It’s as interesting for me to play as quake or half life, and I feel like people don’t see it that way. When you think of a random thing to do, and try to do it that thing actually happens. In call of duty you have to obey its rules at every turn. That type of shit still blows my mind cuz most modern military shooters, especially modern battlefield, have terrible linear campaigns with no room for skill or creativity.

I just started re-playing both of these on Series X and they’re better than I remember. Great timing Gman!On a 16 channel Atmos setup using the DSU or Auro3D upmixer, it sounds exponentially better than the last time I played this during my 2nd year in the Army using a simple 2.1 setup. Your quote about sound design is spot on, I currently work with quite a few developers using the Dolby Atmos renderer to mix and properly place objects in the immersive sound field as opposed to legacy codecs which use channel based sound. It does require the user to have a minimum of 2 (in all reality 4 for the proper imaging of front to back and side to side overhead audio) but the difference when properly placed and calibrated is night and day compared to a conventional 5 or 7 channel bed layer setup or Soundbar. Atmos for headphones relies on HTRF (head tracking related function) which is far from being perfected and the results vary greatly in a similar way that there’s excellent examples of native Dolby Atmos and DTS:X soundtracks as well as sub par ones.

Man you mentioning Battlefield Modern Combat just brought back some amazing memories I had of that game. Probably still have it and a ps2 console, might go and play it again.
Also imo the BF BC2 multiplayer was the best out of them all.

That's called Camouflage. Despite what popular media makes you think, soldiers don't typically wear the tactical equivalent of a high-vis vest to war.

Modern Combat was one of my most favorite games; a bit arcadey, but once you get the momentum going, you become an actual Super Soldier! I need to note that for my Awards List.

"You can't really tell enemies frombthe frees or the bush" yeah that's kind of how camouflage works. Yeah in arcade style shooters having having enemies in bright red jump suits might work but in a military shooter that really is how it should be.

I spent so much time when I first got battlefield bad company just blowing up bridges and trying to get across them in various states of destruction. As well as blowing up that whole town with the artillery strike phone thing just because I didn't want to fight the machine gunners in a "fair" fight. The second game was even cooler in my opinion for the story. The maps were great in both games for sure, as well as the set pieces and what not of the second one.

They really towed the line on the T rating aswell. Tons of swearing (probably the only T rated game I've ever played where people regularly yelled "sh*t" and "b*tch") and extreme violence. I guarantee you the only thing that stopped it being M rated was the lack of blood.

Do yourself a favor and search up Bad Company 2 idle conversations on RUclips. Basically, when you went idle in game, the characters would start talking about random shit. I would come home from school and actually listen the conversations whenever I wanted a good laugh.
Honestly, after listening to the conversations again today, you can tell that they basically just recorded an unscripted podcast with the cast and cut it up for the game. Either way, the humor holds up and I promise you won't regret giving it a listen.
(One thing I'm curious about is whether they did the same thing with the first Bad Company. I seem to have memories of it, but I no longer have a working Xbox to play it on and searching RUclips seems to only bring up Bad Company 2 results.)

I think Battlefield 2: Modern Combat's campaign is incredibly underrated. It's exactly what someone (like me) who played the series up to that point would expect a story-focused BF game to look like, with more emphasis on the factions and the war than on individual characters, and taking part in large-scale battles where you fight alongside dozens of friendly soldiers rather than just a couple of squad-mates.

Man i missed Sarge and the boys, the banter the squad had in BF:BC2 was priceless. I used to slow play the hell out of missions just to see what they would talk about if you didnt rush through the missions. When Flynn was killed and went to the great bong in the sky i had to take a moment of silence and rip a fat bong rip for him. That game was the highest point in the Battlefield series in my opinion, it all started going down hill after that...

I love seeing reviews of this game. Back when proper demos were still a thing and oh boy, still listening to Milt Buckner - The Beast til this very day! I still look back at it with fond memories. Replayed the games last year, still loving it! I still remember completing the single player of BF:BC2 at the time. ''The war isn't over, they're coming through Alaska.'' and then I started the multiplayer and went directly into a match, I got parachuted into Nelson Bay. Felt like a direct continuation of the single player into multiplayer. Could have been just luck that I got Nelson Bay d: Still a great memory and experience!

BC2 was by FAR my favorite game growing up, especially Vietnam. I can remember role playing as a VC soldier with a PPSh on Hamburger Hill, everything around me being burnt from napalm. Over ten years later and I still haven’t found anything that captured the magic from this game. I still have a photo from when I finally hit the esteemed level 50 with an uncle and cousin there to witness it. It really was one of a kind

I will say this about the smoke effects and the blizzard/sandstorm blocking your view; it's a Fog of War moment. Blizzards obscure your vision to an insane amount along with sandstorms. Dust and smoke from blowing something up or from a grenade detonating will obscure your sight and make you unsure of where you need to go if you are not paying attention. It forces you to change your tactics if you are not careful. It's an amazing feature that gets you more in tune with how you play instead of the run-and-gun style.

You missed part of the point of Preston Marlowe. Yes, he is a bit of a self insert, but he is made to be deliberately not like the other guys. He is in Bad Company, after all. Imagine being this guy he just wants to go home and gets stringed along by idiots into dangerous situations like this by them. Hell they Don't even seem to care at first when they thought he died at the beginning. In order for that to work he can't have a strong personality. He also works as a bit of a narrator.
