These are Lydia's five tips. They start at 3:10
    1. Take resposibility.
    2. Have fun.
    3. Spend a lot of time with the language.
    4. Use effective methods.

Lydia is completely right. I'm recently venturing into the polyglot life and studying my fourth language. I taught myself Japanese, never had a teacher and now I can have conversations and read novels. We are not especially geniuses or anything like that at all -- we are just passionate and we love doing it as a hobby!
I am an English teacher (ha) but I tell all my students to treat me as a SUPPLEMENT, and come to class to ask me questions and go over some things together.
They need to do the work on their own.
Completely right about teaching not being effective -- we are not magicians!

I totaly agree with you. I cannot teach someone any language, I can only make him learn by himself. I am a teacher too, German 🙂

I am also a teacher and i cannot stress out how important it is to also learn by yourself and treat the teacher as a supplement and not like a magician!

Yes, of course I'm practice my listening and my pronunciation every day. I listen to audio with video and at the same time I listen and repeat in order to improve my listening, speaking skills and learn new vocabulary. I practice from house. I use an audiobook free in order to improve my reading and writing skills. In my opinion it's very important to practice a language using whole skills togather.

My biggest struggle is learning words and recognizing them in a sentence. Like I can memorize maybe 50 words a day but when they're spoken in a sentence they just glide by unnoticed and then I just forget them after like a week

Great advice! I've only got so far as listening to No. 2, but I paused to say that when I first moved to France in 2000, I didn't have the patience to read anything in French, but I started reading the first Harry Potter book in French, and it was *perfect* because I got so absorbed it in that I couldn't put it down. The words I didn't know I would underline, and then look them up at the end of the chapter (because I didn't want to stop to look them up while I was reading). I ended up reading all the Harry Potter books in French (except for the last one, because it came out when I was back in the States, and I couldn't wait for the translation to come out in French). The Potter books are great because the early ones are simple, and they became increasingly more difficult as they go along. If you persevere, your competence will keep pace with the books!

Nice! Thanks to the author of the channel! The problem with many people is that they want to take a "magic pill" or get "secret knowledge" and immediately have skills and abilities. However, the truth of life is that knowledge, skills, and abilities do not come by themselves. You can't learn a foreign language without doing anything, without wasting your time and effort, just like you can't learn to ride a bike lying on a comfy couch, listening to lectures and watching videos about "modern methods of learning" on a bike. To really learn something, you have to really practice every day. You're going to fall down while you're learning, and you're going to get bumps - that's normal! The ups and downs of learning are an integral part of our lives. Motivation from success and depression from failure will always be your study companions. However, every student has problems in his or her studies that he or she lacks the knowledge to solve. It can be: poor memorization of words; no progress in language learning; the student can speak, but does not understand speech by ear; misunderstanding of grammar; incorrect pronunciation, etc. Agree that a problem you don't know how to solve is very demotivating. In order to find the answer to our question we have to spend a lot of time to read videos, articles and books by polyglots. In today's world, we have to solve problems as quickly as possible. I don't have time to study and analyze a huge amount of information. My goal is to master the basic knowledge of a foreign language as quickly as possible and already start earning money effectively in the international arena. I settled on the practical guide by Yuriy Ivantsiv " Polyglot's Notes: practical tips for learning foreign language". This book is always in my bag. If I have a problem while learning a language, I quickly find the answer in this book. There are many different techniques and tips for learning a foreign language in Polyglot Notes. I have made my own individual schedule and plan for language learning. Now I know what I am going to study, how I am going to study, when I am going to study and what results I am going to achieve. No problem could stop me! With an effective language learning plan my professional skills are more and more in demand internationally every day. Friends, don't stop there! Everyone has talents that millions of people around the world need! Learn the language and make your ideas and dreams come true! Thanks to the author of the channel for the informative and useful video! Your videos motivate me.

It's not a question of being taught... I believe a language teacher is a guide and a coach and a mentor. The teacher can facilitate access to methods, tools, strategies. A teacher can teach you HOW to learn. I am an ESL teacher and as years go by I realize this more and more.

¡Estoy leyendo Harry Potter y el prisionero de Azkaban!
When I read it in English I used the shadowing method (I am German). But the Spanish pronunciation is closer to the written word. I may start doing that when all the books are through though.
También tengo una clase. Parte del tiempo es perdido por los explicaciones de cosas, que ya comprendo. Pero es muy práctica tener la posibilidad de preguntar y hablar. También me da motivación.
I used duolingo to pick up my school Spanish after not having used it for five years. After a month I was comfortable reading Harry Potter and stoped doing Spanish on duo, switching it for Russian. Now, 117 days after starting duo, I feel conversational in Spanish. My Russian skills is at around 4% on their way to conversational, with 45 of the necessary 1100h.

what she said about repetition while reading is totally true. I learned english the same way although via fanfictions. If books are too difficult at the beginning i suggest fanfictions (HP for example) which usually aren't written in an overly complicated way so they are easier to understand ^^

isn't Gold List basically SRS just with a longer span of time between repeated studying of vocab?
If not, would simply changing Anki settings to run out about two weeks before repeating cards work to mimic Gold List?

Debe ser genial el vídeo. Digo. ( Debe ser) porque no lo entiendo, apenas estoy aprendiendo el inglés. El subtítulo no me da para ponerlo en español😞

I have an interest in learning Spanish. Years ago I purchased the Berlitz Tapes for learning Spanish. My disapoinment began right from the gate as the speakers must have been a Klingons as they SPOKE AT HYPER WORP-SPEED. E-FREAKING-GAD !!!😭😱😭!!!

So It’s ok not to fully understand the texts in a novel of a different language? I’ve heard so many people say it’s not efficient

I still have a question, I have been progressing in learning French and have enough vocabulary and grammar down to understand a fair amount. I've also been using some online programs to test and track my progress and do well with them, so I know I should be able to engage in basic conversation using French, but I can't. I'm fine conversing with an automated program on my laptop, but as soon as I'm supposed to talk to another person I get extremely worried that I'll mess up or make a mistake to the point where I feel like I've forgotten every French word I ever learned in my life. What would be the best way to deal with that?

I'm very fond of languages, I'm Brazilian I speak Portuguese, of course, English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and some Esperanto. It was great to listen to you both speaking, I've noticed a mistake when the pretty girl spoke, she said " much "MORE" easier, but that's ok everybody makes mistakes. I've really loved listening to you both! Next language I'll learn is Russian then others like Dutch Arabic, and so on!

Are you sure that "much more easier" is a mistake?
