If you want to bring up his affection efficiently, friendship pendants are great for that. Plus the effects stack if equip multiple of them. You'll need Orichalc out of the mines to craft them. Preparing for the mines can be another ordeal though since you'll need lots of food and ideally, have your Hammer and Hoe equipped with Green Wonderfuls to remove stamina usage and Orange Wonderfuls to increase the amount of materials you get.
