awful looking and maintenance won’t do anything to fix it. I have experience with epoxy at work. Yes definitely important to wear a good quality fume mask. And yes, it is epoxy 2 parts, so needs to be used up within the window suggested,6hrs was it? Can’t wait to have a better tub. My solution to not being able to use the tub for 3 days is to use a friend’s slower or go to the gym. Showers are included even if you don’t work out!!!
Question...what is the after care? I mean, can I scrub the tub like I usually do to clean? And, will it cover the blue-ness that comes through when the enamel starts wearing off? Is the kit enough to do 3-4 coats?
Omg I'm in the process of trying to figure out how to get this old looking new again. I was supposed to come across your channel! Thanks for sharing. We are also a family vlogging channel. Took my notes and can't wait to redo my bathroom.
I know you used Lysol cleaner to keep the tub clean. But are you able to use scrub brushes and normal cleaning brushes for soap scum and hard water on your tub now since doing this project?

How is this tub holding up now? 2 years later? I've seen a few people saying it doesn't last longer than a year and makes things worse in the long run?
Any feedback on how it’s been after using the bathtub several months? Any cracks, peel offs?
Thank you for your tips. I'm painting my tub today. By the way, I loved Elder Holland message
Hello! So you didn’t sand the bathtub nor the tile, have you had any problems with the paint yet, like the paint coming off or chips?? Thank you in advance
It's been two years since you did your tub how has it held up
I’ve done this a couple times and a goo investment is in a professional cleaning chemical and liquid sanding product, soap and water just want provided lasting finish, secondly when using a roller do not use any kind of roller with nap, no matter the quality that will lift paint and your tub will feel like 80 grit sandpaper when it drys, I use the very small (3/4 in diameter x6” long) that are almost smooth -0- nap. Brush’s no matter how good you are leave some brush marks, the no nap rollers live the tub smooth as new. The hard work in cleaning, sanding and cleaning again is where your effort pays off. Good luck.
Thank you so much for your tips! Very helpful!! Have a great day😀
@kgkendrew1 Yes you can roll but the roller head needs to be one that is about 3/4 to 1 inch around and smooth like used for decorative work, not wall painting. Good luck.
@kgkendrew1 The instructions on the box says` brush or spray' not to roll but I rolled one tub with one small foam roller and worked out good.
You're talented and patiant girl wow ماشاءالله
Thanks!
OMG! This is awesome! I colored a dress black in my tub back in April. Unfortunately my tub has not recovered like I thought it would now being October. I’d like to see if they have in the brown family. Thanks so much!
Nice job. Thanks so much helping me do my project. From Canada 🇨🇦.
You’re welcome! Good luck!
It was bubbling up because you didnt sand the tub. For any of these products, you have to sand the tub with a finer sand paper to rough up the surface and remove the gloss from the factory coating. They also recommend using a foam mini roller, then the tub wont look like its been painted...
OH! We were just talking about refinishing our tubs...what great timing for this video. Thanks for sharing!
I couldn't believe how easy it was and what an amazing difference it made!! So worth it!!
good job, i too have used this product. same problems with damaging my cheap roller but end result was terrific. i have used many chemicals in my life my father was a mechanic, exposed to many toxic materials and i have to say nothing scrambled my brains like this product. instructions tell you to paint 5 minutes then get fresh air for 5 then repeat. trust me listen to instructions. i had a box fan in window, the central air on, fabricated a mask tube hooked up to air away from bathroom and it still rocked my brains. i am goin to repoxy tub again but will use my brother to work 5 mins in between to be safe.
Yes. I agree!! It was strong! Such a good idea to get help and rotate!!
Thanks for this video. I just put the first coat on and you saved me a lot of anguish. The sticky paint on your hands comes off easily with cooking oil. Rub it all over your hands, then wash them in soap and water.
Great tip! Thanks!
It looks nice 👍 come back and let us know how it holds up please amazing before and after tfs💕
We will! Thank you!!
How is it holding up?
Nice video... Plenty of before and after info.... thinking of doing the same...I just did tile the other day... Now tub looks horrible....lol ... nice video..... Semper Fi Blake
You are professional master GIR. Greetings from New York.🎉
Awesome. My bathroom is Pepto bismo pink.. I will be doing mine over
I'm thrilled to find this video. I had repairs done on my tub and who knows what paint was used? It all wore off and is unsightly. Does anyone know how long this paint will last?
Ours is on 18 months and still looking good. ruclips.net/video/CZRCdz6VcRo/видео.html
Great tips! Thank you!
I am so glad I went thru reading the comments. I was wondering if you could use a paint sprayer. I just got 1 from HSN and I am going to try it this weekend!!! TY for your video post and Thanks to all that comment!!! It all helps!!!
You could see and the grime on the bottom, so it is definitely going to peel.
True but spraying is an art form. Much like doing drywall or taping and mudding. Someone who doesn't do it very often is going to end up with a horrendous result trying to spray if they don't do it on a regular basis...
Tip: hit the three dots in the corner then hit quality and set to 1080. You’ll be able to see the details better.
Thank you!!
I didn't realize this was even a feature hahaha. Wow. So much better
Thank you
Great advice.
I used 1 kit for the tub and 1 for the tile. Sorry if I was confusing!
Don't let it thicken first that's why it tears roller apart it's made to just roll on and self level with out build up
Thank you for the tip!
Does this hold up - or does it stain easily, how will it handle hard water and hard water cleaners/basic shower cleaners? Looks good originally how’s the long haul?
It’s been over a year and still doing great! I think it holds up really well!
I like to know if I can use a sprayer to apply?
I would think so.
It’s looks fabulous. You said you needed 2 cans right? Thank you
Going to try this thanks for making this video on how to DYI it yourself! Your bath tub looks awesome! I hope mine looks just as nice.
Thanks! Good luck!!
can this be used on white tiles above the tub just like the one in your video please advise
Yes! I painted my tub and my tile. This video shows me painting the tile ruclips.net/video/O-b934Q4u4c/видео.html
I can’t believe what a difference that made ! Need to try this
We love it!! So happy we did it!!
Can this product be used on bathroom floor tiles?
Amazing job. Im gonna tackle my bathroom tomorrow
Awesome! Good luck!
No sanding or removing the fixtures?
Does it still look nice after 2 years?
I sanded just a bit. 😀 here is our update!

Nice video:) Try caulking the tape on the side you need sealed. This will prevent bleeding. Use it sparingly.
That’s a great tip! Thanks so much!!
Did mine with mini roller looks great
I just bought my first home, the tub and shower are yellow, but same size as the one in this video. How many kits do i need to purchase? How did it last? Wbat prep work is required besides cleaning, removing caulk and sanding? Thank you
If it is just the tub you should only need one. That is the only prep work that I did. We are working on 2 years and ours is doing great!
It is a shampoo dispenser.
@@Thesmallerhalf well that's beautiful you have to show how you would put that one up 😳
Can the paint roller and brush reuse again?
No. They become rock hard.
The mask you were using is a particulate version only good for when you are sanding "dust only"! While painting you need a vapor mask designed for the fumes! Usually 2 part paints "using an activator" have extreme health issues so the proper respirator is a must!!!!! 50 years in a body shop wise! 👍
Thank You for sharing this comment! It is very helpful and I hope others will read it too before starting their home project 😁
I use Dawn and baby to remove any paint from my body. Sometimes a scrubbie needed but the oil helps not to have very dry skin after cleaning.
Great tip thank you!
Do u think one can will do a tub and wall like your kids bathroom?
Good luck!
How do you remove the rust around the drain? You can't paint over rust.
Sand just to scuff so paint have something to hold onto?
I think it removes the shiny texture.
I have a plastic tub and sidings… any pointers?
I have heard that people painted their plastic tub and it worked great! Good luck!
Can you use it in the bathroom sink too
Yes , I also did our sinks. Thanks for watching
1st Time Watching & I Needed This.
Wow ! You did a great job , it looks absolutely beautiful !!
Thank you!
Does it peel or chip? Do u need special cleaners?
Omg I'm in the process of trying to figure out how to get this old looking new again. I was supposed to come across your channel! Thanks for sharing. We are also a family vlogging channel. Took my notes and can't wait to redo my bathroom.
That’s awesome!! So excited for you!! It completely changes your bathroom!! We will check out your channel😀
@@Thesmallerhalf Thanks a bunch!
Your welcome!!
Just wondering how well has it held up? Does washing it with cleaning products messed with it at all?
What do you use to clean it later?
Any brush marks? I just primer my tub now I need to get the paint etc but wondering if I should roll it on or brush it ?
I tried the roller but mine fell apart and left lint. I liked the brush better and didn’t have brush lines.
I have a quick question I’m about to put in my tub, the wall tile and the tub one kit you think 1 kit covered enough ?
Thank you
Can this give bathfitter plastic tub a ceramic gloss look?
Mine turned out more of a matte finish so I’m not sure.
I know you used Lysol cleaner to keep the tub clean. But are you able to use scrub brushes and normal cleaning brushes for soap scum and hard water on your tub now since doing this project?
Can this work for a plastic bathtub?
Did you sand the wall and or tub first? Was 1 kit enough for both walls and tub?
Hi, I would like to know if you had to sand the tub, please.
Yes it is suggested to sand the tub before painting. Good luck😀
How did you clean the tub before you painted?
For how long we have to wait after 1st coat?
Now that it's been 3 years since you made this video. How long did it last before having to refinish it again?
How long is it good for though? Heard repainting only lasts a few years
Here is our 18 month update video
ruclips.net/video/CZRCdz6VcRo/видео.html
Wow! That looks 10 x better ! TFS
Thank you!! We think so too!!
Do it clean with regular bathroom cleaner over time?
I use a regular bathroom cleaner.
? Is there any other process that I could use that won’t take three days to dry cause I only have 1 bathroom
Likely this is epoxy based? & waiting may have allowed it to cure somewhat in the can. & let you paint thicker layers. thanks for sharing. 🙃
That makes sense! Thanks!
How long does this product hold up.
Thank you for show me that,i was going to hire somebody to do that, and its so expensive,i am gonna try this .Appreciate 😊
Will cleaning products cause paint to come off?
Thank You. I now know I can do my bath tub & shower
Great!
♥️ Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! 🙏
I will definitely table my bathtub after watching this!
That’s great!! Good luck!!
This is out of stock in white everywhere. Do you know where I can find it or do have experience with using the almond color? Our tub right now is an older yellowish tint. We would like it to be white.
We got ours on Amazon but I’ve also seen it at Walmart and Home Depot. Good luck!! We haven’t tried the almond but I’m sure it would look great!!
Also, which way did you face the fan into the room or out of the room
I faxed it out so it drew out the fumes!
does the paint hold up to cleaning the tile with scrub pads or more thick course towels or bleach based cleaners?
I have used Lysol spray cleaner and comet with a sponge
@@Thesmallerhalf i thank you
