Here is my translation and performance of the famous Norwegian ballad Rolandskvadet (The Song of Roland), itself from the mediaeval French epic poem La Chanson de Roland.
The ballad details the Battle of Roncevaux Pass in 778AD and it is truly a work of art. I picked out some of my favourite stanzas to translate, and I tried to keep the wording as similar to the original Norwegian as possible, using the etymological progenitors of the Norwegian words wherever possible.
The instrument I’m playing is the talharpa. It’s amazing how dark a feeling the talharpa gives the song - I wasn’t intending for it to be so dark at first, but really I think it fits the battle aesthetic and I just rolled with it.
I hope you enjoy! Please consider subscribing if you would like to see more. You could also donate here: www.buymeacoffee.com/theskaldicbard

The song of Roland is my favourite. The man was so brave and warrior spirited that according to legend, archangel Michael himself came to that battlefield to take his soul to heaven.

As a spanish myself, the exploits of Roland were a significant part of our history and one of the decissive moments that shaped the geopolitics of the northern peninsula, though his tale tends to be shadowed away by other events like Covadonga, the battle of Clavijo (the one where Saint James appears mounted in a steed to help the christians), las Navas de Tolosa or the tale of el Cid, mainly because those were local victories in the struggle instead of a foreigner intervening wich is the case with Roland; but still, if it weren't for him, we could be living now in a muslim country vastly different from what we are

An excellent performance! I always loved this poem for the way it really captures the imagination with some of its images, such as this one:
"They fought upon the Roncevaux meadow,
They were every one losing hope,
The sun would not shine clearly
due to the smoke of human blood [which obscured it]."
Also, "hedningen" (Muslim invaders of Spain) are in some versions of the song also called "blåmennarhæren", which very politically-incorrectly is translated literally as "the army of the black[-skinned] men". "Blå" or blue in English in older times were used as a way to describe things in colour that appeared to be black.

Interesting choice of song, but not entirely surprising. The song's from around the 12th century, I think, so Old Norse isn't entirely unfeasible.
