    Is being self-centered a bad thing? Not according to the TikTok trend of Main Character Syndrome. So, how can you become the protagonist of your story? Fundamentally, Main Character Syndrome is acting as though your life is a movie, and you’re the star. It’s about living life cinematically, romanticizing even the smallest of moments, and curating the best parts of your story.
    But Main Character Syndrome can also become toxic. It might involve casting others around you as minor characters in your Oscar-worthy life -- and writing them into your story without much regard for their feelings and inner worlds. On the surface, it sounds a lot like a narcissistic personality disorder. But the reason so many are embracing it is that (in moderation) it can actually be positive and empowering, especially for those not used to feeling like a main character or being encouraged to think of themselves that way.

    I pretended to be a main character in a movie a lot. It helps reduce my anxiety and self hatered. I don’t think I’m pretty but I know others do. I do t have the highest confidence but I know when I go in a room full of men and act like I’m the main character with the camera on me doing small things to bring attention to myself I’ll catch someone’s eye and have someone to make me feel good about myself. When I’m on miserable road trips I stare out a window and have a main character monologue so I feel less alone. When I need confidence or to feel ok I’m a main character in the movie. The worst things and the best things always happen to the main character. In life I definitely am a side character in comparison to my friends and their lives but in my own world if I’m the main character most things should work out.

I'd jump into adventures and believe myself capable of anything. I remember my best friend when I was 8 thought I had some learning disability and told me "Life's not a movie". But I pursued my dreams and even though I was severely bullied, I ended up discovering I was gifted, appear on TV often and ended up with a painting at a internationally famous museum at age 10. Just want to point out that a lot of people suffering from mental health disorders that focusing entirely on themselves isn't always narcissism. PTSD, depression, and being suicidal can seem narcissistic to other people but that is far from what is actually going on. People who suffer from one of those things don't willfully ignore other people's problems. It's more like when you break your arm and need everyone's immediate attention to get help and safety. People who are suicidal, depressed, or have PTSD, aren't going to be very useful at helping any of your problems, they could get triggered by them and now your both in a worse state or they could end up hurting themselves because that sort of thing takes emotional energy. People who are unfamiliar with grief, loss, or trauma shouldn't expect someone suffering from those things to be fully functional in every way, they might seem crazy to you or like a different person than you knew before.

    The most important aspect of main character syndrome is achieving character growth in yourself. In every story, the protagonist has something they want and something they need. They're so hung up on trying to get what they want that they neglect or deny whatever is their need, which eventually becomes an obstacle to achieving their goal. They say that every story begins with a lie and ends with a truth, and only by learning the truth do you discover what you truly need. The question you should be asking yourself is "what lie do I believe right now?"

  • @s.severn
    @s.severn 3 года назад +8

    If this "syndrome" helps someone step out of their comfort zone and have more confidence that's all well and good.
    The real issue is when people start seeing themselves and their experiences as generally more important than others' and seeing others as "less than" or unimportant. "You're just a side character in my life. Why should I care about you?" type of attitude.
    Something real main characters in some movies/shows do is treat side characters badly only for it to be played off as "funny". Also, if at any point the main character DOES realize they've been a jerk, their family and friends always forgive them the second they say sorry, teaching them nothing in the process.
    If you decide to "become the main character", remember to do so with self awareness and empathy at least.

    I feel like the word "narcissistic" is thrown around a lot when discussing "main character syndrome." The truth is people throughout the times have seen themselves to be the main character. Especially during adolescent years, people feel like the whole world is watching them and what they do. Not usually in an "everyone is obsessed with me" way but more in an "if I make a mistake everyone will notice and laugh" way. I think people confuse viewing yourself as the main character with being narcissistic when really, it's a way to empower yourself. We all should live our lives like we are the main characters of our stories, because after all we are. Living like the main character of your story is taking control of your own life and cherishing the little moments. When people talk about romancing everything, it's along the lines of taking the time to appreciate the warm sunshine on your face or watching flowers dance in the breeze. We all have to be the main characters of our lives, because everything we do is from our perspective. I'm sure most people wouldn't want to feel like they are not important in their own life story. This is very different from narcissism, because while you acknowledge that you are the main character of your story, you are not the main character in others' stories. This also doesn't mean that people close to you are just "supporting roles," it just means that they are not you - it doesn't make them any less important or special. Everyone is the main character of their story, and sonder is a beautiful feeling. This trend at its core isn't about being self-centered, it's about self-empowerment, agency, and cherishing the small moments in life.

  • @michalpitowsky

    As I writer, I can tell you, most people don't realize main characters get tortured by their writers. It's usually not fun being a main character. There's a saying amongst writers, that if it was up to the main character, a story would end on page one, because most people avoid conflict and change. Writers have to build all sorts of plots to force characters into difficult situations that usually people avoid.

    I don't really care for this trend. It's probably because I'm Latino and my Latino culture came first that it's easier to notice how self-centered Americans are. American culture is very "look out for number 1 and be the best and be successful, you are the main character." Hence why I feel Americans don't have a sense of community as opposed to other cultures. It's never about the collective it's about you. So to me this main character syndrome comes off as "I didn't get the attention I think I deserved so now I want everyone's eyes on me," it's just Americans being typical Americans.

    I think for a lot of people it's also about the niggling existential dread of knowing that one day you'll pass away and technically none of the things you loved or stressed over "mattered". Films/books seem immortal and even every menial action that happens in them has its own special significance but in life things just happen for no real reason and then we all move on, sometimes never having another soul even know about what we experienced. I also think the "good damage" thing Diane says in Bojack Horseman summarises why a lot of us feel such a need to be a main character/be seen;
    "If I don't write my book of essays now, that means all the damage I got, isn't good damage. It's just damage. I have gotten nothing out of it, and all of those years, I was miserable for nothing. This video is very interesting. Please make a video about this trope where the child/teen main character of the movie/show is a the savior that has been predicted in the past.

    lmao i was looking up a word i knew to describe all this, realized it was sonder, and then they added it into the end of the video 😂
    it's hard to process how everyone's living wildly different lives as you run errands or sit and eat in a restaurant, but every once in a while i look around and wonder what everyone else is doing and it's quite fun to make up storylines for other people. ooh and also the random convos you have with people are like mini crossovers, and that's pretty cute 🙂

    If you really "acted like the main character", you wouldn't be so focused on going around telling you feel great when you feel like you're the centre of the universe.

    Thank you for this video! I watched many videos from your channel recently, they're so interesting! I liked the videos about female gaze and male gaze. And I wanted to know your opinion about K-Dramas (Romance, the ones based on female written Webtoons) and BL (BoysLove, or Yaoi [Manga])! I think that BLs from Thailand and South Korea are getting more and more popular.

    I'd say people need to have LESS main character syndrome. We're all in first person mode so we naturally are narcissistic and believe our experiences to be unique. If anything people need to be told way more often that the human experience is universal and that they are not that special until they prove themselves to be special. "Empowerment" quickly becomes Mania if not controlled properly and most people are bad at controlling themselves.

    I wish they focused a bit more on race and how that factors into alienating certain people from fulfilling the role of “The Main Character” …also, I’ve never been this early

    I think it's good you look at this subject from different angles, but thinking you're the main character will I think only lead to disappointment. Importance is a human concept and with that we're all equally unimportant/important. There's no better than, there's only suffering in thinking that there is.

    what if... we are all being fed reality from a tube in the back of our head, like in the matrix but instead of everybody sharing the same virtual world, we each have our own and everything in it is designed to make us believe we are in the real world?

    Main Charater Syndrome is a bad thing ask any one who has played D&D with someone with Main Charater Syndome. Life is an ensamble cast
